@Shrimp4074 DWM does with a couple of tweaks, manual install drivers (vmware tools fail to install, but the drivers are official from vmware), and it works.
You know, they should have at least kept this look for the final version of Windows Vista and 7. I was really a big fan of the original Aero theme in theese builds of Longhorn; sad that Microsoft changed it to something that looks terrible. I don't know - maybe it's the more simplified glass borders without that annoying panning reflection that makes this version of Aero more usable.
Oh well - there's still Windows 8, and there's custom Windows themes...
This is NOT a separate OS from Vista. This IS, or was, Windows Vista during development. Development was reset because, according to Microsoft, they didn't have a clear focus.
Though it was reset, most things from before the reset ended up in Windows Vista.
@ThePcTrickster IT seems like it would use a ridiculous amount of RAM, and a very high expensive CPU, not to mention the graphics card... I think that they should just keep remodeling it until the average computer is cough up to it.
Remodeling as in, Errors, lower CPU usage, lower RAM usage, and better virus protection with out using an AV.
Witch is why they stopped it, and went with VIsta.
Dunno what was going in their mind , longhorn looks best win to me but the prob is i cant find its download link. In torrents too , there are no seeds and all.
it was very buggy. the fact that it is better than vista shows they're mistake on scrapping it. I think they should have continued to refine it. this would have definitely been better than vista and microsoft would probably still have the trust they enjoyed years ago.
Stability wise, it was a disaster. No amount of refining could really fix the mess Longhorn was. So they did the rational thing and started over. Now, Vista was by no means perfect, but neither was Longhorn. And in the end, Vista SP2 is decent. Windows 7 it currently at RTM stage and that's turned out very well so Microsoft may very much earn back some of that trust lost at Vista's launch.
I agree man. Im using build 7100 of windows 7 right now and i must say, Its great. I really look at windows 7 as more of a nearly perfected vista though. Its basically how vista should have been at launch. by the way, did you see the fan-made copenhagen concept of windows?
Well, when asked most people said they wanted a perfected Vista, so that's what became of 7. And concepts like that have been flying around since 2002, my thing has always been that it's really simple to make them look really slick on video but the challenge lies in making it equally as nice when you're using it. My personal assumption is that Microsoft has tried making interfaces like what was originally planned for Longhorn and didn't see it as being all that practical in the end.
@Shrimp4074 Hahaha, no. Their only trust is being given by me through Windows XP, but since they're dropping that, I'm dropping my trust for M$. The Aero still sucks and Vista is still unstable (SP2 and my wired mouse stopped working. I switched to Ubuntu which has Compiz, a DWM alternate for Linux.)
Can someone give me a link for download original ISO of build 4074 or even better, if some good person could upload it for my I would be really thankful.
the first concept preview/build of longhorn/vista was ugly as shit man it was all blue and the sidebar was weird and stuck out i like this build here alot it is amazing how much it changed and then for some reason they dropped the concept and started vista and honestly longhorn ui is much better
This is very different from Windows 7. The only similarities I see is the thick glass taskbar. Everything else is different. This has a more stylish sidebar, 7 has label-free tasks and the desktop/peek button. There are a lot of differences.
I wish Vista/7 had kept the Explorer file browser from 7. It looks so much better.
umm on ur last sentence 7 wasnt out b4 vista and it still isnt and longhorn is vista just in beta u prob know that its just that u typed it confusing haha

Nonono, they did what you said, however when they started again, they still nammed it longhorn... You can see this on wikipedia also.
And Vista isnt made from scratch, only windows 8 will be made from scratch. Vista is based of the windows server 2003 core i believe (which is the fastest os microsoft ever made.)
No, i did mean Windows 8. I remember reading on a technology blog that they said they will make Windows 7 an expansion to windows 6 (vista), kind of like how they went windows 95 to 98. Windows 8, they plan on rewriting the kernel or core or something. Its what i read, not from Microsoft's mouth, apparently someone from Microsoft said it at a conference or expo or something.
Microsoft released thingo for vista which replaces the core with something like Winmin, or adds windows 7 features, one of them..but Vista was ment to be a minor release between Windows 5 and windows 7.
It was what was going to originally be Windows Vista. They had to reset it after build 4094 though, they started the new what I like to call "rushed" Vista in early 2005 based on Windows Server 2003.

"I wouldn't recommend going to joejoe, it's full of idiots/n00bs/whatever you want to call them that have absolutely no knowledge about Longhorn at al" LOL I agree with you there! :D
I found a torrent. When I finish downloading it, I might post a link on Mega Upload. But I have to keep it on the hush-hush or M$ will find out and ask whoever I host it to to take it down. But then, I can always post a download on The Pirate Bay and be safe that way. Their servers are in sweeden so M$ can't harm them or me. And they've gotten tons of hate mail from microsoft saying "if you don't take blah blah blah down, we're gonna tell on you!"
Well, it's a fair call if you think Longhorn runs better than Vista on your computer... everyone has different experiences. But even if Longhorn does have good stability, not all programs work with it, and not to mention the lack of updates which causes a serious concern for security. RAM and GFX cards often are causes for poor performance in Vista, can you recall what performance indicator Vista gave your pc?
4.1, in this video though I had a different graphics card which gave me a 3.x, however I currently have vista installed with my new 8600 GT that I got a few month ago, I still see Longhorn as faster, though my ram is 400MHz DDR which I admit is slow.
I believe Vista to be a lot more stable than Longhorn. Longhorn 4074 was an Alpha product and was nowhere near complete. In the Longhorn builds the sidebar was built into explorer (hence the taskbar being shifted out of the way). This makes Longhorn so much more unstable than Vista where the sidebar is a separate app to explorer; for instance if a tile in the Longhorn sidebar were to crash,it would cause the whole explorer to crash and not respond.unstable!
Vista isn't complete in my opinion, it's still incredibly unstable and has horrible performance. But meh, on my system specs Longhorn almost never crashes (then again vista never crashed either, however vista was just too slow for me and I noticed a performance drop from XP)
Not only that, there's no way you can make the toolbars transparent and go with the theme in XP, not to mention all the other elements. This is Longhorn not XP, I told people to actually try googling "Windows Longhorn build 4074".
Actually Vista is based off Windows Server 2003 which is A LOT more stable than XP, however Microsoft stuffed a bunch of crap in Vista so Vista is now unstable. In my experience this old abandoned longhorn build is more stable than Vista.
No it's before Vista, it was never released however. It was actually going to be Vista originally but they were having issues and had to restart the whole project, I find Longhorn valuable however because there are features in it that aren't in Vista.
There are quite a few ways to do it, one of the more popular is editing a key in the registry and then running a command in "run". It's somewhere on the web.
Wow... err... you people are going to wait for a piece of vaporware (Windows 7) that 'maybe' will be released in 2010 ? OMG ! When will any of you ever learn ? Your Linux is ready.
i have a link to a download site... click on my name to go to my channle, and click on my website, from there, click on "admin bulliton board" then click on "windows longhorn downloads" and from there you can go to the download site...
You can get this off torrents. However, the hack to enable DWM will be hard to get
LH was slated to be the project after XP. They added way to many expecations to it, it grew too big to handle, it was unstable and crap. Jim Allchin and Bill ordered a "reset" in 2004. That "reset" kept the Longhorn name, but it was built fresh from server 03. Now, Server 08 kept the LH codename. Server 08 and vista share the same code base. get it? Good.
Vienna WAS the code name to the next version of Windows.
Fiji is not real.
Look for Windows 7. Next version of Windows, both Server and Client... Microsoft's PR Firm said to expect the next version of windows with three years of dev time.
nice man how did you get this version i love the prebuilds of windows longhorn i was searching for but i dont find it well in this days exist the vista but i want to see the really diference between MS Windows Longhorn(Prebuilds)and MS Windows Vista(Betas) well i think i'll continue searching i love this prebuild i havnt seen before in video only in pics thnx for the upload
I actually got this a few years back, i've been messing around with it lately, it's a nice OS (not really the most stable but it's pretty usable), the only problem most people seem to have with it is getting drivers, fortunatley for me every driver I use works with it lol
Yep i agree its just a prebuild well in that years i cannot get it because i have no internet i just got the Vista beta 2 build in august but i want to give a try to the winfs included in that builds and other things relationed its not pretty stable but i think it was nice

But then, I can always post a download on The Pirate Bay and be safe that way. Their servers are in sweeden so M$ can't harm them or me. And they've gotten tons of hate mail from microsoft saying "if you don't take blah blah blah down, we're gonna tell on you!"

limewire
cutlessli 4 years ago
its not limewire!!!! It is from the Joe Joe group website. Limewire is very unreliable and has fake stuff or viruses
oshouazu200 4 years ago
It's not from JoeJoe. It's from Microsoft back in 2004. JoeJoe has nothing to do with longhorn other than making it seem like crap, which it isn't.

Collusion69 4 years ago
4.1, in this video though I had a different graphics card which gave me a 3.x, however I currently have vista installed with my new 8600 GT that I got a few month ago, I still see Longhorn as faster, though my ram is 400MHz DDR which I admit is slow.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
I believe Vista to be a lot more stable than Longhorn. Longhorn 4074 was an Alpha product and was nowhere near complete. In the Longhorn builds the sidebar was built into explorer (hence the taskbar being shifted out of the way). This makes Longhorn so much more unstable than Vista where the sidebar is a separate app to explorer; for instance if a tile in the Longhorn sidebar were to crash,it would cause the whole explorer to crash and not respond.unstable!
Collusion69 4 years ago
Vista isn't complete in my opinion, it's still incredibly unstable and has horrible performance. But meh, on my system specs Longhorn almost never crashes (then again vista never crashed either, however vista was just too slow for me and I noticed a performance drop from XP)

men can u post download link please (y)

You're better off getting a free application that enables glass - sometimes they offer some other visual nicities as well as basic glass.
Collusion69 4 years ago
There's *MUCH* more to longhorn other than aero (glass), most of the features are hidden, or disabled in the registry.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
Yes, On my PC i've never had an issue with Longhorn, I think Microsoft could have tried a bit harder to fix it. Meh.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
wow that's alot of info about longhorn ok thnx
kneltlight 4 years ago
This isn't xp with windowblinds because the sidebar overlaps the taskbar along the bottom.
Collusion69 4 years ago
Not only that, there's no way you can make the toolbars transparent and go with the theme in XP, not to mention all the other elements. This is Longhorn not XP, I told people to actually try googling "Windows Longhorn build 4074".
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
LH looks alot better to me...and it probably has better performance I would expect, being based off XP (correct me if im wrong)
SgtSavage166 4 years ago
Actually Vista is based off Windows Server 2003 which is A LOT more stable than XP, however Microsoft stuffed a bunch of crap in Vista so Vista is now unstable. In my experience this old abandoned longhorn build is more stable than Vista.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
is this after vista??
kneltlight 4 years ago
this is the baby vista, in its first little computer steps.....Longhorn is Windows Vista's codename before it was released.
SgtSavage166 4 years ago
No it's before Vista, it was never released however. It was actually going to be Vista originally but they were having issues and had to restart the whole project, I find Longhorn valuable however because there are features in it that aren't in Vista.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
hey I have a cuestion. I intalled longhorn 4074 in my pc but I don't have the DWM enabled. why?
What I need to activate it? thanks
CharlyMachine 4 years ago
There are quite a few ways to do it, one of the more popular is editing a key in the registry and then running a command in "run". It's somewhere on the web.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
Apparently this was just XP with WindowBlinds.
paul6888 4 years ago
Google "Longhorn 4074".
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
Wow... err... you people are going to wait for a piece of vaporware (Windows 7) that 'maybe' will be released in 2010 ? OMG ! When will any of you ever learn ? Your Linux is ready.

Meh, I personally don't hate any OS. I Triple Boot XP, Ubuntu and OSx86, I hardly ever use XP anymore though :P

i have a link to a download site... click on my name to go to my channle, and click on my website, from there, click on "admin bulliton board" then click on "windows longhorn downloads" and from there you can go to the download site...
stargater94 4 years ago
to be honest I don't think you should be publically advertising that, hosting longhorn isn't exactly legal, but meh.
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
You can get this off torrents. However, the hack to enable DWM will be hard to get
LH was slated to be the project after XP. They added way to many expecations to it, it grew too big to handle, it was unstable and crap. Jim Allchin and Bill ordered a "reset" in 2004. That "reset" kept the Longhorn name, but it was built fresh from server 03. Now, Server 08 kept the LH codename. Server 08 and vista share the same code base. get it? Good.
Cullend11 4 years ago
thought I would update that...
Vienna WAS the code name to the next version of Windows.
Fiji is not real.
Look for Windows 7. Next version of Windows, both Server and Client... Microsoft's PR Firm said to expect the next version of windows with three years of dev time.

It seems so lag....

I guess they really had the final concept down from the beginning.
v2ExPLoSiVo 4 years ago
whare can i get that?
asukafan8 4 years ago
ahh longhorn previews were so much better than the final vista product.....
what did you have to do to enable DWM effects? I have 4074 and a great video card (it's compatible with Vista's Aero).
funny, though, that there isn't a build number assigned to the lower right corner of the desktop in this video...
emulator12 4 years ago
there are tweaks to enable DWM and remove build numbers
snuhr 4 years ago
Longhorn has never been vista, Longhorn has always been the next generation server platform.
They just used a lot of the same technologies in Vista.
MissKary 4 years ago
Nope, Vista was shat out of the carcas of the original Longhorn project. They later used the name as a working title for Windows Server '08.
And to think, people say that creativity is dead in marketing...

mastermj99 4 years ago
I actually got this a few years back, i've been messing around with it lately, it's a nice OS (not really the most stable but it's pretty usable), the only problem most people seem to have with it is getting drivers, fortunatley for me every driver I use works with it lol
Shrimp4074 4 years ago
Yep i agree its just a prebuild well in that years i cannot get it because i have no internet i just got the Vista beta 2 build in august but i want to give a try to the winfs included in that builds and other things relationed its not pretty stable but i think it was nice
