  • ugly voice ! worst mezzo soprano

  • Norman is great, Horne is excellent but Verrett in her youth was THE BEST!

  • Excelente Marilyn!!! Parece que a Zinka no le gustó jajajaja

  • Sorry, I just listened to Jessye Norman's rendition; nothing comes close.

  • meraviglioso mezzosoprano..

  • Most beautiful presentation. Please also listen to Jessye Norman's rendition for a phenomenal interpretation with all the heart-felt passion and fire befitting the aria. It is also on YouTube.

  • A consummate artiste! Bravissima!

  • Pizdets....

  • What a wonderful sight! Marilyn Horne reaching out to another great in her time...Rise Stevens.GREAT! "Jackie" has come a LONG way since this wonderful rendition, as any can hear tuning into Dame Sutherland's goodbye. Marilyn's voice is one in a billion, I guess, and 30 years later while battling pancreatic cancer is doing marvelous work through her foundation, Master

Classes, and traveling around spreading her knowledge to eager students! A most fine human being, as well as THE BEST!

  • malgre ses qualites de legato : je n'aime pas du tout cette voix trop masculine.Sa Carmen a de quoi effrayer tous les don Jose.Mais elle a les moyens...Elle impressionne et cela plait.

  • voce e interpretazione fuori luogo.

  • Marilyn is a mezzo and the role of Dalila is for a mezzo. She was known for a large range and many vocal colors. I can see how one could say she had a masculine tone at times, but Dalila, although womanly, was a strong character and had that dominance in her being through and through. Marilyn's interpretation is unique, for sure and not for everyone.

  • Great singing, great voice, love her interpretation. Brava

  • mm9913

  • From Wikipedia: '[Marilyn Horne] made an appearance on "The Odd Couple" as a character named "Jackie," her own nickname, a meek and nervous would-be singer who develops into a full-blown diva and essays the role of Carmen with brilliant results. FYI.

  • @chucknyc123

    thanks

  • thank you!!!!! x 1,000,000 thank you Marilyn

  • Great artiste.

Malheuresement Mr Levine n'y pige rien, Il perd toute la magique de l'orchestration de Saint-Saëns . Vraiment horrible. Il faut écouter le grand Georges Prêtre.... maestro de rêve dans ce répertoire.

  • Funny that Zinka was miffed at being upstaged donkeys years after she retired. Ah well, once a prima donna, always a prima donna.

  • @mm9913

she doesn t understand the words she sings.. listen to Callas singing Dalila you will understand immediatly what i am talking about, only if you do speak french

  • @henrifrombarcelona

I also love Shirley Verrett when she sings this, and many. many other things.

  • @henrifrombarcelona I do speak French, however i disagreed with your calling her voice masculine. Her french is adequate but as a dramatic soprano she is interpreting song and not speaking prose, anyway, I greatly enjoy hearing this, often and repeatedly.

  • @mm9913 wasn't a mezzo? cause Dalila is a mezzo rol isn`t?

  • I love watching the lady in purple over her shoulder. Seems like she is enjoying every part of the evening!! The way it should be.

  • Zinka was hating.

  • That legato is orgasmic!

  • this is exquisite

  • She's an angel! Cuts through your soul!

  • How wonderful is this? The more I see of this 1983 met gala (thankyou YouTube!) the more I think it must have been an extraordinarily special night. So many great performances, and such a terrific atmosphere and audience reaction.

Who is the lady Marilyn embraces at the end of the aria, and why?

  • @rossmcl177 The woman is Rise Stevens. I guess she embraced her because this is a role Rise is associated with.

  • @NKWIAM Thankyou. that makes sense. Mind you, If I had been there would have embraced Marilyn myself for his performance. :)

  • trying her best but not into the frenche words, too masculine for this role

  • @henrifrombarcelona Do you mean too dramatic? or that she sang the composed notes too well, that is what the composer wrote and as a dramatic mezzo her depth is unparralleled. Not masculine, simply on point!

  • Engolada Horne.....siempre engolada....

  • This is a wonderful performance. However, having just watched A Room with a View, I have to say that this dress would have been more appropriate for the 1893, and not 1983, MET Gala. :)

  • @Gav640 Hilarious!!

  • Comment removed

  • I have noticed that in the background, there are some wonderful singers such as Ramón Vinay, Zinka Milanov and Licia Albanese, but I´d like to know who are the others. Can anybody tell? Tks.

  • The Lady She hugs at the end is Rise Stevens, The small lady to Rise's left is Bidu Sayao, the lady in the black to Rise's right is Rose Bampton. Someone told me that the lady in the purplish dress in the back row behind Marilyn is Martha Lipton but I'm not sure.

  • Yes, you are absolutey right. I have found out there is also Ferrucio Tagliavini ,and those you mentioned!!!

    Many thanks!

  • Beautiful voice--this aria was taken a little too slow for my taste, but it certainly gave Horne room to unspool a lot of fabulous sound.

  • Many a mezzo, or any other singer, would kill for color like that in their voice!! Stupendous.

  • @corellipavarotti

actually I don't find her timbre very feminine....

  • What a pleasure to hear the great Jackie Horne in such good voice. She has to be the most beloved American mezzo of our time. I did several Aida's with her as Amneris as well as the American premiere of Vivaldi's Orlando Furioso in Dallas. She was hilarious, ribald, but always totally professional. And her legacy will live on forever.

  • @chucknyc123

I have never heard of anyone calling her Jackie till today...

  • My question is, how and who selected what to sing?? I remember watching this...it was an all day, two day event!

  • Marilyn allways gives 100% God bless Her a thousand times Bravo!!!!!!

  • Marilyn... Marilyn...JE T'AAAAAIME

  • @Gruberovito hahahaha...me tooo!!

  • Mrs Horn was always outstanding.

I feel sorry for Zinka Milanov who seems

not to enjoy the evening and the succes

    of all other singers.

    Just to bad- !

  • oh...I love this artist and song..

  • My insides turn to jelly every time I hear her sing this...and it makes me cry

  • Que hermoso gesto de cariño y admiracion de la Mrs Horne a su maestra, "la gran Dalila", la mejor de la historia.

  • What is wrong with you people? You are barely civilized.

  • Great Horne.the final embrace with the older mezzo was moving...

Only Zinka Milanoc(arrogant and ignorant as she always was)seemed indifirent to this great singer.

  • The older mezzo is Risa Stevens . She is still alive and is 96 years old this year. What was the deal with Zinca? She looks like she is sitting on a corn cob. Is it because she is still carrying a grudge against the Met?

  • Thanks for the information,it is quite moving the way the embrace each other.

Milanov is(and always was)very jealous of any singer that would upstage her...poor thing.

  • Stunning! Better flow than her other recording(s)

Probably due to a better conductor. Brava! TY.

  • Fantastic voice!! Great.

  • I got the answer from DanRobSo who informed me that the mystery woman is Martha Lipton, a Mezzo Soprano from the 50's and 60's. Unfortunately I couldn't find too much about her on You Tube

  • Bidu Sayao was my teachers ant Bidu. I heard wonderful storys about her. Her record was first one I ever bought for my self.

    Madame Horne is wonderful.

  • Marilyn Horne !1 she is my Dalia!! the best of all !!

  • BREATHTAKING!

  • Does anyone notice that the woman in the purplish/dusty rose dress behind Marilyn's left shoulder is mouthing part of the words? Does anyone know who she is? She must have sung this at one time.

  • She does seem to be mouthing some of the words. But she never sang this role. Her name is Bidu Sayao, a very popular Brazilian Soprano during the 40's and

    50's.

  • I meant the woman in the top row.. Bidu is the small woman in the reddish dress sitting in the front row next to Rise Stevens

  • This is the legendary Zinka Milanov!!!

  • Not Zinka either. This woman is sitting in the top row behind Rose Bampton. Zinka in on the opposite side on the end of the bottom row.

  • I think she is one of those rich people who pay a lot of money..to Met. And this is a payback from Met and let them sit there o stage. why?..I wouldn´t like to that..but I´m not rich..of course..Amazing singer Horne.

  • It must be a great artist to sing so slow..and she is. (was)..great voice..

  • It seems, Zinka Milanov was a ittle bit suspicious... :-)

  • A very nice touch at the end for Marilyn to acknowledge Rise Stevens, possibly the greatest Dalila in Met history.

  • Class act all the way, both of them.

  • sorry to put water into the wine.... but she knödels.... it is good, ok.

  • Extremely beautiful but much too slow.

  • For me, one of Horne's best performances. Thanks for the post :)

  • Miss Horne sings soo beautifully!
