  • How tall are you ulillillia?

  • Rock on, ulillillia, rock on.

  • I still otherwise know what to do when I end up in water deeper than I am tall - just float. It's the only thing I can do that doesn't use much energy (I have very low stamina so I exhaust easy).

  • does anybody notice that thats ether wisconsin or duluth? not anywhere near minneapolis?

  • It's very close to Duluth actually. The main trip was to the Minneapolis area and is where I spent nearly all of my time.

  • i don't know if you still want to wade in the mississippi river or not, but after having lived near the river for two years i would strongly suggest you not do so. the water is pretty gross, man.

  • Ulilililia (sorry I'm not sure if I spelled it right and my eyesight isn't good enough to differentiate between the "i"'s and the "l"'s, you are great don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise!

  • Ulillillia, stay brave, stay true. We need more people like you.

  • Hi Ulillillia.... I read your dream journal.

Is that weird? I hope you don't think I'm weird.

    I think you're absolutely amazing.

  • Overcoming your fear?

  • Overcoming my fear? What, did you time warp back to July of 1997? The water one was done way back in July of 1997, roughly 423 million seconds (13 1/2 years) ago. I still do have a fear with water... but only very deep water where I can't touch bottom (this is a more natural kind of thing), considering I otherwise can't swim (if 0.2 mph is anything).

  • @ulillillia why dont you learn how to swim on a pool? its easy.

  • If this is your first vacation in 8 years you really need to make it a priority to take more time off.

  • You are so interesting and awesome! You remind me of my brother :P

  • Looks like you shot this on 8mm.

  • How old were you here?

  • About 24 2/3 years.

  • Its good to see you've gotten over your fear of water. Perhaps someday you will have similar success with your mirror-terror problem.

  • I love this video so much.

    It's relaxing to watch.

Also, the hues of it give me an incidental impression of nostalgia.

  • Why does the footage look to be about 30 years old?

  • It's a glitch with the camera. While stills are fine (you can see this on my site), videos where bright areas are often have this pinkish effect added when it normally shouldn't be there.

  • Ah. It just makes it look really cool!

  • I don't like it. Correcting it is too advanced for me to do, decompression and recompression aside.

  • Yeah. That sounds like waaay to much work for me. I'm lucky I get the videos off my phone and onto youtube without incident XD.

  • It looks cold, was it?

  • can you teach me to be a scientist

  • I almost feel like I'm going to get a call telling me I only have 7 more days to live.

  • I noticed a few months back you mentioned the date 2012. I've seen some articles that say the earth will be directly between the Sun and the center of the Galaxy on the winter solstice of 2012, and that the Sun will also be at it's peak of sun spot activity. There is fear of the magnetic poles switching. Do you think there is any chance of survival past the winter solstice of 2012?

  • There should be a chance for survival. That date, bye the way, is Dec 21, 2012. I haven't seen the hour yet, or even whether or not it'll occur during the day or night (using GMT as the basis). Numerous cultures (not just the Mayans) point to this date.

  • You are an exceptionally fascinating fellow. (notice I avoid one of the bad words you don't like.) Thanks for answering the questions on SomethingAwful Ask/Tell, I've found your videos through it and am pretty interested in your book.

  • Doesn't that count as blue water?

  • Water is actually about A0A0A0 in color with a very low opacity. In the past, before 1997, it would have been considered as "blue water", even though the water actually looked brown.

  • So does this mean that you have now re-categorized this as 'white water'?

  • No. It looks more brown than anything else. Water only appears blue due to 3 major reasons: substances in the water, the sides of pools being painted blue, and the reflection of the sky.

  • I want to see more videos of you in the environment, uli!

  • What do you mean "in the environment"? You're always in an environment of some sort. Even if I'm in one of those voids between galaxy clusters, that's still an environment.

  • I mean more videos of you on vacation, or more videos of you in general. A video blog would be interesting.

  • Vacations are extremely rare. After all, 8.1 years without one does say something. Normally, it's around one every 2.4 years. I do have a video blog as well, involving my game design stuff, how I process my music, videos, and site updates, and the related.

  • You are the most interesting person on the planet.

  • Nice videos, looks like a fun vacation.

  • Wait...that was you in the video, right?

  • What is your height in centimeters or feet?

  • I don't know, but probably 5 2/3 feet (5' 8", 68 inches; 172.72 centimeters). It's only a guess.

  • Wow, you looked about 5'4-5'7 in this video. No offense though.

  • he is god

  • Hey, I know this is a bit late, but I was glad to hear you had a vacation.

I don't blame you for not swimming though, the water looks freezing!

  • In addition, I found something interesting with the camera. If I zoom in 2 notches, I don't get that pinkish effect that I'd otherwise get with normal field of view. Besides, how can you tell if the water is freezing cold or not by just looking at it, given that there aren't any ice burgs lying around.

  • Oh, I didn't mean literally freezing, I just meant it looks very cold. Too cold to swim in comfortably anyway.

  • one can typically judge the temperature of water from the surrounding climate and estimated depth.

Deeper water tends to be colder as it has a much larger volume than it does surface area and hence does not absorb heat easily.

  • Nice video. You look happy.

  • What is going to happen when no one is around to support you? How will you survive?

  • Next time you go to Minneapolis you should purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

  • i'm glad you got over your fear of water dude, take it easy

  • ... that was clear back in 1997, 11 1/2 years ago.

  • maybe in summer 2019 you'll get over your completely misplaced fear of mirrors

  • its LAKE INFERIOR

  • Having geography problems? Look on pretty much any map and you'll see that it is marked as "Lake Superior".

  • He was making a joke :)

  • I can't tell if it is a joke or not.

  • Well, he knew that the lake was named "Lake Superior", but he called it "Lake Inferior" due to the fact that the word "Inferior" is the antinome of the word "Superior".

Most people wouldn't make such a large mistake with names, but this is Youtube, and most users aren't all that bright, so I understand how you didn't see it :)

  • I take things directly as is many of the times so I can't tell if something is a joke or not. If a minor insult is intended to be a joke, it'll feel like a real insult to me (and thus the comment will be removed as soon as I see it).

  • That's an interesting point of view.

I've taken too many Sociology classes to be able to see the world like that, however.

  • It's an autist's point of view. No amount of sociology classes can prevent it.

  • Ulillillia doesn't have humor subroutines programmed for his mindgame yet.

  • Hi ulillillia: I'm glad to see you got a vacation! I grew up in Cloquet, right by Duluth, so it was nice to see your photos and videos. I do have to tell you, though, that you didn't miss much by not swimming in Lake Superior - it's pretty to look at, but even in the middle of summer it's REALLY cold. [(Average temp is 40° F (4°C)] I hope you get to go swimming - somewhere warmer - on your next vacation.

  • I often consider August 7 as the peak. It's the mathematical mid-point between the summer solstice (Jun 22) and the autumn equinox (Sep 23). This is when I consider the water at it's warmest. Sep 17 is almost about that of Jun 28. I may go to South Dakota next year, but I feel as if there's a 30% chance of it. Details are quite vague at the moment.

  • I should know better than to argue math with you - ha ha - but if you think about a body of water as being a sort of battery that stores heat, it will not necessarily be the warmest at the midpoint between the solstice and equinox, but slightly afterwards. If the lake absorbs more heat each day than it loses at night, it may still be getting warmer for a short period after the solstice even as the days start to get shorter. But Lake Superior is always cold - it's very large and never warms up.

  • This actually isn't really math, but, rather, physics.

  • And what is physics but applied math?

  • hey ulillillia congrats on the much needed vacation.

my family used to spend every summer in grand-marais, minnesota. it's a very beautiful state and lake superior is so cold and clear! i hope you enjoyed it as much as i did when i was a kid!

  • I would have to disagree with the "clear" part of it. When I went there, it had visibility measuring in inches, about 8, and appeared brown up close. Cold I would agree with.

  • the water is like a rippling mirror

  • I used to have hair that long, it gets irritating though, it falls out everywhere, too hot in summer. Ever considered something different?

  • I love waves man. They get me all spacey.

I wish I could be a wave, playing tag with my friends, nibbling on your knees.

What an amazing life that would be.

  • You should've just dove in. Any body of water feels cold at first, you just have to get used to it.

  • Three things: I wasn't dressed for it, I don't like the sudden submersion, and there's a law that forbids it at this time of year (no life guards, no swimming). It's why I couldn't go swimming at all during this vacation. I never knew of the existence of this law and, as far as I know, North Dakota doesn't have it.

  • Nice video, did you even slightly consider swimming even though it was cold?

And since you got the sound working on the camera, you should start up a weekly blog where you just sit and talk about everything to the camera. Any thoughts on that?

  • Only slightly, very slightly. There's a pesky law that ND doesn't have where you must have a life guard in order to swim. A video blog is highly unlikely for two primary reasons. The first is batteries. That camera hogs up batteries extremely quickly putting a 20-minute cap on videos. In addition, I don't have any motive for that kind of thing.

  • I hope you get to go to an ocean or the gulf of mexico sometime- the water down on the gulf shores in late summer is perfect, especially on a windy day.

  • The ocean is just way too far. It'd take 3 days just to get there in my most familiar forms of transportation (car and train). 3 consecutive 500+ mile-drives is what it's going to take to get to any ocean. Airplanes are completely unfamiliar, though I'm not afraid of heights, it's just very expensive and I have no experience. Outside TV, I have no idea what airports are like. Buses are just as slow as cars and trains. Hurricanes are the only bother for the Gulf of Mexico area.

  • Dude he's just saying sometime in your life. Not sometime soon, just sometime down the road. You will probably ride an airplane before you die

  • Not just an airplane, but a space ship almost, but how the supposed doomsday of Dec 21, 2012 comes, that I don't know. Despite not having been in an airplane, I can simulate the effects and feel quite well making use of the arctangent function and other math-related things.

  • you believe in the end of the mayan calendar too? i've never seen any mention of that on your website. in any event, i doubt you could simulate being in an airplane. the feeling of looking down at the world when you are high above it is really cool and i think you'd enjoy it.

  • It's not just a Mayan thing - many cultures (5 or so) all point to this date. I haven't seen the hour, minute, or second yet. I could simulate what it's like to be going 580 mph 35,000 feet up. It's just a matter of using the arctangent function. If you haven't seen my animated GIFs such as "Mountain Fun" or "All About the Spinning Board", you should - they give a good idea on what it's really like to go 700 mph (and faster). Although only 2D, it still gives a good idea on the speed.

  • Nice video. I actually flew often in the past as a child, but a cousin of mine was killed in an airplane crash a few years ago and it turned me off to flying. I know they say such accidents are rare, but it's a horrible thing to experience as a family member.

  • Nice video man, those waves are pretty cool.

  • Brr! I like to wade around like that in the Puget Sound(western washington), at Richmond Beach. I stay in until my feet sting, then get onto the warm sand. Brr!

  • The ocean is completely foreign to me.

  • Nice hair

  • youlilyya owns

  • :) Me too likes wavy water like this, it both looks comfortable and feels pleasant.

  • You might like Lake Windias in my 2D game - it's waves are a quite a bit bigger than this. This is probably about 8 inches or so. Although undecided, Lake Windias may be as much as 3 feet for wave heights. Stugu Lake is closer to this, at around a foot. Quredda Lake is the closest at about 6 inches with Mebna Lake around 4 inches. 4 inches is 6 pixels where the character is at.

  • The pinkish coour of this video makes it look like a really old home video, it makes you look like a cool dude ulillillia.

  • It's a problem with the camera's software for video recording as, point the camera in the same area in photo mode, and this problem does not occur.

  • I really like the effect that it makes

  • My website update is about done, from which you can see the photos in true color, and with far greater clarity than these videos, even with high quality mode. I use 640x480 and 30 fps for the recording, the maximum possible. If the problem isn't visible at 640x480 with 15 fps or 320x240 with 15 or 30 fps, then you can definitely say that it's a bug. Inconsistencies are bugs.

  • Ulililia, we are all very proud of you for getting over your phobia of blue water!

  • That was way back in 1997, more than 11 years ago. The water here looked more brown. Of all forms of exercise, swimming tops my list, leaving others in the dust. Running is my next favorite, but I only use it at select times (and in short bursts) rather than merely for random exercise (like on a treadmill - these are fun in my mind game - 200+ mph and it melts! Charge up the speed blast and....).

  • minnesota looks cold and tepid

  • It may seem like it, but it's not. Back in 2000, I recall a day where it got to 85°F outside. It's nearly the same as North Dakota, except that MN has more moisture. ND is semi-arid (half desert) and there are some cacti (small, but there). 17 inches of rain per year is about all I get in my area, 8-10 starts desert.

  • The color in the video reminds me of the album art of "Out of Exile"

  • It's a flaw with the brightness adjustments in the camera. It's very often this pinkish color. There's isn't an option to stop it. Photos don't have this, but videos do, hinting to a bug with the camera's software.
