So silly. Starting a car with the window wipers off, how will you see? Also the cars going to run out of oil because you have it on a lean and it will drip out of the inlet manifold. Man u guys are silly, I know everything about cars and I comment on heaps of posts, because I am cool.
Nostalgic overload, man. Almost as much as last week when I tested my mettle at a friendly game of blurry grandma. The results of the challenge proved inconclusive. "SMOKE LIKE A SIEVE." If all my fingers were fully opposable, I'd give that statement 11 thumbs up.
We were mostly proud that it *started*, because considering our ignorance, it probably shouldn't have. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have egged him on about revving it, but who's to say it would make a difference; this engine ran strong as a daily driver for over a year, then he sold the car for something cheaper.
Shurahaidate, walrusowner's talking about the lifters that are tapping, not changing over to 99 lifters. You can hear that they didnt do anything to the lifters and they are tapping. Also, on your first start up, the engine hasnt spread the oil all over itself, so it isn't a good idea to start reving right off. let it run for a while, then rev.
The lifters should have been replaced, but weren't due to time/money constraints. He needed his car back together ASAP, so there were probably many things that should have been done, but weren't.
This is definitely NOT a guide to proper startup & break-in, just a video of a couple of guys having finally made a bunch of parts on the garage floor into a running car again. :)
Diffenently shoulda taken care of those lifters while you had it out of the car. Also, if this was the actualy first start, it was pretty dumb to be revving the motor like that. Nice car though.
civs dont smoke first of all. they strain water from various foods. also i dont think your primed your lifters because they are ticking more than the usual lifter tick these cars have. good video though.
Actualy thats a dabayed subject. Theres a website that says running had durring break in is the way to seat the rings good. I always run my dirt bikes hard after rebuild and i never have a problem. Most people still follow 1960s rules.
Dude...I don't know what to say...except thank you so much for posting this :D That was such a great day, it was our crowning moment. And I just realized that sieves don't smoke lol
I found this video on my camera, which had been at the bottom of a box for about six months. I really miss the turbo import sportscar days...there was always a problem with them, which was followed by an enormous sense of accomplishment whenever we fixed it.
Isn't a sieve like a flat collender, like what prospectors pan for gold with? 0^^
I only helped a little (that's my 300ZX in the background, I don't know much about Mitsubishi.) My friend Ian (the guy in the video) did the rebuild over about 4 months, I think. It took about a day to get the engine and all the piping back in the car.

It's actually not stupid to revv a newly rebuilt engine...
You can go all out on that shit.
I agree though, should have gotten the 99 lifters in there... Unless this was before 99. :p

how about, stupid to run a first start motor on jack stands where the engine cant pickup oil from the pan. lol
DaKnightFall 3 years ago 2
Yeah, that probably should have been taken into consideration too, though at that little bit of an incline I doubt it was an issue.
kenecchi 3 years ago
@DaKnightFall youre dumb. if that was the case, all cars that go up hills would starve for oil and fail constantly on slopes.

That was stupid to rev a rebuild motor. You better hope you didn't fuck up the rings.
jesselyons2002 3 years ago 3
He probably revved to 3.5k rpms tops; not like he was bouncing off the limiter or anything, so no, not being stupid.
Stupid however, would describe the fact that there was NO COOLANT in the system. :D Luckily, he didn't run it for long and it all turned out ok.

Man, I bet he feels hella good for starting it back up!!! Nice 300ZX, too.
ChengyM 3 years ago
Definitely, it's a really hard car to work on and there were a ton of complications in getting it back together. Thanks!

nice on engine rebuild how long did it take you to rebuild it and putting it in the car?
