@vulture1000005 Yeah, that definitely has happened to someone and someone has probably been cut pretty bad as well. As for me, I do not put any fingers in the path of the blade when I do that with a knife, just in case what your imagining were to happen.
In Spain they make and sell bigger models, specially from the XVIII century, up to one meter in length, but of course you can not carry them on the streets. They were the most common weapon for centuries.
I hope you DO rob someone like me or the guy in this video so you can get a bullet in the head and cold steel in the gut for being a low life scum thief.
@MrDawggie California. Though I don't have this knife anymore. A little too big to carry often so I moved it along. I tend to stick with a max blade length of 5" and that's just about right for me.
@SPOOKYSHOGUN Most states don't allow a weapon that has a blade over 3" to be concealed. California in particular has a "dirk/dagger" law which I'm pretty sure that blade falls under. You might want to double check before concealing that.
@Fuzzy3676 I appreciate your advice and 3" is a very safe blade length to carry when considering travel in multiple states, however, I've been in California for decades and am more then conversational in the laws pertaining to knives here. The applicable state laws covering folding knives in California are quite clear and this knife in no way violates the relevant penal codes. The only laws it can be said to violate are municipal codes in certain locales.
Ironically, California has NO blanket limit on length of concealed carry folding knives, so this monster is legal! The restrictions are no locking folders on K-12 campuses, no 4.00"+ folders in government buildings, and the usual no airport, etc. restrictions on most knives. There are some local restrictions, but why live or visit there anyways? :-)
@rollsroyceghost131 I also live in CA so I can answer your question with some focus but of course this carries absolutely no legal weight as I'm not an attorney ;) Technically, you should be fine if you carry this knife per CA state law, as outlined in sections 653k and 12020. The exceptions will be city codes, most of which dictate a 3" blade length limit. Los Angeles is the city that is most often a problem area for knife carriers in this regard.
@SPOOKYSHOGUN Wow..! Thanks for the heads up dude..! Now I know I have to be more precaution cause I know there are people out there that carry bigger knives then mine!!!
i usually wear skinny jeans with a bloused plaid shirt... i can easily carry the XL Espada G-10 and no one would know i have it. The ergonomics of the G-10 versions are amazing beyond belief, and will not slip from your hands like the aluminum framed ones.
a long blade is generally not a factor when considering that, for the average person, they are looking to disarm a person rather than kill them. This can be done effectively with a shot blade by targeting muscle groups namely those in the arms. people tend to loose their will to fight when you stab into their bicep.personally i say go with a mid size folder that has a quick release function such as a spring assist. ive also heard people recommend small fixed blades. Sheathed of course
1. A knife occupies the same level of force as a gun. So, does one shoot to disarm the attacker? No, the goal is to stop the attack from continuing, not "disarm rather then kill".
2. Bio mechanical cutting is great. It can work. The size of the knife isn't relevant though.
3. There is no real evidence a person will lose the will to fight when you stab their bicep. I research reports of knives being used in self defense. I've never found one that validates that claim.
1. You are absolutely right but what happens to a persons arm when you severe major muscles that control the movement of their arm? they DONT have a choice and you have effectively disabled their arm. I said this because, for most people, this would be one of the easier non lethal vulnerable points to effectively attack. Personally i would go for eyes throat stomach (heart has to much stuff that can throw off a strike.) or even kidneys and liver.
2. you are again right but as a Marine i live by the adage High Speed Low Drag. This means i prefer something that is A) quick to deploy and B) has little chance of snagging the pocket when drawn. You were right in the fact that nothing beats being attentive but if some one does happen to get the jump on you (no one can be alert 24/7) then its best to have a simple, quick deploying knife. which is why i prefer something smaller for everyday carry
3. It doesnt matter if they lose the will to fight or not. By severing the major muscle group in the arm you can take away the ABILITY to fight. Most people will guard there face or torso because they consider these areas vulnerable. They do so with their limbs obviously. So this presents you with the opportunity to disable your opponent by striking a vulnerable area that they are not expecting.
personally i am some one who has been trained in the proper use of knives and i have to say that this knife would make a poor self defense weapon when compared to the many other tactical folders made by cold steel. When in a "mugging" situation you want a knife that is quick to deploy and fits naturally into the curve of your hand.
@moshpitmachine 1. I have also studied the "proper" use of knives. There is more then one "proper" way my friend. No system has all of the answers.
2. It's not the size of the knife that matters in the self defense situation, it's you, your mindset, your skillset, and some luck.
3. If you are being mugged and the mugger already has a weapon trained on you, it doesn't matter how quickly your knife deploys. You begin the confrontation 2 beats behind the atttacker. Awareness trumps speed.
1. I understand that there is not set way to defend yourself in a situation. I am well versed in hand to hand combat as well as CQ combat with a weapon. I served in the Marine Corp for 8 years(happy belated birthday Marines) and i have been a Syracuse NY police officer for almost 2 now. Ive studied with various individuals in regards to techniques and styles and i speak from personal experience as well.
2. Another point that i agree with you on your mind is the ultimate weapon everything else is just a tool to make it even deadlier. As we learned in the Marines "One mind any weapon". But as i said before i prefer a high speed low drag personal defense weapon with the quickest possible deployment time. i often carry a 4 inch fixed blade knife for just this reason. I have big knives that look scary dont get me wrong but i dont find them practical for everyday carry
3. Again you are right you are 2 beats behind your attacker. This is why i believe you need a knife that deploys quickly so that gap doesnt widen to 4 beats. I dont know about you but i wanna stop the fuckers heart from beating a 3rd time during that attack and i want him down before my fourth beat. But your right about being aware "always be aware of your surroundings" is another one of those Marine adages that will never leave me. just like "complacency kills" lol
Respond to this video... All in all i will admit you do know about self defense, i never meant to imply that you didnt. I just posted my opinion on the matter, again there is an intimidation factor to take into account as well. So, like most things with self defense, there is no cut and dry answer on this subject it all falls to preference, judgment, and skill.
200+ bucks for AUS8. That's a joke, really. I like some of Cold Steel's folders. Namely the Recon 1, AK-47, and American Lawman. This thing is just rediculous though.
it's not a knife it's a beast.i will get mine in a week in g10 handles.when you take out this knife out of your pocket let me tell you that the attacker will think twice before doing something stupid.can wait to be attacked.
@ragewithfear I actually like the G10 version better overall. It's lighter, thinner, and more secure in the hand due to the grippy G10. I think it should have had a satin finish on the blade though. As it stands, I find the new version less attractive then the original, but it is in my opinion a superior knife from a defensive use perspective.
This is like a gag gift why would someone ever want to carry this knife how would u use that for protection u need something fast and concealable if u were under attack the attacker is not going to wait for u to whip out ur fucking pocket sword
@zacho361 For most people, yeah, I'd call it a "gag gift" because true enough it's huge and wouldn't get carried. Untold thousands of people, men and women alike, carried folders this big and bigger for protection at one time in Spain. As for how this can be used for protection, that's simple. It does conceal, it can be as fast as you want it to be because it really is finely balanced, and an attacker isn't going to wait for a victim to pull out any weapon be it a pocket sword or even a gun.
@zacho361 Also, and most importantly, one has to be aware, smart, and trained before one can use any weapon effectively. Most people are none of those and that my friend is the only reason that criminals successfully mug, maim, and murder so many innocents. It's not the weapon that walks the talk, it's the wielder.
@zacho361 a gag gift that costs over 250 bucks.... Zach you should check out Cold Steels website... If you did pull this knife on someone you could easily take off the hand that was holding the gun they were pointing at you... not saying that's a very likely chance... A few things to know though, it only takes a few seconds for someone to cross 5-10 feet to reach someone who is pulling any kind of weapon and as I usually say "You don't have to reload a knife".... :)
@eneyman Rest assured I will be working on it. There are so many other skilled & qualified knife instructors putting out technique based material already so I would rather dump my energy into the conceptual or as you put it, strategy and philosophy based side of things. My physical knife use skills are a hybrid of WMA & FMA, as well as what I've come up with myself over the years. Teaching that stuff in person is easy to me. I'm not sure I can through the video medium. I may try though.
@eneyman I won't edc it, but I do edc knives with 5" + blades fairly regularly and this one will be in the rotation from now on :) Other then legal reasons, I can't see any reason why not to carry a big folding knife.
@MrFairwarning Yeah, I took the plunge thanks to watching you with yours ;) I had to move my large Espada out in order to get it it but it was worth it.
i love that knife ive been saving up this year and selling some para cord bracelets at my school to get this knife ive wanted that knife since i first saw it about a year ago
@THEREALWENIS I hope you are able to meet your goal of getting it. It's worth it. Just don't pay top dollar for one. Less attractive but way more affordable and 2oz lighter.
