Just listened to "Tattoo" and it occurred to me that these early Van Halen days are long gone and will never return. Especially the first 2 albums. Such a raw energy that will never be matched. I don't care how many unreleased demos that Eddie has that could be used for this album, the reality is, he probably couldn't go back and play any of them. Don't get me wrong I love Van Halen, but I'm disappointed in the new single, and have tempered my expectations for this album.

@vanhalen1975 I actually think "Tattoo" is good. It all comes down to what you walk in expecting, and also whether or not you listen to the song several times to let it sink in. Is it an instant classic rocker like say "Unchained"? No, of course not. But it's still a fun song and considering we're dealing with a band whose members are almost all in their late 50s, that's a good thing. Just don't expect another Fair Warning, and it could be a fun album. :)

@evh5150hawaii It seems too refined and "poppy" i guess. I wish he would pick up a Frankenstein replica and ditch the Wolfgang guitar, which I don't think sounds very good. Some of the other songs on the album have potential. I don't know what I was really expecting, but Tattoo just doesn't sounds good. Too me it just doesn't sound well written. The parts of Tattoo that are on demo tapes from the 70s didn't sound good when I listened to them. I still think the album will be good.

@vanhalen1975 We'll never see Ed ditch the Wolfgang for the Frankenstein replica. And honestly, what would switching the guitar do aside from minor alterations in the tone? It all comes down to the player and their fingers. Ed is not the same guy he was back in 78-84, and as the albums from the 90s show, Ed's style of playing/writing has matured greatly, for better or worse. But yeah, I do think the new album will be great. :)

@vanhalen1975 I ran into a similiar problem with Rush albums. I initially hated everything after Signals, but after listening to enough I've found it to be pretty good (just nothing like 2112 or Permanent Waves of course)

Sammy's a great frontman, and VH had some commercial success during the "Sammy" regime, but it never did a thing for me personally...the music completely lost its 'edge' and 'soul' during that period, and their sound got real sold-out and soft....sorry, buckriley1.
