He is totally right Vietnam will of course give the soldier a lot excitement namely that kind of excitement you are looking for in your daily life in town. Not because you wanna kill but because of the adrenalin rush it gives you to be in dangerous environments all the time. When the soldier are back in the normal environments again he will miss the rush and will try to find something that can replace it. The choice is unfortunately many times narcotic stuff.

when i listen to those kinds of interviews concerning vietnam/middle east in particular, i sometimes wonder myself if a greater part of the us citizens is really that numb or just easily manipulable.

Before I had enlisted and went to Iraq and Afghan, I had a problem decided what job to take. Until I spoke with a Vietnam vet who was a combat engineer. And he told me his stories and experiences. The one that stuck with me the most was he told me they would carry a lucky gook head around with them on patrols.

I went to Washington D.C. to the vietnam memorial on memorial day. A black wall of names in size 12 font that goes on for a few hundred feet. The names of people who died in the war. To the side there were flowers, medals, pictures. It was really sad.

They seem like they cant move on to you in the documentaries because they are telling their story and letting it out, any combat veteran would be the same, but most of the time they seem like they are living normal civilian lives because they are trying to forget it. What is not generally known is immediately before this photo VC Nguyễn Văn Lém (the fellow shot in head) was in a group of terrorists who took over the police HQ, killed secretaries, civilians, cops anyone they could see, and marched hostages into the street.

General Nguyễn Ngọc Loan shouted to the hostages, 'who are the VC?' They all pointed at Nguyễn Văn Lém. Loan was medivaced out of VN May '68.

I have read that a reason why Loan executed that guy is because only a very short time before, his friend, a fellow police officer had been killed and his wife and children had all had their throats cut by the VC and they found this guy qwho is executed, just near the home of Loan's friend so it was likely that the guy was in the group of VC who murdered Loan's friend and family. So it was a kind of revenge execution. But Loan did alot of good things for the Vietnamese people after that pic.

Michael Herr is a great writer. Ultimately though, both he and the veterans interviewed, are trying to put into words what truly cannot be put into words.

As for the Eddie Adams photo of Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing the VC agent, a little backstory is needed. Loan apparently went to the home of a friend in Saigon shortly after the Tet Offensive began. He found the friend and his entire family hacked to death with axes. The VC agent had perpetrated the killings.

My point, however, was that there was a motivation for Loan's act due to what the VC agent had done to his friend's family - the act was not one of simple butchery. I think that clip is often aired with no context and that is unfortunate. Was Loan's execution of the agent terrible? Yes. Was the agent's massacre of the policeman's family, which precipitated Loan shooting him equally terrible? Yes. War is a terrible business - for both sides.

Loan Nguyen was general, and in charge of security in Saigon so i think in a wartime situation it's his duty. Whether this instant justice was appropriate i don't know, the VC guy probably got what he deserved. Otherwise he'd been on trial and should have deserved death penalty anyway for his warcrimes, so i think it was not that shocking. By the way, do journalists and photographer's know the difference between a pistol and a revolver? apparently not.
