Sentinel wasn't evil. He did what he thought was the best thing for his race, and felt regret for having to involve the human race in a fight he thought was theirs. Sentinel was a tragic hero who just wanted the chance to see more of his people live in harmony, at any cost, even if it meant the cost of another civilization. To build a race, he had to destroy a race. If I were in his position, I would've done the exact same thing.

If your realtive needed money for a surgery and didnt have enough, would you steal, or worse, kill someone and take his money just to help your relative? you think that would be doing good? yes you might save your relative, but you already killed someone for it, so you didnt do much saving...

Well, I wouldn't say that he had to become "evil", as good and evil is subjective. And while Optimus had indeed defeated Sentinel, he also signed the death warrant for his race.

Actually, he considered his race dead before Sentinel's betrayal. After the loss of the Allspark, he simply didn't care about his race anymore, and besides, he already has a new home for all he's concerned with.
