  • How does a Long EZ perform in the storm? I know it has an issue with rain, but that can be solved with vortex generators. Since it is light, it seems logical that it would get thrown around quit a bit, but it is also fast and smooth which would make me think that it could comfortably slip right through the edge. Reading the POH I see it can handle crosswind component as great as 18 knots for takeoff, 28 for landing and gusty winds up to 45 knots in flight.

  • @ArtepMetal Will I fly a VariEZE which might react a little different than a LongEZ. But as you might be able to see it was not turbulent at all, where we were flying. We stayed way south of the show and were just onlookers from the distance. The issue with rain does not necessarily apply to every aircraft (VE or LE). It kinda depends on, how the builders shaped the canard (meaning the tolerances). Some react with a drop of the nose, some pick it up and some just start bopping along.

  • @ArtepMetal We flew through a thick cloud once and my canard picked up some condensation which resulted in a slight but not uncontrollable or violent drop of the nose. The VE demonstrated crosswind components up to 20 kts and gusts while taxxing up to 45 kts. In flight it doesn't really matter how strong the wind blows. Hopefully it's a tailwind like when we came back. We did almost 200 mph over ground at times versus sometimes under 100 mph over ground going west. That was depressing...

  • @ATLRCFlyer Excellent. The design of these airplanes is genius. I hear that with the long rudders it should handle 35 knot direct cross and another canard pilot tells me he landed in a 40 knot direct cross and it just straightened out on the ground. What is your performance and endurance like?

  • @ArtepMetal My VE cruises around 135 kts true at 10000 ft. Endurance is about 950 miles with around 28 gal on board. As soon as I put the Klaus Savier wheelpants on (someday) she'll gain another 8-10 kts true.

The C85 is a bulletproof engine and the power-weight ratio is just right for the VE. Makes it a simple, yet highly performing aircraft. My VE will do what conventional airplanes need twice the horsepower and fuel burn for...

  • Looks worse now...:)
