Marilyn Monroe was originally the first choice to play Candy, but Jean Peters was chosen instead because she was better suited for the role. Jean & Marilyn were friends off the set and starred together in Niagra.
Jean Peters never ceases to amaze me. Of course, I cannot be truly objective because I had a huge crush on her and I still have, half a century later. But I find it interesting that modern viewers seem to discover her and to find her so modern. I hear comments like :"Hey, mac, who's that, who's THAT, man she's HOT!" Stuff like that. She seems to GROW on them. Heh! I'm not surprised! That's how Jean Peters was!..........
Jean Peters usually played the good girl. Interesting to see this role. No winder Howard Hughes fell for her just watching her in a movie. Widmark could out act anyone by just standing still. Best under rated actor ever. Miss his energy and devotion to any role he played. Never made a bad movie. Great character actors. Thanks for this.
The performances here are amazing. The actors don't have to speak; the expressions on their faces show what hard, tough people they are. They truly embody their roles.
People who think the anti hero originated with Clint Eastwood's Man With No name should watch this film. Widmark deserved at least a nomination for his wonderfully complex role. And Jean Peters-wow!!!
Nothing like a B+W classic for real art , these guys used light as a tool instead of color...jean Peters is a complete knock-out.....I'm biased for dark haired woman, but she is simply perfect...what a beautiful face, stunning!
Richard Widmark excelled in film noir - "Kiss Of Death", "The Street With No Name", "Road House", "No Way Out", "Night And The City", "Panic In The Streets" and this film. Jean Peters was a lovely woman.
I love Richard Widmark here and in The Night and the City (my favorite film noir), too. Widmark and Jean Peters have some pretty steamy chemistry in this film!
"Pickpocket" is a Bresson film, not related to this film. Each film is essential. If you like this film, look for "RIfifi" and early Kubrick: "The Killing" and "Killer's Kiss".
Thanks for showing this! Another great Widmark/Fox Film Noir. And boy is that Jean Peters sexy. Some great Noir scenes. And Thelma Ritter was always a good character actress. Ditto Samuel Fuller- a great director.

Jean Peters did not want to play a sexy role in this film..she wanted her good acting to show through not her beautiful face and figure..

Richard Widmark. A great actor and one of my favorites. He was so underrated. So glad we have his films to remember him by.

Noir. A pickpocket or other "anti-hero" is still scum. Noir essentially means even the hero and heroine are scum.

@macemcguire Actually there are plenty of guys credited as the anti-hero way before Eastwood, Brando, Clift, Dean, etc.
It actually started back as early as the silent era with Lon Chaney (from what I could tell).

Love Richard Widmark here and in The Night and the City. I wonder what he said about working with both Sam Fuller and Jules Dassin.

Dassin was treated disgracefully by the powers that were and are.

I think he left the US in ? 1952? and never returned.

Thelma Ritter is one of the most under-rated, underappreciated actresses, right along with Claire Trevor and Gladys George. She is incredible!
