i have dealt with depression and anxiety for over 12yrs.. but i also am a strong believer in PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. and hope to g_d that if i ever did something that endangered the lives of others that i would be prosecuted like everyone else. there have are times that i' feel "out of control" and the first thing i do i go to a hospital or friend. don't get me wrong, i do believe that some ppl are so mentally gone that they aren't responsible. i doubt this woman was that bad though.
Hi Bluebutdude!! The prosecutor probably felt that winning a conviction was slim due to the woman's proven depression illness. She was not held criminally responsible but what about a civil court case. I know this sucks but that is the way it is. Remember the case of Houston mom Andrea Yates? She is now an inmate in a mental hospital. And what about Susan Smith of Union South Carolina? I don't think she's dead either.
It is almost unbelievable how erratic your behavior can be and also how little you remember after the fact when dealing with severe depression. I still sometimes have trouble believing my family when they tell me some of the things I did before I recieved effective treatment.
uhg i cant believe how stupid people were back then (and still are today) every video i see, all the kids are either not in a carseat at all or not in one corectly.
The officer was very, very brave putting his car in the path to save that family but....I'm not sure I agree with him trying to stop the traffic. I'm sure he wanted them on the side of the road but they stopped in the road making themselves sitting targets. Just wonder if that was a good call.
depression is a flimsy excuse for that at best. i spent a good deal of summer '09 depressed. i was unemployed, had no forseeable future, began to become withdrawn which didn't help.. the whole time i had my car and didn't do anything like this. DEPRESSION DOES NOT AFFECT YOU LIKE THAT, PERIOD. what a dumb bitch.
My doctor put me on meds to sleep, because of depression and anxiety I was a complete insomniac, one of the meds, was still in my system one morning after I had taken my friend to school, on the way home I just remember thinking why not just just gun it and and hit whatever and end it all now, I called my doctor immediately when I got home explained it to him, he said stop taking them right away. Not once had I been suicidal before or after. they have warnings for pills like that now.
@allgood2000 Immediately after it says "Footage taped on....." it is a white truck at 5:24 then at 5:33 it is an orange truck. 6:44 it looks white again to me.
It would have made more sense for the woman to be charged with two counts of reckless driving, a speeding ticket, and five counts of endangering other drivers. Driving the wrong way on a highway should only be done by stunt drivers, unless of course you're playing Midtown Madness or Midtown Madness 2 where driving the wrong way is permitted!
I was telling a friend about this segment yesterday-she's a therapist and works at the court clinic-and she told me depression has nothing to do with hurting other people.
She said depression has to do with feelings, not actions, and in this state the woman would never have been deemed criminally insane. Even if she had, they would have put her in an institution, which would take longer to get released from than jail.
It seems like no one wants to be responsible for their actions.
the most stupid thing is that she had no charges pressed on her. She endangers the life of others and she comes clean. That bitchis gonna get a bullet up her ass.
folks who say that the suicide woman is stupid are the stupid ones. When someone is emotionaly unstable, it is hard for them to control their emotions. However, today this woman would be treated for her emotional problems and sent to jail for endangering the lives of others. With treatment she would be normal, therefore the law now will considers her actions homicidal even if she dosen't take her medications.
The cop trying to stop traffic should have used a technique called a "traffic break"—weaving very rapidly and repeatedly across all lanes and gradually slowing down.
That was stupid that despite the woman's condition, she wasn't criminally responsible for putting other people's lives in danger. She should have been arrested and charged for attempting murder and endangering others, no matter what her condition was. Depression doesn't give you an excuse. She should have been arrested!!!!!
By the way....allgood2000, thanks for uploading this program. It was a good show back then and still is today.
Dude, Depression is very serious, I suffer from depression, and if i was her, i would be doin' the same god damn thing, but i cant drive. Now don't complain about some one gettin' off easy for a disability that you DON'T have and have NEVER experienced.
Also, putting her away for 20 years would have been un-lawful because no one was killed.
Well I DO have depression, and I have no idea what my depression has to do with hurting other people. It doesn't, and I never think of hurting others. If I DID hurt someone, I would expect to go to jail like everyone else.
Having depression doesn't put me above the law, and I have no right to use my own issues as an excuse to hurt others.
vickiormindyb, I have also dealt with depression before and would never dream of hurting other people either. She should not have gotten away with it.
What does her feeling suicidal have to do w/ the other people she hurt? If she really wanted to hurt only herself, why did she involve innocent bystanders?
That's the first time I've heard of depression rendering a person "not responsible for a criminal act."
Holy crap if I was in the way of that car I would be scared as hell and once the car had passed me I would be sooo thankful that she did not hit my car
We had a deal like that here in Dallas a few months back. Some derainged psycho went wrong way on highway trying to commit suicide. Killed a family of 3. Psycho survived & was charged with 3 counts of capital murder.
She was promptly found guilty and, for once I agree with, she got life in prison. She wanted to die because she thought life was bad, now she's tormented about how good it used to be.
yer if he hadn't had sped up infront of the van then the baby and the woman and the man would have died. i think getting back injuries may have been worth it
ok just because you have a fucked life and your depressed does not mean you have to fuckin indanger other people kinda like those terriost on 9/11 they had fucked up lives and wanted to kill them selve and others. pyhcotic bitch i bet she never took in to it by studying when she was young.
Stupid idiot! I have depression and I have felt suicidal but there was no reason for her to bring other people into her crap! She should have gone to jail.
Suicidal people are very selfish. They don't care about the impact they are leaving behind. They aren't thinking about those who know and love them and how their suicide will affect them.
I hate suicidal people like that, especially those who park their car on traintracks putting more people's lives in danger. Or those idiots who shoot up a school then kill themselves. This may be a horrible thing to say, but if y ou want to kill yourself just do it and leave the rest of us alone!
princenippy you seem to be pretty ignorant.. obviously she was not crazy.. you must not know anyone who has mental disorders.. you don't just prosecute someone who is mentally ill. gosh your an idiot!
That's probably the most selfish thing you can do- even if she has depression- that's the most selfish thing- taking out people with you! She needed more than a slap on the wrist!
chris, yes it is going to seem selfish but people who have mental problems aren't in their right mind... obviously. you can't tell someone that who has depression. you don't know what is going on in their head or what they are going through.. so seriously... leave your comments to yourself.
You know, I have had some problems, and have known many people who were depressed, and they had a sense of what was right and what was wrong. Even if you are depressed, don't add sadness to someone else's life. Everybody goes through depression, and most people don't kill themselves, but when they do, that is incredibly selfish. Adding onto the selfishness is taking people with you- they wouldn't feel sorry for you, just mad.
I'm sorry cutelovelylisa, but I have to agree with Chris. It's her prerogative to commit suicide, but doing it in a way that will injure or kill other people is pretty selfish. Depression does not equal insanity.
allgood2000, do you have the episode of a woman that had a mechanical function on her vehicle and as a result was speeding down the interstate at 110 mph? If I remember correctly it aired around 1993-1994 or so.
Even if she wanted to kill herself, there's no reason to take other people with her... I agree, she should've been prosecuted. Not that I'm saying suicide is a good thing, but if was determined to die, she could've found a way that wouldn't hurt anyone else.
Don't know what kind of sport-tuned suspension her Aspen must have had for those kind of high speed manouvers, but I would never imagine mine would have that capability, especially to cross a grass median at 100 MPH... I still drive that car today.
I think they did this re-enactment at lower speeds and then sped up the film to make it look like she was going 90. I read an article about this segment, and I think it said they filmed the crash at 30 mph and sped up the film to make it look more violent.
Obvioulsy this was awful, but the moment I saw that woman holding her baby rather than having it in a proper seat I just get so ANGRY. Why do people put their little one's at risk? Do they not have brains? Do they just think nothing will happen to them because they are so freakin SPECIAL? PUT YOUR KIDS IN SEATS and they dont belong in the front seat EITHER!!!!
I worked as a child welfare agent and it would amaze me at the stories people would tell or the things I witnessed. One mother gave her infant melted ice cream as formula! Whether or not this was a minor technicality in the reenactment is another thing. This event occurred over 20 years ago and laws have changed. But it does amaze me how some people are brought up-they honestly don't know what their doing is harmful. Your comment made me think.
I work as a PI and one of the things I do is investigation transport accidents. During that time the thing that has really struck me is the stupid risks people take, especially with infants who cant take responsibility themselves and need protection. Most accidents are avoidable and most injuries are even more so. I am sure the law has changed since then but man, some people do some dumb shit.
Don't know what kind of sport-tuned suspension her Aspen must have had for those kind of high speed manouvers, but I would never imagine mine would have that capability, especially to cross a grass median at 100 MPH... I still drive that car today.
I was both impressed by the driving ability, and saddened by the tragic final outcome of this episode. Nice to see the posting from the Cannons. Too bad Ken's career was ended by his injuries.
At the time I was driving a 4 door Dodge Aspen with a vinyl roof similar to the one being driven by the lady against the traffic. I never forgot the camera view of the hubcap on the front wheel as the car was weaving through traffic at high speed, or the sound of the screaming Slant 6.
Thanks for posting this video. We are the Cannon Family in this episode. Update: Caitlin, our daughter is 20 and in college. We moved to California in 1992. We've lost track of Ken - would love to reconnect and introduce Caitlin to her guardian angel.
We don't, but Laura Cannon e-mailed me and asked for the segment long before I ever started uploading to youtube. She knew names and details that someone would only know if they had this on tape and watched it a lot, or if they were involved. She commented on the video right after I e-mailed her to let her know it was up, so I would say there's a good chance it's her. As for some of the other videos, it's anyone's guess.
Patrol officer Greg L. here: The law this state had regarding her sentencing was BS.
And her sister, who avidly defends her actions; all I can say to that is 'How bizarre.'

Even if she wanted to kill herself, there's no reason to take other people with her... I agree, she should've been prosecuted. Not that I'm saying suicide is a good thing, but if was determined to die, she could've found a way that wouldn't hurt anyone else.

You're exactly right. There are less selfish ways to commit suicide.

Why would this segment fall under an Ambulance category rather than a policecar, because this involves the police in the beginning?

I was both impressed by the driving ability, and saddened by the tragic final outcome of this episode. Nice to see the posting from the Cannons. Too bad Ken's career was ended by his injuries.

Yes, but I'm sure he doesn't regret what he did that day one bit.

I remember this very well from when it was aired!

How do we know all the users claiming to be the people in these Rescue 911 videos arent imposters?
MetalSanke 3 years ago
We don't, but Laura Cannon e-mailed me and asked for the segment long before I ever started uploading to youtube. She knew names and details that someone would only know if they had this on tape and watched it a lot, or if they were involved. She commented on the video right after I e-mailed her to let her know it was up, so I would say there's a good chance it's her. As for some of the other videos, it's anyone's guess.

This woman seemed to have a major mental problem. No wonder she drove like she was desperate to end her life.
