This is more encouraging then intimidating. Why not advocate for volunteer groups, why not advocate for community involvement? If we really hate the government meddling in everything i would think people would welcome the idea of the community taking charge in case of social problems and emergency situations. A friend of mine has been in the army for jsut under 20 years. She is going to retire immediately at 20 years. She cannot take the leadership at the top anymore. She said just about all of her troops under her feel sold out(obviously they were sold out long long ago). Many generals have left. Generals have been called out of retirement. The ones who left see 3 solutions. First, retire. Second, continue to wear that fake smile and continue to take orders. Thirdly, revolt and face treason.

I am just trying to piece this massive puzzle together. On HR 3590, the Healthcare Bill that was jammed up our butts without any lube. On page 1312 there is talk of the Ready Reserve Corps. I don't know much at all about this. I could not find much info anywhere. Could this be the start of this private army??? The Pres is to decide what the national emergencies are. Obviously, the bill does not list the emergencies. This is getting scary!!!!!

He's talking about going back to the basic concept of national defense based on a well-ordered militia under local authority, not some whacko like the private militias., and all of the emergency services that the national guard do now done by a force that can be called up at a moment's notice. Kind of like the German concept of the Wehrdienst and Ersatzdienst. It would be a lot cheaper and just as effective as our massive standing army for defense, but useless in a war of aggression.

@leftysergeant Okay.....the question is.....why? As you pointed out, we already have National Guard under local authority, and the State NG units are already within the states - it's not like a federal agency could respond any faster...
The problem with this (objectively) is the fact that IT JUST LOOKS BAD. It is in conflict with the relationship between the Federal Gov't and the States.
In short, even if you love Obama, it is okay to call this a really bad idea.....

This is more encouraging then intimidating. Why not advocate for volunteer groups, why not advocate for community involvement? If we really hate the government meddling in everything i would think people would welcome the idea of the community taking charge in case of social problems and emergency situations. This isn't about a secret army- its about The Red Cross, The peace corps, homeless shelters, youth groups, and elderly homes. Whats so terrible about community involvement?

@frank1es1 Because I actually have worked with such groups. CERT Community Emergency Response team. If he's not referring to volunteer groups then it would be law enforcement, emergency responders, ER staff ect. I dont know where in his speech Obama raising a private army
That sounds bit loonier then my statement. Their are already legal provisions that protect state sovereignty. One being that no military force can perform missions within any state with out the Governor's consent.
