I think Donny influenced many artists who became great. Soul Music sounded different prior his 1970 "Everything is Everything" release. If one listens to Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder prior to "What's Going On" (1971) and "Talking Book" (1972), their sound was different. Donny truly influenced them.
Donny said he wanted to create symphonies. Listening to Extension Of A Man gives us a peak at what his symphonies would sound like. That album is an eclectic of a many genres of music...and IT WORKS. Only Donny could pull that off.
as gifted as donny hathaway was, he wasnt universally embraced. i think his mental issues and lack of physical charisma had something to do with that. during the '70s there was a myriad of talented artists that dominated the music scene. e.g. the jackson five, curtis mayfield, marvin gaye, stevie wonder,etc....and that certainly played a part in donny's modest success as a solo artist. notwithstanding, donny is my favorite singer of all time! he was so special
I love every note he sang and every lyric he spoke. He participated in a Minoritry vendor event in Oklahoma. I was the OU rep. I saw he walking down the aisle in the booth area and I became speechless. He passed our booth and smiled. A dream had come true.
We all miss him, even those of us who are a far, but he has influenced so many musicians, and that's the legacy that he left. Hopefully we'll find an answer to depression soon. I'm also a musician and live with the same thing everyday.
Donny captured the moment......sung from the heart.....such simple lyrics but this great man brought out the emotion as he always does with his music & voice......amazing!!!!! RIP Donny
I have been with my husband for 25 years this year, and no song has encapsulated how I feel as much as this one....Donny Hathaway was a master of turning lyrical emotions into powerful feelings....thank you xxx
30 years has passed since our beloved soul pioneer had left us...Ol' Donny Hathaway. Wish I had the time to meet him or seen him in concert for the first time. He's a heckuva musician/singer/arranger/composer. They'll never another one but his music, soul and spirit carries us on today.
@imthebrother - Thanks for posting: I had the good fortune to hear Donny live. My mother, believe it or not, MADE me go to the show, to keep me out of trouble with my brothers n sister. That was probably my first live concert and I remember it like it was yesterday. Donny came out and was booed - by the time he finished it was a standing ovation, I was the youngest and she thought that would be best for me.... and I'm glad she did!! I've been a fan since - and that was in the 60's!
a very serious tune that was so very deep sweet, and tooooooo short.just like 'we both deserve each other,s love" by ltd. i was looking to hear this on here, now i see what had happened .great post
Can anyone tell me where I can find A Song For You on you tube. And I'm not talking about one of those fake covers. I want to hear the legend sing it. Thanks.
A Song for You used to be on Youtube, but was muted and/or removed for copyright issues. I used to listen to it all the time and I miss having it here. It's a beautiful classic.
Another beautiful song he's a unique soul singer,he had a real talent ,it is curious that he never had a successful career as Al Green or Marvin Gaye for example.
@dannpenn He pioneered the eclectic sophisticated soul that Stevie Wonder would take to the next level commercially. Most of the fan favorites Donny sang were written/recorded by someone else. It was always a source of frustrations that his hits were with his friend Roberta Flack and not on his own....he always wondered why he didn't get the love Stevie got....
Hi...there's nothing wrong with your comment...but Donny & Roberta never had any other kind of relationship other than a love of music. Donny loved Eulaulah. The rumor of Donny & Roberta was always a false rumor. Take care.
Love this song!
