  • Lets swear that we will get with the times...

  • In his 1st graphic novel, "It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken", Seth pays homage to the wit & sophistication of the magazine cartoon.Disaffected by the crassness of contemporary culture,Seth takes refuge in a quest to uncover the life & work of Kalo,a forgotten New Yorker cartoonist from the 1940s...

  • BADASSTUNE

  • After the cartoonist Gene Byrnes drew the panel It's a Great Life If You Don't Weaken, which was syndicated by the New York Evening Telegram from 1915 to 1919, the phrase became a rallying cry for American soldiers during World War I.

  • WHO ARE THESE FOUR JOKERS WHO DONT LIKE THIS SONG. WEAK.

  • Tragically Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow only 83000 views

  • Find somewhere to grow...

  • @damage98 I GOT A SPOT LOL

  • This band is one of the most signifagent ensembles in music history. Whether from Canada or from the Moon, important music has been shared with the world. Personally I am forever grateful for both the poetry and the music. Most probably are not aware of what an extensive and diverse catalogue has been produced. Lyrically, as important as Leonard Cohen, musically, on par with the best of the best. What The Hip has never overlooked is that great music is not about notes, its about the space nbtwn

  • The white suits give me shivers.

  • damn I forgot how awesome this band is; that line about the "forest of whispering speakers" gets me every time...

  • i love the hip

  • Fuck the people who disliked this shit....

  • Who the hell are the three that dislike this?? i would like to meet these people and see what they think real music is.

  • @Primeswitch they obviously weakened...

  • "in the forget-your-skates dream"

brilliantly canadian, i've had those dreams...love it, gotta love the hip if yer canadian.

  • @timothyevanrichard I forgot my power-saw once. Very embarrassing

  • @damnthatchainsaw there IS now 3 more idiots? :) I'd say there ARE 4.

  • omg OSHAWA!!!!!!!!!

  • This song is beautiful, i love how the make the guitar in the backroung sound like water dripping, it just makes it that prettier.

  • filmed in oshawa ontario

  • @oshawaphysics cool didnt know, i was born there. used to live on cadillac street, never been since lol

  • I'm going to see them live tonight! should be awesome.I hope they play this song.

  • Anybody else think this video has an eerie "Hotel California" feel to it?

  • Definitley, good observation!

  • yeah it does huh, i never would have noticed if you hadnt mentioned it.

  • Okay, I admit it.... I weakened.

Am I only one out there did?

  • nope

  • @cyberwanderer

nope, you are not the only one..

  • This vid seems to be saying 'Even if some perfomances are contrived for a special commercial audience, we still love playing and the music has integrity.'

What does he say to the matron at the end?

  • He says--"You have a very lovely home."

  • how do you know he says that?...just wondering

  • What is this album called?>

  • in violet light

  • In Violet Light

  • pattybow

    It's called: In Violet Light

    :)

  • for those of you wondering what this and any other TH song is about, you can find the stories behind them on hipmuseum(dot)com

  • did not like this album when i first heard it. but now i love it!

  • I.d say.

  • yep, good deep evaluation!

  • It's about the dichotomy of staying true to your ideals versus "selling out." The Hip are playing a private party in the video to a bunch or bored, disinterested rich. While probably being paid a lot of money it is counter to their ideals-hence the strange wardrobe and uncomfortable looks. The title and the lyrics are inconsistent, another Hip device. For a "good life" they weakened and sold out. It's the fight against weakening that is the issue. Discuss.

  • "Let's go somewhere we're needed"

They're certainly not needed at this posh backyard-court party playing to rich dummies who wouldn't know good music if you plastered it to their forehead. The Hip are the 'people's' band, and by gosh I love 'em.

  • You are aboot bullshit, wigger, eh?

  • i notice you post something bad about the hip in alot of their videos you must be really jealous of how great Canadian icon they are and no one knows you

  • I've always loved all the bare trees in this video...the ones in the beginning and the ones used as their stage backdrop; they seem to go with the song.

  • This one and Escape is at hand for the traveling man are perfect to enjoy on the car radio as you lay on the hood and gaze at the stars on some dusty, deserted road outside of Medicine Hat.

  • d'ont waste your time with unsignicant things and people, love yourself and your friends be who you are and live your life the better way you can

  • We're Canadian.Maybe we ain't all that easy with wealth and tings!

  • I would have to say it means, live life day to day don't fall into yesterdays problems. Live your life today, life changes so keep up with it, don't fall behind. Keep with the times. Life can be good if you live it good.

  • of course you are ! (n)

  • lol well check out my youtube channel and see if i look like "me" in the video if you really care. I doubt you do though, cuz i wouldn't.

  • I don't know who you're trying to kid buddy... But thats obviously not you...

  • He said to her, your toilets broken and there is alot of shit on the floor.

  • haha.

  • LMAO

  • what does this song mean anybody no?

  • I agree, this song is great when your thinking of what the heck your doing up so late!!!! A true "thinking" tune

    Cheers

  • This is one of those songs i would listen to in the dark and let my mind wonder.

  • I think he just told her to stick it in her ear...

  • Best Hip song (and there are MANY) Even better live!!!

  • I agree totally, it's my fav. song and always will be. I wish they would play at my wedding.

  • you should try messaging them, you might be able to pull some strings.

  • Simply the best Canadian export ever!! One of the best live bands rocking out today...Gordie, the lead singer is worth the price of admission alone...do yourself a favour and see them live!!

  • The Hip, Springsteen, Tom Cochrane common who's better!!

  • I only listen to hip-hop normally, but my father listen to this band since i'm born.. So i got this in my blood ya know..

  • my favourite band, not just a flavour of the month either.. they've always been the very best, especially at a lyrical stand point

  • I had a sunset video with this song as the mood music. I got a warning from youtube about copyright complaint.

I love this song. so meaningful and beautiful...

now it has a taint to it.

    sad really

  • Guaranteed it wasn't the band, they love bootlegs and anything fan-related involving their music. It was likely the label's doing, so don't let it ruin the song for you.

  • To see skates, denotes discord among your associates.

To see young people skating on roller skates, foretells that you will enjoy good health, and feel enthusiastic over the pleasures you are able to contribute to others.

  • this is a common Canadian dream. It is akin to the "Showing up at school, or work, naked dream'. To show up at the rink without your skates is the same sort of exposure; unprepared, unfinished dread.

  • If you like The Hip check out a band called The National. They are from Texas but good quality toonz as well.

  • Once in a rare while I'm glad most of my American friends don't know who the Hip are.. it's like a northern gem all our own..

But then I wake up and say 'Fuck it! Music this good should be shared and known by all!'

lol.. sorry for the mini rant, but Damn, what an amazing band

  • by the by, who fer gat ther skates? lol. Luv this song. It's my favourite but as a Canadian, keep running into the prob of rep'ing an american. That really sucks, man!!!! Its like saying the Dutch are all homogenized, like milk... Dutch/ Nederla ds... should all be the same .... right??? I know what an ignornat statement I just made but do you? Prove my point!!! Please!

  • sorry, but that all sounded so terrible. My English is deteriorating, perhaps. Sorry to all!!!!

  • I agree with u totally...the Hip r Canada's best hidden gem that only we can truly appreciate because they symbolize everything that is Canadian...humble, intelligent, and incredibly talented. The Hip is more than just the music, each song tells a story

  • what a beautiful song. wow!!!

  • one of my favorites.

  • This is a really great song! I love the Hip!

  • one of the best!

    The Hip rule!

  • thanks quetzie

  • This is my favorite song by the hip!

  • I meant thanks Quetz..........!!!! Periods and periods with hats! Great video!

  • Yeah..now watch "Bobcaygeon" you'll love it also!!!

  • its all about not selling out.

  • Wow, this is definitely hip and heavy, I'm buying! Thats Tragically Quetzie lol...they are awesome!

  • fricken awesome one of my favorite song i am only 13 and have seen them 3 times

  • I like that.......Gord is HOT, intense, I like that!

  • The Hip Rock!I'm from northern new york not far from kingston ont. where hip are from..I have seen them 25 times since 1991!!!

  • Yeah id say this is one of my top 5 favorite hip songs! the lyrics are so freakin great!

  • great! i just moved to kingston for university and actually just started listening to these guys they are great!

i was on wolfe island the other day for a race not sure if you know where that is and there were some americans running too!

  • I'm a Canadian now living in Holland but it's so nice to listen to familiar music, like The Hip. It almost makes me feel like I am at home. So many good memories arise when I listen to their music. Long live The Hip!

  • hey what are you up to all the way in holland?

  • I'm a student at the moment but I am planning on staying. It's awesome here. You can't believe how beautiful it is here.

  • Cool I'm Canadian too going to Queen's but I just plan on travelling once school is done. Exchange is kinda out of the way academically I think.

  • What are you studying and what year are you in?

  • I'm in second year majoring in political studies. Going great so far. What about you? And don't tell me your in Amsterdam I'd be so jealous!!

  • I am not in Amsterdam but if you are thinking that is the only place where there are coffeeshops, you would be mistaken. They are in just about every city here. I'm working on my masters in archaeology. The university in Leiden sucks. Never go there. You will not get any support or even a half decent education. I cannot wait to finish my degree so I never have to deal with this incompetant school system again. The city is great and so are the people but the school.... ARGH!

  • Yea, amazing song...

  • probably one of the BEST hip songs ever. simply amazing...100% canadian...the hip, the best bud, the most beautiful country in the world!

who's got it better than us?

    :)

  • I really love the TH. they are so awesome i wish i could go to the pemberton festival.

  • I love the songs where you can't tell if hes being really profound or just random.

  • it IS a good life

this song came back into my life at the exact same time I was living it

how many bands are in the Hip's category?

maybe Radiohead, Arcade Fire, the list is short...

I once thought In Violet Light was a "weak"

    album...I don't think that anymore

  • I used to thing so too, but this album is excellent. In fact, there are few hip songs I don't like. Even the first album, Last American Exit and Evelyn are awesome...

  • Perhaps i was too hard on the rich, but they don't seem to be too happy do they??? 5 stars for this song though, new fan of this group!!!

  • Great juxtaposition between the fucktard uber-wealthy and the REAL world. Love this song!!!

  • lol right on Quetzie

  • Really...being RICH does not necessarily make one "happy"...Hey Rocket glad you turned me on to the Hip, I'm a BIG Groupy now!!!

  • ya this def one of my favorite hip songs

  • Why is there only 9000 hits on this song? It's a classic

  • It's also a canadian classic...we've got some of the best music nobody's ever heard of...the Hip kick ass!

  • agreed

  • love the hip makes me proud 2 b canadian

  • Possibly their best song

  • this song is amazing

  • Put it into google with quotes around it, if those are the right words, word for word, it'll tell you what song.

  • I love this song!! It needs to be on the myspace playlist!!!!

  • Filmed at Parkwood Estate in Oshawa, ON. Parkwood was the family home of Sam McLaughlin, founder of GM of Canada.

  • This is probably one of the hips lesser known gems, my favourite, and probably my only favourite they didn't play when i saw them live in Toronto :(

  • yeah i couldn't belive they didn't play it in toronto....!!!!

  • A Man Being Unmasked at a Masquerade:

Represents the inevitable outcome for anyone who is participating in a "Masquerade". He can get away with wearing the "Mask" for a period of time, but eventually circumstances will lead him to have to reveal himself sooner or later. This could happen voluntarily or involuntarily. Aquarius 18

  • save the psycho-babble

  • Proceeding on a need to know.

  • "There is hardly any mental misery worse than that of having our own serious phrases, our own rooted beliefs, caricatured by a charlatan or a hireling." ... George Eliot

  • and if you go to Hell

    i will remember You.

  • one of their best live songs!

  • I wonder if the family in the video was inspired by the British Royals who patiently sat through the Hip's performance without showing any emotion.

  • made me cry last year in Amsterdam at the Paradiso. Wanted to tear my skin of to get closer to the beaty of it.

  • I absolutely love this fucking song.

    HIPHIPHIP !

    <3333
