Dang it, I'll try again. John Scofield once said something like, "when you start comparing music, you lose the beauty of simply listening to it." he's played with Joey quite a bit. So if you're going to post here about who is better than whom, you're missing the beauty of just listening. That said, Joey Baron is the greatest drummer who ever lived. I've seen him with Naked City, Frissell, Masada and Tim Berne. I HAVE SPOKEN!
@RiverKanoff Joey Baron keeps his kick loose for a really good reason. He plays it the way an orchestral percussionist does, using the beater to choke or muffle the drum when he wants to and leaving it open when he wants that big sound. I've worked with this bass drum technique quite a bit over the years. It's super difficult at first but turns out to be great fun and very colorful once you get the hang of it.
a friend of mine posted this to his fb page, and i was "who's joey baron ?" boy did i find out !!! this is probably my most favorite drum solo of all time !
i'm not a narsistic motherfucker but oepssssssssssssssssssssss!great ofcours respect he got the scills i must say and faster he is!!!!!! wish i had some of this modern i phone schit! love this R
amen to the last comment. some sad evidence below of the lack of class in our public discourse these days and a sign of some very young minds comparing Joey Baron to Chambers and Weckl. All great players but as different in their musical paths as night and day. And I'll bet every player mentioned in the comments appreciates Baron's deep musicality. He's a great musician, not because of how fast or complicated he can play, but because of the beauty in his playing. My two cents anyway
Sad. An amazing drum solo spoiled by stupid comments. "Ooooh, Dave fucking Weckl this, oooooh Dennis fucking Chambers that....." etc.... Music wasn't a competition last time I checked......
Some people are always quick to judge. The difference between those people and Joey is that he's created this piece of music and he's a committed musician that has also created his own sound, that's why he's constantly working. The ones that criticize don't have non of these attributes.
He is good yes, but he does not compare to the likes of gary novak, or thomas lang, dave weckl.. but he has a pretty cool style!! As a drummer, I kinda know these things... let's see him setup with tony royster jr. I don't think he wants any part of that!!! plus his left foot is limited to what his hands are doing... showing lack of interdependence between limbs... But i won't take anything away, nice lil' grooves, but his kit sounds like he pulled it out of the garbage.. Keep goin at it!!

I didn't know royster was a fan, very interesting thanks for letting me know that, and I can see why joey is very talented and has a very fresh approach to the drums... Thanks for your insight!!

this is pretty much all i ever wanna hear come out of a drum kit. really...this is incredible. i wanna dance african mooves and shake my hips. this is rhythm.
Know what you mean with the bass drum but still, even though it's not my sound (and not yours either), it works perfectly for Joey. It sounds like a thunderous slap and it contrasts wonderfully with his otherwise high tuning.
what a fantastic solo. it's so nice to see this kind of performance instead of the usual barrage of "how fast can I go" noise. so many drummers disregard melody and time and open space in their solos, they could really take a lesson from a piece like this.
What i like most is that there's no sound compressor, limiter or smt that compromises the acoustic reality of acoustic drums... and some1 will tell that e-drums are better ... no way!
Seriously, this is one of the best drum solos I've ever heard or seen. Great to have it available here in such good quality.
