  • holy shit...you that galaga or something TV...i just found your channel and love it and subscribed to it

  • Awesome!!

  • What camera did you use for this video?

  • Thanks for this Tom! I am only a beginner to filmmaking, and your tutorials have helped me alot! :D

    - GNMfilms

  • WUT?? DROPPED HIS PANTS??

  • I have a normal homevideo HD camera I think it's called a DXG-595V would it be possible to connect a microphone like a singing mic through to one of those using a special cord which I have, and kind of have that as a boom mic replacement

  • your best light in here was exterior lighting with the girl who was wearing yellow clothes, what did you do to get this lighting outside ? Or was it just sunlight ?

  • My blog on film-making advice, working the film industry how to get jobs etc - hiccupsblog.blogspotX

  • Well Thanks again you are really a helpfull person!!

  • Hey thanks for the tip. anyway do you use anykind of noise reduction in post, since an ISO at 1600 will get some noise in the picture? what about the exposure meter in the camera, do you rely on it to get the intended exposure (normaly on 0) or do you use it below or above the 0 mark? Thanks and keep going with your filmmaking tips because they are really helpfull!

  • @inanimaniak Nope... i never use noise reduction... slight noise is okay. Nobody will notice the noise specialy if the shots look interesting. As for exposure i NEVER use the built in light meter, unless Im shooting a scene that is entirely gray. Cuz the light meter exposes shots to the mid range gray... so in a scene with a lot of contrast it doesnt know what to expose properly. So instead I judge by eye and by using the histogram. You can see how I get the perfect exposure in my EXPOSURE tut

  • Nice cinematography there!

    Two questions:

how far do you go with ISO of the camera without getting noise in the image?

whats the maximum aperture you use for low light situations (f1.4? f2?)

  • @inanimaniak Thnx! With the 7D I found ISO 1600 is the max... but if I do go to 1600 then I still make sure there is enough light to get a properly lit image at that speed. As for the aperture f1.8 is the lowest I use, beyond that the DOF is so narrow it's hard to keep things in focus unless you're doing a still shot.

  • Good material here. Thanks for sharing. I just did a series on 5D Filmmaking. Cheers!!!

  • Hey, was going to tell you that you can make some cash off your clips here at LessPulp and its Free!

  • made a short movie for school (2min) and I need to get as much views as possible, the more views the higher the grade and if you have any constructive critisism on how I can improve please do click my name to check it out

  • beautiful

  • Great tutorial! I'm new in this domain. I can edit my "movies" with Sony Vegas? It's good for something?

  • Great stuff. I love how simple you make it. I am getting ready to do a music video and your tips will come in very handy. That 500 watt light seems to do the trick on lots of sceens. Your video instructions will help many folks. Thanks so much

  • Fantastic stuff! This is very engaging because it's not just about lighting etc, in a studio, but has a context - you explain your choices and what (in the real world) influenced them. That's much more useful - I'm about to do an outdoor shoot with an actor and this will all be really useful in helping me plan it. Thanks for all the work you've done in sharing this. Top stuff.

  • hi tom. this was a very useful video tutorials. You are doing a great job. if u could come up with 35mm also wud be nice.

  • you should start selling these

  • What Software did you use for editing?

  • thanks man your tutorials are simply amazing!

  • It's really clever what you do with lighting. The same question that greg5566 asked about exposure sprung to my mind. Perhaps this could be a tutorial in itself since it makes a vast difference to the shots and it's an element that seems to be overlooked by many amateur filmmakers, such as myself. I've known about exposure and shutter speeds but have never known how to use them properly. Great tutorial though!

  • Awesome loved it

  • do you use a dimmer with the chimera or do you just set your aperture/ND filter instead to cut the intensity of light ? Also, i was wondering what was your shutter speed ? 24, 25 or 30 ?

  • Excellent tutorials. I'm wondering how you get the colours look really warm, kind of 'orangey' but still natural. I keep struggling with this magenta tint in Canon footage. Even on the 7D with proper WB with a grey card, red never turns out right. The footage always looks cold due to the magenta tint. The HV20 is even worse. When I try to remove some magenta in CC, it turns pale and too greenish. Any hint appreciated. Cheers

  • Anyway, thank you for all these, they are very instructive.

  • Hi--

When you adjust the exposure after turning on the soft box, how are you doing that? Are you simply looking through the LCD screen on the back of the camera? Or do you have the camera hooked up to a monitor? Are you just eyeballing it, or are you doing it more "scientifically," with meters and so on?

How important is it that you get the exposure how you want it in the camera, versus doing it in post production?

  • @greg5566 I first eye ball it... and then (with the DSLR's) take a still picture... once I do that I play back the still and check the histogram to verify my exposure... if needed i adjust the shutter or aperature and then take another still and check the histogram again untill i get it right. Its always important to get the exposure as close to the final as you can. In digital even more so than film. Specialy DSLR's cuz of the low bit rate of the codec

  • @polcan99 Ah, thank you. That's a good idea to use the histogram. In the video here you seemed to just turn it down a couple stops, sort of off the cuff. Thank you!

  • at 1:15 he's pulling focus manually or auto mode.????

any tips on pulling good manual focus?????

  • @digitally2007 Manual... I always use manual focus... In fact i can't remeber the last time I used auto focus... in professional work there is never anything better then a manual focus pull... just get a follow focus for your lenses and practice with it in order to get good crisp focus pulls.

  • Nice Tutorial bro ! any idea where Can I watch the whole movie ???

  • @brossmania Thnx! Im happy you find it useful... Check out the offical facebook page for screening info of this film... link is in the description of the video. Or just add me on facebook, where I always post the info: Tom Antos

  • @brossmania Hey, you can finally buy this film on DVD on my youtube channel. Click on the STORE link on the top.

  • @polcan99 What do you advise for the cinematography better? 7D or 5d Mark II ? Thanks :)

  • What cam did you use here?

  • @videolicker The Canon 7D

  • Great step by step explanation. One of the best video tutorial on youtube.

  • Hi man, if you could help me it would be the biggest help ever : what is the difference between 2:58 and 3:08. you simply added a soft box and lowered the exposure but eventhough, how come the face becomes textured and more detailed? that has been a mystery for me for ages.. I believe it is the cause is this perhaps:

the original light is from above and always is poor. the soft box is a SIDE light and as I know SIDE lighting gives always more texture

  • @leviterande More light creates a better exposure and therefore more detail is seen. Also the light is angled so that it creates slight shadows on the face which help add the texture detail.

  • What is this film called? It looks so funny Id like to see it.

  • For the shot of the 2 women talking outdoors, how do you avoid having large overexposed areas? Everything looks balanced. Was it overcast?

I'm using ND filters but I can't figure out to avoid the option of bright spots vs dark shadows without using HMI lights or reflectors.

  • @aelipinski: good point. mind if someone fills me in on this as well. thanks!!

  • Throughly enjoying the tuts, thanks very much!

  • Hi Polcan99, great tutorials, i just gotta say that the scene at 3:26-3:28 seemed kind of weird, like too shiny. Was i the only one noticed?

  • Hej mate awesome tutorial :D

  • why do you mix tungsten with daylight sources? looks a bit jarring.

  • lovely werk but one question is which issues does the 7d have pls i wanna know.

  • There are issues with the 7D, don't get me wrong this is a great camera.. However it over heats, I experienced this while shooting in direct sunlight, so keep that baby cool.. also remember that you are dealing with a compressed format, as polcan99 says make sure you get your white balance and exposure right as you do not have much latitude in post to make corrections.. my advice would be to hire before buying.. but 3 out of 5 compared to the red

  • 7d VS canon xh a1? what do u think is better?

  • Get the cannon rebel T2i its a few hundred dollars cheaper but the video quality is exactly the same! it just came out only diffrence is the manual option and quality on the "Picture Side" But the video side has same frame rate same quality same everyything!! its amazing!!

  • The part about your tutorials is the hot chics sprinkled throughout.

  • I didn't realize this was daytime in the kitchen, which now explains the blue wash.

  • Dude, these tutorials are kick ass. Can you do a post discussing the lighting in the scene of the two girls talking in the park with the fall settng?

  • nice, however the lighting seems stylized

  • btw if you take tutorial suggestions the following might be cool:

I'd quite enjoy a comprehensive tutorial showing the effects of frame rate on look /depth of field etc, basically showing the different adjustments and combinations in camera and the end result. (combined with required lighting adjustments :) but Im sure you're busy or got other plans, thanks again :)

  • great tutorial, you seem to answer questions as they pop into my head :) and the way you show the different lights being turned on, exposure adjustments (iris) on the camera etc really remind us of the decisions we need to make on set, thanks and keepem coming :)

  • I would like to ask how do you guys budget for this film?? is it fro your personal fund??

  • Really great teaching.

  • Comment removed
