The reason why the guy is pretty far away from the road is because he's looking for a possible command wire that maybe ran from the IED. The IED its self was placed near the road, the reason for the suit is because of the of high chance of a secondary explosive near by. I have much respect for EOD though.

i have 0 expirience in placing IED iam pacifist and against violence, but if you use comon sense and a bit physics you know that people drive on the road , where would you place IED if you were one of those insurgents ?

Disadvantages of EOD (Marines version): having to wear that ridiculously heavy suit in 120 weather and getting blown up.
Advantages: quick promotions, and if you decide to get out you pretty much have a job waiting for you on the civilian side.
