There are protests in SF ALL the time. I was at the Free Tibet one while waiting for the Olympic Torch, and that was HUGE. There were absolutely no fights at that one. There are antiwar ones, they're frequent. Critical Mass can be a little rough. But the protests are RARELY violent.
