Uhm can you guys please explain to me the MGS story line? I'm new but I do know that snake killed his boss and was then referred to as bigboss, then why are there different snakes now ? I know he was cloned but I don't know wen or y... I'm playin mgs portable ops rite now and the snake in portable ops he Iegit?
OKAI, so here's a VERY basic outline of the mgs story.
In the cold war, special operative naked snake is sent in to investigate rumours of a new communist weapon, named the shagohod, which means "treading behemoth" in russian. naked snake is then expected to also recover the weapon's creator, a russian scientist named sokolov. he meets up with his old girlfriend and mentor, a woman codenamed "the boss". cont.
the boss defects to russia, after colonel volgin, the leader of GRU, the russian secret servive, steals the shagohod and sokolov. volgin launches a davy crockett nuke at a small town. of course, the nuke is american made. it's then up to snake to kill the boss and prove america's innocence. so he, with the aid of his friends... cont.
major zero, para-medic, sigint, and EVA. he encounters ocelot, a major obsessed with his death. snake defeats many enemies, and encounters volgin. volgin describes "the philosopher's legacy", a massive cache of funds and technology hidden somewhere. Volgin says that he has a microfilm containing the location of the legacy. he hands this over to the boss. the boss takes EVA and the microfilm away. snake battles volgin, and escapes the shagohod's hangar.

Snake and major zero then start a new unit- the FOX unit. I haven't played any mgs psp games, so all I know here will be scetchy. FOX members revolt, snake's expected to kill them all. he creates FOXHOUND in order to destroy them all. FOXHOUND becomes corrupt, and forces snake (big boss) to make the fortress of Outer Heaven. The uprising of FOXHOUND drives a rift between the major and snake. the major has snake's genes.
So then, green beret codenamed "Solid Snake" is expected to investigate in the 90's. They get a distress call from their previous agent, codenamed "Gray Fox" labelled simply "Metal Gear". Snake finds that his former commander, Big Boss, is centered in the revolt. snake destroys metal gear, a bipedal walking nuke platform, leaves gray fox behind, and "kills" big boss.

2005- snake is called out of retirement, in order to stop a revolt on the alaskan island of Shadow Moses. the terrorist leaders call themselves "The Sons of Big Boss". They want a huge sum in cash, and big boss' remains. as revealed in the previous game, snake is supposedly a clone of big boss, and therefore big boss is his father.
snake's CO, colonel cambell, has a neice (actually his daughter, but he's keeping it a secret cuz he wants her to be a real soldier) named meryl who is wandering around shadow moses. snake meets naomi hunter, a woman who injects him with a mysterious substance.
snake encounters hal emmerich, mostly known as otacon. otacon has prototype stealth camo that allows him to slip past the guards. he also encounters a strange being in a cyborg suit, with a high frequency blade, calling himself the cyborg ninja. he discovers that ocelot is also on the team. he comes across the DARPA chief and the armstech president, Kenneth Baker, which both die mysteriously under supposed heart attacks.
snake meets his brother on several occasions, liquid snake. liquid wants big boss' body so he could use big boss' "perfect soldier" genes to perfect his own money. the money from the philosopher's legacy was used to make metal gear REX, a metal gear with a rail gun. liquid is another "clone" of big boss. snake kills liquid and destroys metal gear.
naomi reveals the substance she injected him with was FOXDIE, a black ops virus developed by the pentagon, honed to specific genetic frequencies. in other words, it targets only certain people, and causes their cells to undergo extreme apoptosis. in other words, it simulates a heart attack. she says she did it because the "cyborg ninja" is gray fox brought back to life with cybernetics.

2007- snake and otacon investigate a navy tanker for contraband metal gears. they find an aquatic model, metal gear RAY. ocelot (who was missing an arm from when gray fox cut it off) approaches with liquid's arm transplanted onto his own.
the nanomachines in liquid's arm take over ocelot's mind because they sense snake's genetic code nearby. liquid therefore possesses ocelot through the arm, making "Liquid Ocelot". Liquid hijacks RAY, and sinks the tanker. snake is presumed dead.
2009- the oil from the tanker's wreckage has polluted the waters around NYC. FOXHOUND operative codenamed "Raiden" is sent in to the cleanup facility, named the "Big Shell".
he is warned that terrorists have kidnapped the new armstech president, and they threaten to destroy the big shell if they don't get a ransom.

@1hitgamer Dude watching walkthrus isnt the same as playing them yourself. Watching dosnt put you into those stressful sneaking missions, figuring out what to do, Watching a main char die that you helped before. or the suprise of seeing a returning boss. Or even coming to that 1 single point in MGS3 when you have to pull the trigger and take the bosses life and find out what happened afterwards.

I can feel it... I can feel Big Boss becoming like a Darth Vader of videogames- only better. I have all four MGS games and both MG games (thank you subsistence) and I loved Big Boss. I felt like crying when he died in MGS4 but now HE'S BACK!!!! And now I have to save up for a psp after being broke from buying my ps3 XD
Omg.. From 6:08 to the very end. That was unbelievable, nice song. We all knew how much The Boss meant to Snake. Watching that was pretty heartwrenching.. Once again Hideo brings us another MGS masterpiece! My PSP broke a while back but im buying a new one just for this.. I love you Hideo Kojima!
I know, I promised myself I'd never buy one because it'd "be a waste of money" for just Portable Ops (I don't really care for playing cheaper, smaller versions of series that I love or liked like let's say Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter, I go for full games).
I'll admit PSPers, PSP has reached "PS2 quality" and its not the graphics that bite me, I simply don't like handhelds that don't want to be handhelds. For all the effort in them, why aren't PO or PW on PS2? They deserve to be.

Outer Heaven was located somewhere in Africa I believe but don't hold me to it. Keep in mind though that when MGS Peace Walker takes place Solid Snake is only 2 yrs old at most. He went to Outer Heaven and fought Big Boss in the 90's I think. So this could be an earlier Outer Heaven. I am just speculating though. We'll just have to wait til the game comes out. :( Either way it is always fun to share theories right?!
im so happy i got a psp for Christmas, i dont have a ps3 so except for Rising I can finally OWN a MGS. I played demo, I got all As on the missions except for the destroy the Tank one. And also quit whining about it just being on the PSP, Kojimi probably wanted to spice things up with the PSP

MGS4 was a good game but as an MGS vet storyline wise MGS4 was complete utter shit. A disgrace to the series. It's storyline was rushed and was no kojima's work. It would of been good like the rest of the series.
i would have to respectfully disagree that MGS4's story was shit. I do agree that the story wasn't as great as the others like Big Boss's backstory but I believe that the gameplay and the story was executed masterfully
Lol, Kojima would slap you - his favorite characters getting killed or dying, the MGS series aging not only chronologically but physically, the end of the cycle - And people still think it was crap. Face it, we all know you just weren't comfortable with "Drebin" stalking Snake and of course the Raiden haters had to jump to become "Drebin" haters for non-suspicious reasons.

He was only disappointed in the fact that he couldn't do everything he wanted to do. But he was still very proud of MGS4. MGO on the other hand was another team and Konami wanted the ID system, which they even admitted to later as being a mistake. Kojima is not disappointed in MGS4 from a design point.
Yea it's always gna sell but it should be about quality.. the quality would be so much better on ps3 / xbox. Playing it on psp is like playing on ps1... it's out of date and shit compared to what we've got now... But it's OK with realtime if they do something with selection itself.

@1hitgamer Dude watching walkthrus isnt the same as playing them yourself. Watching dosnt put you into those stressful sneaking missions, figuring out what to do, Watching a main char die that you helped before. or the suprise of seeing a returning boss. Or even coming to that 1 single point in MGS3 when you have to pull the trigger and take the bosses life and find out what happened afterwards.

@eldestsucubus thats not the shagohad its one of the new AI's being made and its different the colour and the weapons the appearance is a bit similar to the shagohad i think its called pupa-hover type and there are 2 more cocoon-tank type and chrysalis-helicopter type

The psp slim has a component cable that you connect to a flatscreen and psp go has a av cable to.
both are used to see the psp on the tv BUT when you play a game it does this widescreen thing idk how to explain.
got my cable at best buy for $20.

Because it still takes space. You got 1.8 gigs on the UMD. So that has to go for game, audio files and cut scenes. It all ads up.

Omg.. From 6:08 to the very end. That was unbelievable, nice song. We all knew how much The Boss meant to Snake. Watching that was pretty heartwrenching.. Once again Hideo brings us another MGS masterpiece! My PSP broke a while back but im buying a new one just for this.. I love you Hideo Kojima!

I know, I promised myself I'd never buy one because it'd "be a waste of money" for just Portable Ops (I don't really care for playing cheaper, smaller versions of series that I love or liked like let's say Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter, I go for full games).
I'll admit PSPers, PSP has reached "PS2 quality" and its not the graphics that bite me, I simply don't like handhelds that don't want to be handhelds. For all the effort in them, why aren't PO or PW on PS2? They deserve to be.

Outer Heaven was located somewhere in Africa I believe but don't hold me to it. Keep in mind though that when MGS Peace Walker takes place Solid Snake is only 2 yrs old at most. He went to Outer Heaven and fought Big Boss in the 90's I think. So this could be an earlier Outer Heaven. I am just speculating though. We'll just have to wait til the game comes out. :( Either way it is always fun to share theories right?!

im so happy i got a psp for Christmas, i dont have a ps3 so except for Rising I can finally OWN a MGS. I played demo, I got all As on the missions except for the destroy the Tank one. And also quit whining about it just being on the PSP, Kojimi probably wanted to spice things up with the PSP

Lol, Kojima would slap you - his favorite characters getting killed or dying, the MGS series aging not only chronologically but physically, the end of the cycle - And people still think it was crap. Face it, we all know you just weren't comfortable with "Drebin" stalking Snake and of course the Raiden haters had to jump to become "Drebin" haters for non-suspicious reasons.

He was only disappointed in the fact that he couldn't do everything he wanted to do. But he was still very proud of MGS4. MGO on the other hand was another team and Konami wanted the ID system, which they even admitted to later as being a mistake. Kojima is not disappointed in MGS4 from a design point.

Yea it's always gna sell but it should be about quality.. the quality would be so much better on ps3 / xbox. Playing it on psp is like playing on ps1... it's out of date and shit compared to what we've got now... If i'd never of played MGS4 i'd probably like it more but it's too late i've played it & been spoiled with the sick graphics and gameplay nothing short of mgs4 is ever gna compete!!!!!!

and one of the weakest entries in the series
the only chapters in that game that felt like MGS were chapter 4's metal gear boss battle

Now we need Peace Walker! Maybe he'll good enough to beat MGS 3. Who knows :) I''m very excited about that CO-OP in the game! It''s so cool to play WITH someone, not AGAINST. PW Demo is mind blowing. The only thing I didn't like is weapon and item selection. It is realtime now, so game doesn't stops to give you a time to choose what you need and what will be better to use in that or another situation. But it's OK with realtime if they do something with selection itself.

The PSP IS A real controller in and of itself :P Just not the Standard one.
