To all: martial arts in all styles works. It depends on the person's skill to use it in a right ways. I trained Kenpo, Shotokan Karate, Mui Thai, and Aikido. Really great the part of Kashima, it's not common that the aikidoka (people the practice aikido) give attention to kenjutsu and similar. I practice Katori Shinto Ryu in Palermo and i'm always really critic about people that use the sword, in this case i can say that he's great, and his movements, the cutting angles, the momentum are really perfect!

ones skills or technical ability in the techniques does not determine ones dan rank after 4th dan. 5th to 10th dan is based on what one has done for the development of aikido.

In order to receive a 10th Dan , you must be martial art's Godfather from Japan. Or Create your own version of style, just like Gracie family did with Jujitsu. There4 they have 10th dan. No other way around from a mortal outside of Japan to get near the 9th.

Doing iwama ryu the weapons style is slightly different fom Sensei Tissier's . However th ereason for training in weapons is that is should eventually widen your appreciation of very important aspects of tiajutsu eg, distance (mai) body movement (tai sabaki) and well your intentions and awareness (za zen). Your Aikido becomes much more whole and better when training in GOOD weapons. hope this helps.

if u read history of ikido u would see that aikido armed texnikes was developed with osensei only in iwama , koshimaru ueshiba has found aikikai and he developed his own texnikues , saito sensei said that osensei never tought aikiakai armed texnikues and after osenseis death saito tried to teach but not to much was interested ... so he stoped with believing that some day they will try :) (saito sometimes was teaching in hombu dojo in long times )

I am sorry psxasbut I still find that ALL branches of Aikido do not teach weapons correctly... In Aikido (and also in Iwama ryu) the Ken and Jo are used to illustrate technics or to work on the Maai... but what is done is far from reallistic: from a kenjutsu point of view for example, the wrists would be cut very often in an Aikiken application... And what we see here demonstrated by Tissier is a valid style of Kenjutsu (Kashima Shinto Ryu) that has been battle tested, not Aikiken...

o sensei during aikido foundation has founded very hard ken texniques which was for killing , he found his martial art with ken but he didin;t included taht texniques into the aikido due to its pricipal of only defending ... believe me saito sensei was not first student of sensei but longest , u se saito was living and training with o sensei from his 18 years tu 42 believe me they had strong friendship and was talking about everything :)

if u read carefully senei has found his way of killing with sword which was developed in battles too. aikidojuornal read the articles about one aikidost journalist who was traveling around the world dojos comparing aikido styles and studying its history with saito moriteru and others ..

I have to say, aikido Tissier's Sensei was first aikido i ever saw, and i really enjo his style. I especially like the way he move on tatami - i mean with great grace.I see that he seeks perfection.
