  • "WE are the illusion."

  • Minimalism at its best...

  • My favorite part @ 4:19 "...phew"

  • This kicks so much ass

  • @grundleberries what mallets are those? They sound nice.

  • @armswim10

They are Mike Balter 24R Mallets. I believe they are promoted as vibraphone mallets, but we felt they produced a great tone on the marimba for this particular piece.

  • Ik ben in de Classic Express geweest!!!! Daar heb ik dit instrument ook gehoord!!!!!!

Dat is echt geweldig om te horen!

  • 1:04 . Suddenly, green.

  • I love the sound of a marimba. It's so hearty, but mystical....

  • has a same harmony beat to the hang drum

  • About how long did it take you guys to prepare this?

  • @BlackCadillacs33

It took roughly 2 and a half months to prepare.

  • the ostinato is wrong. you have ashamed reich. how can you get such a simple thing wrong?

  • what octive marimba is the one on the right playing it llooks like 5 and a half???

  • Wonderful sound, the only thing that bugs me is the video timing is off.

  • wher did you get the music from?

  • @christuimbirek

Steve Reich, Nagoya Marimbas, purchased from steveweiss website

  • a kick evrY beat and this would be kick ass psy

  • great! sheets? scores?

    buenisimo!! tienen las partituras?

  • kick ass! I was so surprised when there wasn't an applause after the performance!

  • The beginning reminds me of the train scene in Risky Business.

  • How the hell do they remember the score!!!

  • @Pur11zz Memorization is critical when playing mallets. It's harder to play flawlessly when you're looking at music. If it's memorized, you can really focus on technique and where you're hitting the keys.

  • @adogg514 What do they memorise? Is it the actual score or the physical position of the notes. I am a piano player and I can learn a piece with the score in front of me for year and then take it away and I am lost after a few lines. I am just in awe how a repetitive piece like this can be memorised.

  • @Pur11zz its a combination of both. I also play piano, but i play mallets for fun. You focus so much on what you're doing you don't really look at the music

  • Where was this performed?

  • Nice! I love this one!

  • This is awesome. :)

  • You have just helped me select my next marimba duet :)

  • great song!!!!

  • holy crap! those huge marimbas!

  • The music is beautiful!

  • I definitely appreciate the difficulty of this piece. I've played it twice now. First time was good for the first page, then lots of wrong notes everywhere. 2nd time was yesterday one of us messed up and we ended up playing in unison half way through. It didn't fix itself until the very end.

  • Probably born in Africa but the marimba showing is DOUBLE with a box and is made it in Guatemala with HORMIGO tree.

  • Comment removed

  • sorry brother but the marimba originated in africa.

  • Hyper bien, tres bonne idee juste dommage, si je veux faire mon chieur, qu'on entende un timbre de caisse claire jute derriere tout ca

  • Hold lord you guys are amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • troppo forti!!!!!

  • I played this piece on my senior recital and I love the piece itself, but you're playing it a little fast and there's a lot of missed notes because of it. Don't sacrifice accuracy to play it impressively fast.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey man I agree 100% with you (and im playing in this video) but just so you know the music is meant to be that repetitive. It from the minimalist genre and if you dont know anything about that type of music you should look it up. It would be interesting for you.

  • It's not a song. It's a piece.

  • @zenrarity oh thx jeebuz someone who knows correct termanology, thank you!

  • pretty dang good!

  • Hmm. I always wanted to know what a marimba was, & these guys do a bang-up job playing 'em. Quite a masterpiece, fellas! Go Hilltoppers!

  • Good performance. Perhaps a little too fast though, because the listener really misses out on the subtle complexity of the piece at that tempo, and there were a few wrong notes. Overall, however, very solid.

  • Fantastic

  • great

  • heyyy dudes i love that song, but i never saw playing by 2 ppl,

i had played that by my own with 4mallets..

    Kugz and steel improv

  • Player 1 learned the beginning wrong, you're playing a wrong note in the last count of the pattern, check the music. last grouping of 16ths, starting on the "a" of 3 = ABGBA if i'm not mistaken.

  • Indeed!

  • Who cares...dot..

  • yeah thats right - that was a bit odd. good listening.

  • this is incredible, i love the marimba

my next 'thing to learn' thing on my list!

  • Part 2 skipped 16th note on 'a' of 1, measure 46.

  • That is the only one you noticed...........thank goodness. :-)

  • Well I just performed this last Wednesday, that was always the hardest measure, so I picked that out. But regardless, that is the fastest recording I've seen, so I can't criticize.

  • errr at mm.46 you were off a 16th note...

why would you leave a comment like that?

    @danz2276

  • @danz2276 i strongly dislike people like you. Of course something went wrong...it's live performance....get over it.

  • Wow most of it is in C. Thats the hardest key to play in for me. It does leave room for mistakes though.

  • Well... for me C is the easyest.. only the "white" keys..

  • Well, yeah, but I mean for quick playing. Its easier to over shoot a note in C

  • ah.. yeah.. that's right.. but you're not supposed to do that ;)

  • i didn't know my hometown had a marimba song of its own... does anybody know the history behind the naming of this song?

  • awesome piece and great performance!

  • Makes me want to go out and buy some marimba's... how did you start playing them, and how much were your first set?

    Great video!

  • Lol most people don't own their own. They are usually the schools. They start around $40,000

  • no they dont. synthetic 4 and 1/3 octave marimbas are around 5k and Full rosewood marimbas cost from 10k to 14k

  • my school has a 5-octave rosewood, 15k

  • Mine too. I always try to play it at the concerts when pit is featured. I love it.

  • Umm... somehow I got mine for $1500.

  • lol that's retarded, most marimbas start around 5k brand spanking new but prices dip much lower than that on sales and such.

  • spr bacano

  • a very thanks from guatemala we appreciate you guys playing marimbas becouse this butiful instrument is desapearing day by day god bless your talent.

  • Definatley awesome.

  • This is great. Loads of energy and flows really nicely. I think the key is not to take it too slow

  • You guys are the most awesome and a sheer inspiration!

  • Thank you for the very kind words.

  • XD the thanks are to YOU my friend. True musicians. God bless.

  • Those mallets sound so good...what kind are they?

  • I believe they are the Mike Balter 24R series. I have used them for lots of rep, like Prism, Ganda Yina, and Lo Ben Doma to name a few.

  • I liked the performance and the guy w/ beard ;)

  • I smell hormones Adriana.

  • Nice job guys! Very musically executed. A lot of performances of this piece tend to sound quite clunky but you guys really nailed it!

  • nice, but wheres the other 12 minutes???

  • wooops, im thinking of six marimbas...you can delete it if ya want

  • is the piece that you are referring to actually called six marimbas or does it have a different title?

  • yeah, its called six marimbas, its another reich piece. it was orignally written for 6 piano, but was transcribed for 6 marimbas. if you send me your email address i could send the audio to you.

  • marvelous! 5 stars

  • I'm workin' on a video using Reich compositions , and these ones posted are great... thanks for sharing!

  • AWESOME!!! BEST IN THE WORLD!!!

  • great!

  • Hey,

Heard this piece in music and fell in love with it. Thanks for posting!

  • reich did it already..

  • what? din't quite catch that.

  • Reich did it? Reich composed it, monkey.

  • Awesome. I loved how you guys were completely locked in. If you so desire, I have a version of this piece up as well. Check it out.

  • Very nice, gents. I show your performance in my music classes!

  • Thank you. I am glad we could help!

  • Hey all who is in my class doing this homework! (its chris) Grudnleberries how does it feel to have your video featured in education in England ?? lol hope you don't mind the English :p

Great video and great piece thanks

    Veyron

  • It's totally wicked. I've been telling my professors and they think its awesome too. Thanks for commenting and I hope the homework goes well!

    p.s.

Tell your teacher I said thanks for helping to get my video lots of views.

  • :p I'll tell him that. Yeah homework went well, basically just commenting on structure and stuff, so wasn't terribly difficult. We are learning about minimalism and its pioneers, and Reich is someone we have to research and my teacher recommended this video to watch to get a good idea of Reich and minimalism. Thanks again :P

    Veyron

  • Oh yeah, good video ;)

  • Also known as the study of 'Minimalist' music.. :/

  • We're just doing hw on describing the performance, and structure, etc.

  • Heya ive gt 2 do it 4 homewrk 2 lol!!

    Well done :D

btw anyone reading this in my class hello xD

  • Wow. That's pretty cool that my video is being used for homework assignments. What kind of homework?

  • A boring 1 LOL! We have 2 write about wat instruments and how it develops and stuff :( cool tune thou. Hi to anyone out there in my class too

  • well its music (obviously) and we're studying Reich and his pieces and gradual changes

  • what kind of mallets are you guys using?

  • They are the Mike Balter 24R. Thanks for watching.

  • does anyone know who publishes this piece? I'm looking to perform it next year, but I don't know where I can find it.

  • Chemistry. a ductile, bluish-white metallic element: used in making galvanized iron, brass, and other alloys, and as an element in voltaic cells

  • what the hell are you talking about?

  • HAHAHA srry, I was going to copy a question that I previously posted (about marimbas, xylophones and percussion). However I accedentaly copied a portion of my science project and posted the comment lol srry about that.

  • thats all right was just a little bit confused. hope you enjoyed the performance.

  • Heh sweet :P If I had the patience I would learn marimba :P

    -Dusty

  • nice! two personal aspects: the tempo is a little to fast, it is much more risky and i guess theres is no need to be played that fast. Also the begining you could bring out the marimba 2 a little more. But really, very nice!

  • Why aren't you wearin shoes, you know your feet stink, haha j/p

    Dillard

  • i guess this is kinda cool chris.:-p

    lol

    -newman

  • Chris that is crazy. 5 satrs of course. -(your lil bass buddy)

  • Own.

  • High tempo but very nice

  • real good guys.

it would be cool if you could bring out marimba two's part in the intro, though. just a personal thing i guess.

    sweet job!

  • this actually sounds like the real recording. Superb!

  • fan-freakin-tastic!

  • ...and wow that is the fastest ive ever seen a vibraphone bein set up ever!

  • this is hard to play together at the suggested 96 - 104 and you went above that...and with two mallets....fair play

  • This is excellent, thanks for uploading.

  • Thank you.
