A lot of people fail to realize that Aretha's music is very much attached to the civil rights movement. They go hand in hand......i remember as a little boy how you couldn't go a day without her palying on somebody's record player or a radio station. This sister is deeply apart of where we came from as people. She helped define and shape our sound and culture. I love this sister personally. She also gave alot of money to the civil rights leaders to help them travel and eat while on the road.
First heared as a little kid just as the 1967 riots of Detroit were breaking out corner 15th and Forest. Quite a tramatic time for the city but Aretha's music motivated us and helped us hold it together.

woah now THAT'S singing....goooooo aretha , Queen of R&B / Soul . The princesses of R&B can only come a poor 2nd , and have to wear bikins & shake their butts to get a tiny percentage of the attention that Aretha got by simply singing !......
This tune hit my heart when I was a boy of 12, now I'm 57 and it still does - never ends doing it....Which song of today can be heard more than 35 years later like that stuff and still be wanted without any interruption in loving it? Music from it's best - never left me, stand tune to me in every way. Let me cry and let me be glad - I'm a man, white and not ashamed for being thankful for what I've got from you, black Americans.Save your heritage like treasure - my kids love it too...
I feel that this performance of this song is one of the most iconic moments in music history. When you see documentaires about the great artists of the last century, usually they'll show this clip of Aretha right next to the Stones & Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. Until this concert, a lot of people had heard her but had never really seen her. And this performance made her a legend in her own time. Ive said before, NO ONE had ever used their voice the way she uses hers, right here.
her hometown actually did declare it as one the first time i heard this song it gave me chills i was a teenager riding in the car with my mom and it blew me away
The first time she sings "never" blows my mind. She has the greatest voice of all time and her phrasing and the way she sings behind the beat here are phenomenal.
I thnk of two singers at that time, who left the kind of impression on you, after listening to them, just once...and they would be Aretha and James Brown. Two giants...
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEYONCE AND ALL THESE NEW ARTIST CAN SIT AND TAKE NOTE.. no need for booty poppen if you have talent like this! sing it girl
As much as I would like to agree with this statement, that is not really the case in today's media. I mean there are people like Adele who are fabulous exceptions to this rule but because of things like MTV where image has become everything, it's now all about your video and who's showing more and everything. Phenomenal people like Mama Cass and Janis would be dismissed in a media frenzy such as today's modern one. One's "too fat" the other not really attractive. To me they always rock though
@babygirl91580 Beyonce couldnt clean Aretha's panties with her voice. Like all other "singers" Beyonce is a studio-produced package who has to be overdubbed because of a lack of quality in her voice. Aretha is the voice of the SOUL GODDESS.
@franklinrocks1 i must agree i was born in 1980 so this was well b4 my time, but i remember singing this song with my grandma, she would be cooken in the kitchen, and swaying to this song. so ive always known good music :)
Unfortunately, this concert is probably better listened to than watched. Given today's incredibly superficial, fickle market, voices such as Aretha's would be dismissed long before anyone had a chance to appreciate her incredible talent. Sadly, today's listeners are more concerned with appearance and flash than ability. If you want to be a real singer, Aretha is required listening. But if you want to see how to sell a song and keep an audience today, yet have no talent, go watch Lady Gaga.
Lady GaGa is actually really talented, just because she does her own thing doesn't necessarily mean she has no talent.. I'm not a lady gaga defender, nor do I really like the stuff she does but I have heard her acoustic sessions and wow. very interesting
Lady Gaga is among the least talented performers of all time. She would not stand up against Aretha Franklin at all. There are no special effects here. No extravagant, self-indulgent stage productions. This is because it didn't exist at the time. In this day and age, even an acoustic performance is hardly credible, there are so many ways to doctor things up and cover up major flaws with software. But these performances by Aretha are pure demonstrations of talent.
eckh. lady gaga? that's like comparing the jonas brothers to led zeppelin.
if she's really as talented as you claim she is, then why does she have to be half naked in almost every video and performance? i can't help but believe that sex is her only real marketable trait.
I've got to disagree with you. Though yes Lady Gaga is most notable for her attire and antics there is no denying that she is a singer. However, her voice is masked behind heavily overproduced material that shades her natural talent. I'm not even a fan but I have heard her voice without the synthesizers and she's damn pretty talented.
Though I still don't understand why people are bringing up Lady Gaga in an Aretha video.. Did she do a cover or something?
Lada Gaga does have a good voice. A great voice? No. But she's better than other current "singers." She depends too much on shock value. Perhaps that's what makes her "famous."
Yeah, I figured what you meant. I think if someone recognizes something you've done enough to want to re-record their own version, you'd HAVE to be flattered, unless it sucks. I've heard cover versions of Black Sabbath songs off the NIB Tribute albums I wish had never existed.
uhhhhhh Why would Aerosmith sing this song...Sorry but this song was specifically written for her in 1968...it wouldnt even make since for them to even touch it....
"Honkin' On Bobo" has been out for 5 years now, and you've never heard it? The only difference is they changed "man" to "girl", but it didn't change the essence of the song at all. I like their spin on it, they did it with respect and integrity intact. The question I have is if Aretha herself has heard it and what SHE thinks of it, because as the original artist (though she didn't WRITE it, not that that is important), her opinion is the only one that matters anyway.
Oh yeah, I do know that she has much more than the songs I mentioned. I was referring to the ones you hear in movies, TV shows, and the like. That's what I meant.
Funny thing is, I had no idea Aretha ever sang this. All you ever hear about her career more than anything is "Respect" or "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", you know what I mean? You hear those songs EVERYWHERE! I figured when I got the "Bobo" CD that it must've been an old blues standard, like most of the songs they recorded were.
Queen! this just puts all these pop stars today to shame. For god sake just get up there and sing, what a voice I mean she almost makes it look easy but I guess that's just natural talent :)
I'm glad to know, finally, where this concert actually took place at. I know this was from Aretha's European tour from early 1968, but didn't know it was in Sweden. These performances from Sweden were the Queen's greatest of the decade of the 1960's.
THIS comes closest to showing what a force Aretha was in her prime. The "Respect" videos on here are mostly overdone and/or worked to death. Here she is feeling it and, man, it sounds amazing!
I never really knew the music of aretha but since my mom have been watching it on youtube for the weekends i cannot express howmuch i am impressed by this woman and this womans music!!!

She probably can't sing a hundredth as well as Aretha Franklin, learnt a few basic dance choreographies, and the rest of the time she's half nude.
