These guys are called the Fathers of Melodic Death Metal for a reason. Between Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, In Flames, and Eucharist, you're looking at what many people consider the core of the famous Gothenburg Sound (unless you wanna include Dissection, Sentenced, and old Dismember in there as well? There's been debate on that one for some time...). Either way, DT's been amazing since their Skydancer album back in '93 (when I believe the current vocalist for In Flames was the DT vocalist.)

I will always value a strong writer over a great vocalist and Scar Sym are no exception, besides like you said the vocalists will (and have been) improve. Most bands have a lackluster album when they go through a lineup change, it's basically an expected 'trial' period. To judge a band on the album that comes right after a new lineup just demonstrates a lack of knowledge towards how writing music works, it's ridiculous.
