My late father used to use rand mcNally back in the 70's but thank god for gp's and new technologies we have now to keep you touch with your loved one's, me i would want to broadcast my travel's on the net over ustream as soon as i get out of c.b/base station range.
was looking for aviation gps tutorial, interestingly enough i noticed that your odometer was reading 1111 during first 30 seconds of this video. Reminds of George Noory and Coast radio show Make a wish, good luck and happy trucking friends. :)
garmin nuvi 465t only gps that is resgistered with the (ntts) national truck and trailer services.......its great check it out if your planning to get a truck gps....and with one push of the button it turns into a car gps as well
i was thinking of making a gps with an option of choosing the type of vehicle you are driving once... never got around to programming it... just a bit too late
hey, i have a Garmin (they are the bet in GPS. they even do GPS in planes) Road pilot or something like than... its big because its got a lot of memory and really advanced. anyway, i dont know if all gps' do this, but on mine, you can go into the settings and choose what type of vehicle you are driving. semi-truck included. now, what i think would happen is it shifts the routes for semi truck friendsly roads, or roads with weight restriction semi's fit. thought id share it with ya:) great vids
well if you want a GPS for truckers i have the solution for u. i have found one that is called teletype 7100 or different models but they are specifically designed for truckers, rv's, buses.
i have a friend that has one and i got to tell you it is well worth your money if ur a trucker. so go and check it out but keep in mind u want the one that say made for trucking ok.
hey did you mean softwares of Gps mean for laptops. that would be cool.. do u have nay idea where i can get that or co`s that manufacture them... Tashi Delek!!!
tashi delek!!! great tutorial.. i was wandering why not use the GPS meant for trucking rather than one meant for regular four wheeler. Wouldnt it save time and make yourself feel more confident as to where you are heading.
I think that sat nav gps should be used as a reference not gospel. Maps are best as well as experiance. But I live in Spain and you can't find town maps well good ones anyway. Map books are best.
I have the garmin c330 and i save all my customers locations. But i tell you that this device has made me so much money it paid for itself in less than two weeks. I wouldn't live without it and i don't see how there is a truck driver out there who doesn't have one. Take's all the guesswork out of it.
It doesn't do great once you are seriously downtown in cities. Low overpasses.
also, some people in cars or persa 4 wheelers dont know how to read maps, they dont know how to count the miles on the map and exits, rest areas, and what mile marker they will be crossing state lines.
Garmins (particularly the 2730, 2820, 7200 & 7500) have a truck setting that will (for the most part) keep you out of trouble. I bought one two months ago and I have found it accurate for low bridges and weight restricted roads but needs some work for local truck restricted routes. You will still need your Rand-McNally just in case
I use Co-Pilot Truck on my laptop and it's pretty damn sweet. I suggest writing your route down before running in case it loses sync with the sat, which it will then tell you to go anywhere but the right way.
When you miss a turn or get lost, use common sense when it tells you to turn somewhere because it seems to lose it's mind when you get off route.
Over here I have the 920 (so I can listen to your podcast of course) Due to alot of weight and height restrictions I always use the satnav in conjunction with a map and use the itinerary's to plan a trip so I can add waypoints so I know it will take me the way I wanted on the map. If it locks up again stick a pin in the hole at the bottom and hold down the power button. It should re-boot then. I did a vid with some of the fun voices if you get a chance to check it out. Stay safe Sean....
After watching i decided to do some research for a gps with truck routes. i found one by teletype(.com) were you can input factors such as weight, height, width and Hazardous number. i thought you might be interested. although its rather Pricey i think it would be well worth it
Using both the GPS and map book makes the GPS almost useless but being reminded of turns is pretty handy...I've missed turns and exits because my mind was somewhere else :D
They really need to make a truck friendly model my company gave me a garmin to use to find 30 stops around the suburbs of NYC. Had more trouble then ive ever had on the road low bridges and park way dont work they suck
What I like most about this video was the positive comment you made about your current company at the beginning. I pray they continue to treat you well.
hey Sean. Nice work on th GPS. You were only a 45 min drive from me here in Ottawa. If your ever make it out here let me know. Keep up the good work. If you have sometime when you do another tutorial can you show the walk around. what you have to look for?
I got a Garmin Street Pilot C550, had it for a while now and I like it. Never had any problems with it and was pretty accurate. I think Garmin's better, just my opinion.
yeah got the same problem in the UK, quite often residents complain about artic's going through their village because the sat nav's don't cover for large vehicles, it only covers the quickest route type of thing.
so far they have taken it to the UK Government to get the sat nav's changed to allow for truck drivers. as of yet, haven't heard anymore since. so I decided to stay away from sat nav's until they cover size, weight, and height restrictions.
GPS isnt really better than a map if you read what silvertondevil12 put you will see my point that kind of stuff happens all the time a GPS telling you to go the wrong way.
Awesome vid Sean.. very imformative, I have a newer garmin and it doesn't have any programmed truck routes or anything of the sort. I live about 15 mins east of perth ontario.. seems weird considering you live all the way out in B.C. lol. I'm sure hwy.7 seemed rather tame compared to #5 where you're from.. out here hwy7 is as bad as it gets ahah
very nice..

Talking about weight restrictions, I took my mom to work, and their parking garage has a weight limit of 5,000 LBS, my truck weights 7,300...

If you just research it more, there are plenty of Truck only GPS out there! Maps are good for back ups. Combination of both, and you can't go wrong.

Garmin Streetpilot 2820 is a good for trucker you can set it up for what you driving truck, car, motorcycle! etc it'll give you a trucker route!!!
rdloco 3 years ago
Great stuff, Sean.
Rand McNally, Gousha and Thomas Bros. were all I ever used back in the day. (I was forced into retirement back in 2000.)
Payphone calls to dispatch and you were on your own.
Anyway, I suppose GPS has come of age.
There are several tools I would like to add, if you haven't heard of them,
Keywords:
gmaps-pedometer and google earth 4.3
And with the iPhone you can call, surf the net, email and take pictures.. ;>)
Wow, how times have changed in the last twenty years.
