Dangerous? The top speed recorded at this event was 212 mph by the Budweiser boat, most of them cruised between 95 and 140+ mph. Five different classes, so they raced by class/speed. I think there is 150 meters between this pier and the island, narrowest part of the race course.

They weren't going the wrong way, it's a two way course between the beach and the island.
