  • this kid is gonna be famous someday

  • I don't know why but he reminds me of Tom Hanks in this video sssooooo much!

  • Man I used to go to Blockbuster all the time back in the day. Imagine seeing some dude playing guitar there when picking out a video, and then years later your like, wtf...that was Dave Matthews

  • this was made on my bday!

  • this whas made on my bday!

  • i love the one dude hating on dave. where's the dude now???

  • @greg0716 love it!

  • Great !

  • Copyright!

  • this is when i first fell in love

  • Aww he's so cute! That shirt is falling off of him hahaha

  • his fingers resemble a giant spider straddling the neck of the guitar which then results in the guitar screaming out greatness without any pain but rather a calm euphoric titillation of enjoyment

  • Comment removed

  • dude shut the fuck up and listen to greatness! people are so fucking disrespectful!

  • he looks stoned ^^

  • @muzzletov he always is

  • he was so thin..but sexy...! lol that's what i tell people when they tell me about my skinniness.. !!!! oh yeah!

  • love how you can actua;;y talk to him back then now he cant be touched.. man he was good

  • @drkarate1 he was good? I'm pretty sure he still is great and pumping out awesome music..

  • @trojanguy85

idiot savant without the idiot part..

  • i think when i dont have enough of something that i would have the passionate words to express what i want. sucks to be upper middle classish. like a misc existence. if i dont need anything what could i express in song? expression in a song is normally something that is different from the position that i am, correct?

  • @108Dax that sucks if you cant express yourself unless you want something....

  • @108Dax shut up pussy

  • @PunchYouInTheFace42 get a life fag

  • amazing. i wish i had the passion in my words.

  • the difference between the crowed when this songs being played in 1994 and when its played in 2010 is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. haha

  • i wasnt even born yet. wowowow.

  • @nomad2894 same here man, its crazy to think about

  • even his fingers don't know how they do that.

  • ..young dave. befor they were stars

  • Comment removed

  • good god, he's so young

  • I was 1 year old when this video was shot. I just went to my first concert, a DMB show, a month ago. and they are even better today, that says something...

  • And I bet at least half of the crowd bought his CD a month and a half later...

  • its awesome how the same songs he played before he was big are some of the best ones to hear live now. if only that place, those people knew what come of him

  • i love how even though the crowd was super disrespectful to him and talked the whle time he played, he stood up there and played his ass off and smiled the entire time (:

  • STFU CROWD .... IM TRYING TO LISTEN TO GOD!!!!

  • 16 years later and he still moves his left leg the same way haha

  • Im always amazed with how weird of guitar Dave plays. I have rarely ever seen somebody do such funky finger movements as him. Perhaps that's why nobody makes music like him/as good as him.

  • Its so creepy he looks just like my friends ex boyfriend. but his name was sean. could be twins though wonder if sean will look like dave does now in 10 or so years.

  • lol he went from that to a stadium with 70,000 people... i would love to be those people

  • what kind of guitar is he using?

  • right there in the presence of a living music legend and thos fucktard talking had no clue what they where witnessing i feel bad for them bet they wish they could take THAT back lol

  • dave does look a little bit like forrest gump...

  • @olho seeing the world through the eyes of Dave Matthews

  • Voices of a thousand angels wouldn't sound as sweet

  • this was the first dave matthews song i learned, it's pretty easy to learn===not to write. chill out

  • You wanna know what I LOVE about this video! Well good cause I'll tell you if you keep reading. As we all know the crowd are being a bunch of assclowns but check out 2:05. Dave is just in his zone and lovin the music. F*** those morons in the crownd. He knows what sounds good.

  • @D3f11 lol i was so drunk when i wrote that last one..

  • my dude carter makes an appearance at the end. probably the only one to show him real gratitude with the high five. crowds like this make the performer feel like a complete ass for strutting their stuff, working hard so a crowd can talk through his hard work...

  • It would be so awesome if "the crowd" realized they were in the presence of a lyrical genius. If they could just SHUT THE F UP for a min. I almost cant even believe they arent star struck, in awe and just appreciative of the fact that DM would grace their hick town mall with his time. DA... Anyway DM rocks, rolls and cheers the saddest souls... GOD BLESS DM

  • RCA released Under the Table in 9/94....within 12 months, 1 million sold, first single-What Would You Say.

  • are they not plasmas on the wall behind him?? this is 16 years ago??!!

  • Is this Tripping Billes or whom?

  • @kissmusiclover are you serious?

  • i was born on this day - august 10 1994

  • he is a genius

  • @wanted: If this was 16 years ago, then he is 25. :-) So young! He was born Jan 9, 1969.

  • @Nichell122

he was born in 67, he was acutally 27.

though he could have easily passed for 21-24

  • does anyone know how old he is in this video??? please comment if you know!

  • @xxwantedxx 1994 Oct

  • WOW!!!, just wow!!!, Just like RewUnit said it, IF THEY ONLY KNEW. JUST AN AMAZING SET OF VIDS FROM HIS EARLIER YEARS!!!!

  • wat the fuck is wrong with the crowds in every video i have seen hes playing like a champ and sounds beautifully and there always obnoxious as fuck

  • For all of the confused people, RewUnit was implying "if that crowd only knew" that he would be as famous as he is now. And no, he wasn't nearly as famous as he is now in 1994.

  • I think you guys need to shut up and stop arguing. Just enjoy the fideo and move on. I swear there are so many of you who'd rather come on here and bitch at each other instead of enjoy the music. Geez.....

  • I think all of you need to stop arguing and enjoy the video.

  • the best thing about this is you actually see his knees, when does that happen?

  • this was on my birthday, dave rules!

  • yeah!!! who woulda thought he'd go to being a whore for Obama????

  • little did the people in this crowd know, they were watching a legend.

  • I shot this video. Long long ago... Surprised to see it get online. My buddy Chris and I had 2 of the 3 copies. We passed the 3rd to Dave onstage that night at the New Daisy Theater. This was at the Blockbuster Music at the corner of Poplar and Highland in Memphis, TN. Good times.... glad everyone enjoys.

  • Love the song, and the Forest Gump hair cut!

  • How old was he here? He was is so cute.

  • @DaveMatthewsBandFan9 he was "23 and so tired of life"

  • genius

  • Where is this? In a random mall or something?

  • He has amazing finger control. Just amazing.

  • @thedougmasterflex That's what she said

  • @jamesbuddy63 nice

  • Yes thanks for posting this! Great stuff!

  • dave is awesome. what a great song writer

  • I can't get over this. 27 years old. how amazing!

  • Thanks for posting this!!!

  • wanna punch those f idiots whos talkin while his playin

  • @itai1987 damn right, morons can't appreciate brilliant music...

  • Look at his left arm - amazing!

  • anyone know wat guitar this is for sure?

  • took about 5 seconds for people to shut the hell up once he got it goin.

  • I love it because the audience is talking. haha damn.. He's amazing.

  • Awesome!

Pity you didn't film the part where he wipes his face with his shirt. xD

  • so young in this..

  • Thanks for posting this and for your efforts to make the viewing easier.

  • Lol if that crowd only new....

  • Yeaa plp are to busy talking instead of listening to one of the worlds greates artist. :)

  • @RewUnit haha my brother said the same thing.

  • @RewUnit if they only knew what?? Dave had already released UnderThe Table and Dreaming at this point in `94,,his 3rd record ...if they only knew what??

  • Under the Table and Dreaming was released 9/27/94, and month and a half AFTER this recording. Further more, just because the album was release in (around) the time of the recording, doesn't mean it had gained popularity yet. These audience members, or at least a good chunk of them, did not know who they were listening to. otherwise, they would have shut their damn mouths... sort of like how you should....

  • @NicGaviskey dont get smart,it doesnt suit you. You are making an assumption as much as I am,its a record store in a mall, couldve been half the people dont even know who Dave is ,they just walked by and heard some guy was doin` a performance. Now dont be a child, dont get personal evry time you see a comment you dont agree with,,, bye scooter

  • @PAULOcbi How Ironic, you trying to tell someone else "not to get smart". You obviously tried to make others feel stupid for saying "if only the crowd new" with your comments. The reality is that you were WRONG. The album had not been officially released yet, so you should apologize to RewUnit for trying to make he/she look bad. Just admit you were wrong and move on.

  • @NicGaviskey why do assholes like you have to get personal? dont you have 'friends' to do your venting on,your obviously not a DMB fan ,Dave had been playing ALL the songs fromUTTAD for years b4 the album, and had already released 2 albums b4 UTTAD so you are wrongo, buddy boy

  • @RewUnit That the dude was destined to be a toolbag with what seems to be tourettes?

  • @memphetic You were destined to be a toolbag

  • @RewUnit BURNNNED MEEEEEEE!!!!

  • @RewUnit if *he* only knew...

  • i love how busy his fingers were throughout the song but still sing with so much heartfelt emotion. he is truly a talented man.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks Dave,,,I have only started to enjoy your stuff,,,and I am blown away,,Thank again Sir,,

  • KIT KAT JAM YEA

  • You can see on this guy all the talent spitting out in all of his songs.. And he became better day by day with more experience, In my opinion, one of the most beutiful voices in the world with a unique taste to play his music. One day he'll become a legend.

  • He already is.

  • I mean he can't be a legend now because he's still alive duh.

  • Thanks Duh.. Someone can still be a legend.. Bob Dylan??? Dont give me your highschool attitude, thanks. DUH

  • I'm sorry if I sounded rude but but I think a legend is something you cant see anymore but you can hear a story of it from many people, now a days you can watch videos, my son will know about michael jackson because of them for example, that was my point, I apologize again, peace.

  • Apology accepted.. And I know what your saying.. A legend is that but can also be someone who has done so much already. Michael Jacson was already a legend even before he died. Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Bono.. I guess its just different ways at looking at things.. Take care.. Peace.

  • Dear Dr Gron and Justingarman, I just wanted to congratulate you both on being so civil and kind in this exchange. The anonymity of the internet breeds such venomous interaction is is incredibly freshing to see people treat each other with respect...peace indeed

  • Dave Matthews voice although very unique is actually so incredible. The guy sings such difficult songs with all kinds of notes and he never fucks up. Also his guitar peices are always very complex especially for a lead singer. So while singing perfectly he has to play the lead guitar parts. His role as a front man is huge. Some lead singers just stand there and sing not playing an instrument, this guy does in it all writes, sings, dances, plays guitar and in stand up he played piano.

  • i love his eyebrow...*melts*

  • wow ..look at those shorts?..haha we loved ya then DAve and we love ya now...

He realy was a tireless self promotor....he did lots of these small gigis...record store promos etc......you don't see this anymore?

  • the best part of the video is how people were talking for the first minute or so and then realized how good this guy is and it was total silence until he finished the song

  • gosh he was totally just a kid! =)

    he's crazy :D

  • that was only about 13 days after the release of UTTAD

  • i mean this is just so great

  • i like the way his fingers move like an alien

  • his face while he plays guitar is totally priceless

  • great vid.

  • Im blown away how his vocals sounds pretty much identical these days still...

  • how close were u 2 him?

  • OMG was that a mall . Something i'm too proud to do. Love ya dave.

  • dude can play a guitar that's for damn sure

  • this is my absolute favorite song...especially after watching this...he's just so amazing

  • Being a guitar player, and 34 DMB shows later, I still cant get over how his fingers just move around so effortlessly... it is so impressive. I love seeing him in raw form like this, really puts it into perspective.

  • your amazing dave. thanks for all your years of music :)

  • he looks really skinny

  • I want to drop kick the people who are talkng while he is trying to perform.

  • I NO LIKE stfu

if i was dave id just peace

    "i dont gotta be here"

  • in their defense he wasn't famous yet...

  • Hehe yea I mean look at him, its 1994, he's in a mall, pwning. But no one knows who he is, he hasn't even done his first Saturday Night Live performance yet.

  • incredible. i love watching these videos from a long time ago. he is just an amazing musician.

  • He was just a baby back then. If those people in the crowd would have known what a brilliant artist he was I bet they would have STFU then!

  • Ha ha. I totally agree. It sounds weird/out of place to hear people talking during the performance. He was just as talented then as he is now. Its great to hear how true the final recording stayed to this.

  • It's amazing how he totally tuned out the fact that the audience wasn't respecting his talent and performed as though the world was listening... NOW the world IS listening. Many artists may have been discouraged. I'm thankful Dave Matthews wasn't. What a gift :O) AWESOME VIDEO!

  • I wish people in crowd would stfu already.

  • This is just beautiful. You can tell how emotionally connected he is to what he writes. Honestly, when I hear him sing this song, I am overwhelmed with emotion.

  • FIRST!!!

  • Hahahaha, 4:33

  • y did he do that lol

  • there was feedback

  • WOW! Where was this? A young Dave with no band, no great big stage and no CARTER? How I would kill to have witnessed this! Those talking bozos in the background must feel like idiots now that Dave is huge famous.

  • hahaha

smile at 2:03 is priceless! xD

  • Haha he does look like forest gump!

    But he's a freakin genius.

  • Forrest Gump on Guitar

  • i want that guitar so bad

  • i love how at about 2:00 he looks up like he wants to be like YEAH! but just looks right back down.

  • seriously i want to strangle all those mfers talking thru this performance. they had no idea they were in the presence of a musical genius.

  • agreed

  • I would be in stunned silence if i was in the place of those annoying talking bitches

  • that's completely normal... you just gotta deal with it in a small venue

  • I couldnt say it any better. They have no idea how lucky they are to be witnessing a legend in the making.

  • this is probably right around when he started singing the "satellite" lyrics to this song. When he originally wrote it, it was called "after her" and had completly different lyrics. Great video. the people in the crowd have no idea theyre witnessing one of the greatest song writers of our generation.

  • STFU you idiots. People don't know how to listen, it's all me me me me, I gotta talk! listen to ME!!!! PS - he truly was quite the fashion plate in those days... nice threads, Dave!

  • why the fuck is everyone talking over him

  • i dunno but its gay

  • man he looks young

  • this is awesome i live like 3 mins from this place. its actually spin street music now tho

  • I shot this video back in the day at the Blockbuster Music on Popar & Highland in Memphis, TN. Nice to see some of it is still out there. I still have the original master tape. This is pretty crappy quality compared to the original. :)

In the full version you'll hear me yell "I'll back you up" to dave.. (he played it) Played that tune for my GF at the time who he was mackin on after this show.

VERY laid back guy.... there were maybe 30 people there.. he was nobody at the time.

  • haha that's awesome... if anyone macked on my GF, I would want it to be Dave

  • holy fuck, i used to live in memphis. I can't believe he played at that blockbuster- crazy.

  • listen to all of the talking in the background, thats so rude! Dave matthews is up there for crying out loud. Respect the legend.

  • Who woulda thought Dave would go from this to selling out arenas. The cool part is, nothing changed. People just realized his talent, along with the rest of the band of course. But he can still hold his own with just an acoustic guitar. He's one of the few people in the music industry nowadays that actually leaves me speechless with how much talent he has.

  • That is definitely one of the TRUEST statements ever!!!

  • God he sounds exactly the same!! that's why he is so awesome.. and true fans know EVERY version of all of his songs.. He rocks now and then
