Just wanted to confirm that the fingering is the same as for the c pentatonic? Looks like he is playing something different. I can do it with the 32 121 32 121 with 1 on Bb, but the transition to 3 is tuff off the Bb?
@boldstrummer I understand where you're coming from, but anyone ready to make a serious attempt at Tatum style playing can pick this up very quickly. The objective of this video rhythmic displacement, so the tempo is a non-factor. Not a scales or fingering tutorial.
Right hand notes are a decending D pent. scale. F-D-C-A-G. I don't know if it gets any simpler than this.
And I'm glad to see some more advanced piano material on youtube.
love it. In the right hand- Going up: D/Eb/E/F Then Going Down (Starting on the F you just played) F/D/C/Bb/G repeating down. At least that's what I'm hearing. (There was a comment about slowing it down so I just wanted to post this for those that wanted it slower). If it needs correction, please feel free to say so.
Thank you this guy for having made these videos and thank you person who posted them on youtube.
this is amazing along with all the other videos.
as for it being a lesson, i think it's more of a lesson intended for people who know their way around a piano pretty well, so it would be less daunting for them and overwhelming is part of why it's so awesome i find.
there are video players like kmplayer and audio players also that allow you to slow down tempo if you want.
I have added some other Dick Hyman jazz-videos, such as jazz lessons for Jelly Roll Morton, Ragtime To Stride, Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Erroll Garner.
I think these are extracks from the pro version of "Dick Hyman's Century Of Jazz Piano", a CD-ROM playable on computer and interactive with any keyboard or Yamaha Disclavier. Contains Dick Hyman performances of 103 tunes in over 60 historic styles, with videos, MIDI Studio, graphics, bios, video lessons, downloadable music, etc.

Too bad he can't slow it down.
If this is supposed to be a lesson
I would be overwhelmed if I was a student.

It's not "displace", it's "descending"

Forget it.

it's 'displaced' pal.
'Decending' refers to the running down of the scale, 'displaced' is to start the rund down on different beats of the bar.

I realized that 9 months ago, which is why I posted "Forget it".
