  • If you're considering Carbonite, don't! I had been a customer of Carbonite for years. My PC had a failure and the system was rolled back to an earlier date. I go to Carbonite and they can't provide my data. When Carbonite does a backup they write a file to the PC that they're backing up and then they use that file to restore the system. Long story short, I lost family pictures, videos, tax information, work and personal files. I was promised numerous callbacks from engineering that never came.

if i back up all my files onto the spare drive i have, and format

will that format my c:/ drive? or both drives?

beacsue i want to format my c drive then just put everything back on..

    ty rsvp

  • @nptw0er yes you can do that, because your other drive is on D:\ for example. So as long as you dont touch the D:\ or as long as you dont accidently wipte out the entire drive and specify only the C:\ half then the D:\ remains. Be careful

  • wen i click next after i put in the name and dvd drive it says unable to use that filename make sure you are using a valid path and have access... please help (i am a administrator on this computer incase that has anything to do with the access thing)

  • that happened to me too. i copied it to my documents then from my documents i copied it to my disc...

  • By back up system files, as u said registry etc, do we back up installed programs also?

  • I think its better to make back ups every week, instead letting system restore to take your HDD memory, and only way to clear that memory is format whole HDD... im talking abt 10gb of system restore etc.. i seen that

  • so if i do this it will back up my operating system? i want to format my hard drive so will my os be safe when i do that?

  • Mine is different and fails no matter what i do. Lol.

  • Cool video man I gonna do that =)

  • should you backup your system when installing xp service pack 2

  • thanx

schedule allows you to keep your back up current like once a week or month.

  • I don't understand what the schedule does.

Do you backup the system state or do you restore the system the day you have selected?

  • does this work for vista???

  • nope

  • i wish i would've done this 2 years ago before i started messing with the windows folder. now every time i boot it up i dont know if i can view my files :( but the good thing is to fix that i just need to restart my PC. :)

  • what i've to do if i don't have backup like backup don't go

  • Or you can use Partimage to create an image of your partitions, or Clonezilla for an image of your entire disk.

  • 1:05 BACK THE F:/ UP!!...

  • lol

  • Cool cursor!

Can you plz tell me how to get it, thxs

  • could this be used to prepare for harddrive failure?

  • Yes, Backup everything, like Music, a list of programs you had(If you want to), Videos, Pictures, anything important.

  • too late now, i got the trojan virus so i have to reformat it anyways

  • hello, gr8 vid mate

after backing up, how to i go about restoring the back up.

forgot to mention i'm a novice at using computers

  • you just double click the bkf file you created

  • Whats that Theme you use?

    Whats the name of it?

  • Its the Zune theme, check out my webstie for the links to downloading it.

  • i i cant even restore my computer helllppppppp

  • i cant back up my files i followed all this step but when i chose where to save the files it says

"the backup life name could not be used"

    "D.\windows...bkf"

please ensure is a valid path and that u have sufficient access..

im running windows xp 64 bit.. is thene a way to fix ... thx

  • So..can this restore anything, say like...getting rid of an MSblaster virus?

  • can it back up my os?

  • Not really, it can backup what ever you specify but no so you can re-install the OS, just a backup of your files incase you need to restore them.

  • wow tht was fast. =)

Thanks for the help. The reason Y i wanna back up my os case I dun wanna reinstall my os every time when i messed up my computer.

well actually my sis got norton ghost V14 in her computer. so the Ntbackup it's just the same as ghost, but free?

  • i have always used system restore, creating restore points. but this is much better, a piece of mind, thank you.

  • ok, great. tha was just what i was looking for aster i lost lots of coursework recently. however i hvave windows xp home edition and can not acess that window. is there any way it can be installed. or can you recomend another program that does the same.

    Thanks :)

  • The window you're looking for can be installed afterwards on XP Home. Browse your harddisk or XP CD for a file called "NTBACKUP.MSI" and double-click to perform the installation.

    Had the same problem like you, now backing up onto a network attached storage! Hope I could help. ;-}

  • I don't have the backup program. Is there another way I can get it or backup some other way?

  • hey wizkid when type in ntbackup it tells me windows cannot find 'ntbackup'

  • Same here, it might be only avalible to xp pro users :(

  • I use a live CD to backup the whole computer and save it to an external USB HD.

If ever cannot boot my computer anymore then I plug my USB external HD and use my live CD to boot the computer and restore it.

  • what is that live cd name that backups?

  • Acronis. You can make backup directly when you use your computer but I recommend to do it with a bootable CD that the program will make for you so that way you know that it can boot.

  • side note: NTbackup does not come standard in all computers..

google: "ntbackup download" and download the plugin from the Microsoft website

  • what's the system state mean?

  • so backing up the system state prevents big reboots? Viruses dont infect programs or documents?

  • great i have on emore question mhhh

well i dont have enough cds like how can i put it on a drive ?? i(windows vista)

  • do i have to do it often ?

  • As often as you can if you are installing new programs and adding things to your PC. Once a month would be good.

  • how do u know if you have winxp pro.. i have it, I tried looking in system tools but back up isnt there. i typed in ntbackup and that didnt work either.

  • I had same problem a while back. Its because you have XP home. No problem though, you can install the backup utility from the windows cd (borrow one if you havent got one, licence key isn't an issue) or you can download it as I did. Can't remember were I got the download, but google it and you'll find it, it'll install to correct place automatically

  • i dont have that back up app

do you know where i can get a 3rd party one or something like that

  • uhm

ok when you pick a drive to choose your back up in, my computer says that the drive is empty so what do i do?

  • Chose your C:\ drive that should not be empty, you need to select the drive that has content. If you have another drive thats empty thats an area you would save you backups to.

  • if you have a virus and you do a restore all you are doing is pushing the virus back to a earlier date when the date that you got the virus elapses again the the virus again will effect you PC. When backing up your system is more logical a Restore doesn't replace corrupted system files associated with viruses and apyware also adware. Advice though I would do a virus scan also a adware scan before backing up your system files so you are not backing up adware, spyware, and virus .dll files

  • i remember using this utility in my lap with xp home but right now some how my xp is not showing this utility in my system typing nt backup from run also not working any suggestion buddies

  • Same here. It's now showing in system tools nor does ntbackup work.

  • whats backing up files do?

  • uhm.. i dont have it o_o...

  • if you type Ntbackup and didn't work you don't have Windows xP Professional

    it only work winxp pro

  • Ahhh...I didn't catch that you needed xpPRO. Oh well..

  • Thanks!

Btw Wiz Kid, how you get your videos so smooth?

    Thanks

    Ro0hm3

  • Let's say you have a backup and a week later it crashes, how do you go about putting that back on after you have formatted the hard drive?

  • The backup is not really meant for you to restore after you formatted the drive. If Windows crashed and you need to restore, you wouls try booting in SAFE Mode and doing a restore instead. If your going to reformat then your already restoring everything to defaults.

  • WINDOW XP PROFESSIONAL

  • thank you very much, ive always wanted to know how to backup my system in case of a disaster and i wish i knew this about 6 months ago when my pc was attacked by spyware, i had to start my OS from scratch but with this im glad i wouldnt have to do that.

  • PCWizKid: what's the difference between using this and using the system recovery (going back to an earlier date), in case of disaster?

  • I'm making a video about System Restore, which is essentially a limited backup of system files compared to all the options you can backup with the Backup tool.

  • yes, I meant System Restore. Thanks for the answer.

  • cool vid!! always helpful

  • Nice Tutorials =). Make a howto format Windows Video ;)

  • haha, thanks.

  • thanks nice video, My favorite backup program is Acronis True Image it's so much better but not free.

  • Awesome Dude. But can you tell me is there any way to make a copy of your operating system if the manufacturer hasn't supplied you with a disc??

  • An entire copy of the operating system only? No.

However you can do a custom backup and backup the entire c:\windows folder which is most of the operating system.

  • Cool.. Thank you!! XD

  • I didnt notice the advanced mode, thanks for pointing it out

  • Very helpful... I should've kept Windows XP but I got that Vista instead

  • Very nice, you kept my dad from a disaster... backed stuff up this morning, crashed a few minutes ago... now we're restoring everything in Safe Mode. Thanks!!

  • only works for windows xp professional? =(

  • I know. I wish it had been at least pointed out that it only works in XP. Here I was thinking this was for everyone. I can't even find "ntbackup" on Vista :(

  • Sorry about that, I updated the video description to say XP. But Vista has basically the same thing, its just that the screens look fancy and are updated.

  • PCWizKid, do you think you can help me with an issue involving my video card? My video card randomly disabled itself, and when re-enabled, it didn't do anything. It acted as though it was disabled. So I restarted, and after the start up, I saw nothing but black. But everything is still there. I can log on and my files are there, but.... I can't see. I really really need to get my files off, help!!

  • What type of video card do you have? All the Nvidia 8600 series cards are bad. I would know, two have crashed on me in the last month! I would talk to your manufacturer. . .

  • Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 from 2003.

  • Are you sure its the Video card and not the Screen? could be your cable of the monitor screen is defective, or the connection to the video card is bad. Can you try another monitor?

If the problem still persists then I would try reseating the video card inside the computer.

  • I changed monitors. I checked cables. I even took the video card out and put it back in.

  • Did you overclock your card? Could be a gonner.

  • Very nice, do you know how to do this on Vista?

  • Hi, its very similar for Vista, its the Backup and Restore Center, look for that in your menu or do a search for it.

  • yay ty!

  • Great vid

  • Nice
