What a bunch of clowns. I love Cynic and I especially like Sean on drums, but to bash Dream Theater in defense of this band is retarded. Cynic has written about 50 MINUTES worth of actual music. While Dream Theater has written 50 songs (actually it's way more). Why does music have to be a fucking competition? This is the same idiotic mentality that brings meatheads and frat boys into metal. STFU and enjoy both bands.

Yeah, I'd start with Focus. First listen is pretty bizzare and the learning curve is a bit jarring, but it's all there. Especially if you're coming from a more metal background, How Could I and Uroboric Forms are great platforms to familiarize yourself with them. Veil of Maya is what really sold them for me though. I'd never heard anything like it before. And Masvidal's solo on that track is sooo good, best solo ever recorded imo.

I think the band took the name from the original meaning of the word- the school of philosophy based on living a life closer to nature. Being free from desires for wealth, power, materialistic goods and believing that the earth is everyone's, equally. I believe the desired effect is to "de-humanize" the voice and further give the vibe that the vocals are given by some supernatural/extradimensional being. This album is really deep and spacy. You should give the other tracks a chance. If it's not your thing though, you prob won't like it lol. To each their own
