What a bunch of clowns. I love Cynic and I especially like Sean on drums, but to bash Dream Theater in defense of this band is retarded. Cynic has written about 50 MINUTES worth of actual music. While Dream Theater has written 50 songs (actually it's way more). Why does music have to be a fucking competition? This is the same idiotic mentality that brings meatheads and frat boys into metal. STFU and enjoy both bands.
@TTMichael18 I could swear that I saw a description from a Cynic video saying that it is called jazz-metal... Even though I didn't notice any jazz sounds in their songs... However, the main idea I was trying to express is that metal is an amazing music genre... I'm not completely new here, so I know what I'm talking about, but you are right, Cynic is a progressive metal band
You also have bands like Opeth with songs like The Devil's Orchard and Nepenthe if you're interested. Though that's more classic jazz fusion/ prog rock.
even though jazz metal is an extraordinary combination, jazz music takes its power from NOT sounding like metal, as does every musical genre and vice versa.
@Nachtmahr I have no idea what's the meaning of the lyrics, but they sound quite profound... And that's enough for me...
Combining jazz and metal doesn't necessarly mean making jazz sound like metal and vice versa, but a few jazz sounds in a metal song would really sound amazing and unique
@11NeMaTz11 How in god's name could you possibly call Justin Bieber an artist? He was created according to Disney's "create-a-star" formula. Calling Bieber an artist on the level of Masvidal is a travesty.
@11NeMaTz11, "artist" is a bit exaggerated. He is a kid, nothing more, nothing less. Alice Cooper was right with sending him LEGO for christmas. And please, watch your language, if you grew some ... hair, then you can talk like that. Politeness is something we need on the net.
@jieiks Personally, I could listen to this album for an eternity while Dream Theater and Tool need to produce albums every year and a half or so to keep fans interested. I think they surpass Dream Theater and Tool by a lot. But, this is just my opinion.
@xPurpleDrinkx9001 Start with the last one (Carbon Based Anatomy EP) and then activate your time machine and listen to ReTraced, Traced in AIr and finally (if you survive it) to the first masterpiece "Focus"! Good Luck Bro!
Yeah, I'd start with Focus. First listen is pretty bizzare and the learning curve is a bit jarring, but it's all there. Especially if you're coming from a more metal background, How Could I and Uroboric Forms are great platforms to familiarize yourself with them. Veil of Maya is what really sold them for me though. I'd never heard anything like it before. And Masvidal's solo on that track is sooo good, best solo ever recorded imo.
Dream Theater has alot of ''meh'' albums and album fillers. But Images & Words and Awake definatly are up there with Cynic IMO. Maybe not instrumentally but it's a bit diffrent genre, Dream Theater is not really Jazzy influenced, rather... sterioids influenced rofl. Those guys were definatly on speed.
@toymasheenSH I have to say I'm not surprised to see you on a Cynic vid Toy.
Anyway, I'd just like to say that if we're talking about DT from 92-02 I'd say that Cynic and DT are pretty much on the same level. But if you're talking about DT from the past 10 years. Well, then it's simply no contest in Cynic's favor.
But hey, for all DT's faults recently, let's not forget the absolute beast of songwriters and bastions of creativity they used to be.
Both Focus and this album are unbelievable. Well, I think the members of this band may be like 200 years old, because the amounts of musical greatness here are just transcendent.
If you are a truth seeker, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click on the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Everyone needs to see this. The Present will turn this world right-side up if it reaches enough people. You will see what I mean when you read the first page.
I think the band took the name from the original meaning of the word- the school of philosophy based on living a life closer to nature. Being free from desires for wealth, power, materialistic goods and believing that the earth is everyone's, equally. It is ironic how the word was bastardized to hold a meaning very opposite what it originally represented. This song sure does make you feel good, though : )
@redl3ss Holy fuck, I know! I just found out about these guys and was looking forward to exploring a bunch f albums, but only 2?!?! these guys are brilliant
@JacobSijsma It's not in any way Antares Autotune that you're hearing on this song; it's a multi-harmony vocoder blending in several different layers of artificial voice. I believe the desired effect is to "de-humanize" the voice and further give the vibe that the vocals are given by some supernatural/extradimensional being. This album is really deep and spacy. You should give the other tracks a chance. If it's not your thing though, you prob won't like it lol. To each their own
@xpidgeonx while I see the purpose of your comment, it's still jacked full of effects and has a similar effect to autotune, while he's a good singer, there's clearly a shittonne of effects, but I do see the root of your comment and mean no flame, this is an interesting song.
@rixxxer Its a phase vocoder programmed to snap to the nearest note. same as autotune. hes using autotune. not because he isnt talented. but because its the sound he wanted. also. autotune is on everything past like 2000. people use it on bass guitar.
If you dig Disillusion i might recommend Dark Suns, Nahema, Amorphis, The Project Hate, Scar Culture, Discincarnate, Persefone, Kalisia, and bands of the like.
@regulartrite Dude, there's around 6.5 billion people in the world and you're hung up on just one! Cheer up my friend! There is definitely more fish out there. Cynic is music for the fucking soul dudes it's great just enjoy it. Oh and their old demos are for the mosh pit. \m/
How is this trying to be like Tool? Tool is nothing like this at all. You may not have listened to this song all the way through, and probably haven't listened to a Tool song all the way through either. I can't see how you would even make such a comparison. lol
@BigTymerPimp i can see a comparison. but not a bad one. i heard this song for the first time tonite on a live video my friend posted. it sounded awesome so i looked up the album. going to buy it but anyway. it reminds me of tool, in spirit. not really musically though. more BTBAM to me. if someone told me this was a BTBAM demo id believe them.
Who gives a fuck what kind of genre the music is. its fucking amazing and anyone who says otherwise should die of testicle cancer after their kids get addicted to meth.
What a bunch of clowns. I love Cynic and I especially like Sean on drums, but to bash Dream Theater in defense of this band is retarded. Cynic has written about 50 MINUTES worth of actual music. @chrissneakybeaut

The transition @1:30 makes me wet my pants; Sean Reinert is a genius.
