The item can be called either a silencer or suppressor, but I would contest that a gun shouldn't be called "silenced" even with a silencer affixed But AK's can be suppressed quite well, you just have to adjust your expectations about what "silencers" do from Hollywood to the real world.

I know that an echoed sound source is sometimes harder to locate than a suppressed sound, and sometimes you want the enemy to know that youve got an AK in your hands and the innaccuraccy of the of AK will be compounded by the suppressor. If you want to go for a stealthy suppressed weapon this is not practical, try 5.56. This is still cool though.

Its working when you hear the ballistic crack and the firing of the weapon and two different times. it may be that a suppressed sound is easier to locate.. maybe in an smaller location, but he's using it in a field. AK are accurate up to 300m and seeing your squad member drop after hearing a tiny sound that you don't register as a gunshot then the crack of the bullet hitting someone's chest is enough to freak you out
