I heard rumor that all the puppers were kept by one of the puppeteers or crew members in a box in the attic for years. They were up there for so long that some fell apart were covered in mould. The only two that were saved were Rudolph and Santa. Poor Hermey....
It's never been confirmed, but there was a rumor going around that they were trying to restore all the puppets. This leads credence to the rumor that the guy who found them made a pretty penny off them, since the amount they were bought for has never been disclosed.
They were taken home by one of the production crew after the show was made. She gave them to her children who played with them, stuck play dough in their mouths, lost the nose for Rudolph, lost santa's eye brows, and many other tragedies. They were purchased by Time and Space toys. They were restored and are now put on display I'm happy to say.

Those puppets are in pretty good shape, considering that they're over 40 years old!
