And though some might give you crap for not riding both ways, I see your reasoning with the vacation time. It's not many that can take off that many days, have enough money for a full round trip ride, not rushing through states, and not having to do 800+ miles a day. Most people don't even leave their own state for a 'quick' half day trip for lunch. You've got a better "distance biker story" than most folks you'll talk to. Good on you!
Sme people can go their whole lives riding bikes and never attempt this right of passage. I think it's a must do before you die type of thing. In May/June of 2009, I rode my 2008 Night Rod Special solo from San Diego to Chesterfield VA (riding all the way south through New Orleans), and then straight across the US to northorn Cali and then down the PCH back to San Diego. I rode passing through 21 states / 7740 miles. I had the time of my life just riding alone with my machine and my thoughts.
I did not want to burn up all my vacation time. My friend who owns a trucking company in Richmond, VA quoted a great price to direct ship my bike to LA. I flew to LA with three friends and spent 10 days riding cross country. It was a great trip.
I don't get why you trucked your bike to LA. Was it just a 1 way trip back to Richmond? and what state is Richmond in you rode to? I know many states that has Richmond in them.
