You're right, the shorts have always been olive, but the shirts used to be olive too (and collarless, since they'd be worn with a neckerchief). Eventually they added a collar, and the colour changed from olive to tan sometime, I believe, in the early 1980s. Plus, if he's wearing shorts, he needs the socks with the red band on top - the ones he's got are if you're wearing long trousers.
