@SteveNovak I totally agree !! Ares is more about Shuttle jobs rather than actual progress. Falcon9 can carry 7 people to space(and is far safer than Ares could ever be) for only 50 million per launch. Yet Ares1 cost over a billion per launch just to carry 3-4 people to space !! Lets all hope Ares stays dead.

Thats the launch escape rocket they tested. Just like the one they used on Apollo (well, they never USED it). Its just a lot bigger.

Just a point of history, Apollo 11 was in 1969 and Americans first manned flight in space (did not orbit) was in 1961. 8 years, not very long at all.

The launch escape rocket that was on top of the Apollo 11 Command Module, that "little" solid rocket, had more thrust than the Redstone booster they used in Freedom 7. Amazing progress.
