Look, I tihnk the intro is a pentatonic improvisation, so, sorry I just got to read your post after 8 months but, if you use a blues scale to improvise you'll get it right.
i dont know how many different years fender put binding on the front and back of the tele, but my 1962 (RI) does. although the 62 had a rosewood fingerboard because maple showed wear sooner and easier. mabey he slapped together a couple different ones. so.. this probably doesn't help at all. great band by the way.
its a jerry donahue signiture guitar (however you spell his name) thats why it has the binding, i think it looks better with the binding, but they dont put it on the new ones because they are one solid piece of wood so they dont have to bind anything together. by the way i love this band and cant wait to see them in january
