As a proud Jewish American, I hope that Mir-Hossein Moussavi will win the presidential election just to kick Ahmadinejad out of office. Not only was Ahmadinejad getting unpopular with people of Tehran for not rebuilding their economy, he was also practically isolating Iran politically due to his outrageous remarks against USA and Israel. I'm hoping Moussavi can help Iran's economy and strangthen ties with USA and Israel and other countries of the world.

Does anyone know why he refused to run for president in 1997? It's interesting that Khatami, who won by a landslide in 1997 decided not to run this year and encouraged people to vote in favor of Mousavi.

He didn't run in 1997 because supposedly he received "discouraging" massages from some high ranking officials.

If Khatami had run for presidency he would've been killed by now and the election might've been canceled and worse case senario there would've been a coup d'etat. Plus Mousavi has the support of some groups who wouldn't vote for Khatami. At the end it doesn't matter if it's Mousavi who's president or Khatami, they both follow the same idealogy. What matters is getting one of them in the presidency position with minimum amount of blood-shed and violence from conservatives.

I'm not a fan of the Israeli government, but these incidents that keep happening in Iran have really had me scratching my head. It all seemed like such a set-up. It was almost like they were following the Bush formula: scare up fear among the public, get them to vote for the "strong" (military) candidate (as happened here in 2004). The attack on the election office was clearly the work of an amateur. I thought it was rather convenient how that bomb on the plane was magically discovered.

Here's the real question though: how effective could a reformist like Mousavi or Khatami really be with Khamanei as supreme leader? I like Mousavi from what I know, which is hard to know anything as all the coverage on him is in Farsi, but he seems very intellectual, stately, and still very patriotic. But with the Supreme Leaders, I see a lot of barriers.

Maybe Mousavi won't be able to do anything. But that's the worst case scenario with him. Worst case scenario if Ahmadi-nejhad is elected...? Well anything your mind can concieve of is possible. War, nuclear threat, our own version of Mugabe in Iran...

Khatami faced the same problems, but he managed to do a lot. Although people always say he didn't do anything but that's because he didn't (and couldn't) live up to the high expectations (I wonder sometimes if Obama will face the same issue)...

...and because a lot of work Khatami did was creating transparency in the regime, which didn't go down well with the regime and that's why there was violence and repression for a while. But these are all necessary steps, we can't have an overnight miracle or revolution (which is what people seemed to expect)

Mousavi is actually in a better position than Khatami. First of all as he was the prime minister during the war, some conservatives have a lot of respect for him...

...also Ahmadi-njhad has repelled a lot of the other conservatives who now look in Mousavi for a more reformist and rational leader (this is one reason why Khatami stepped aside for Mousavi, because these people would never back up Khatami).

Also, I think if we get a good set of candidates for the next parliamentary election, then majority of the government would back Mousavi.

In any case no change is better than negative change.
