Take a look at john-tom.com website, some good ideas of steam engines with differernt valve types. Also E-zee steam engines free plans. Very small but easy to scale up or borrow ideas.
Very impressive. This is a guess, but I'm assuming you're losing a lot of potential force on the wheel, from having it exposed to the open air; rather than push the wheel around, the steam is basically just being blown off by the wind. You'd probably want an enclosed chamber for that, ideally.
i took a 3.5 HP engine of a push mower added two lobes to the cam shaft elimiationg the compressoin stoke and fireing stoke i piped a 40 gallon hotwater heat factory tested at 300psi i heat this with oil and wood and compressed air (it will run on wood by itself but its slow 1 or 2 longer) anyway i open then vaule with a 1/2 pipe i can make it do 3000 rpm easy and 4000 aswell i wouldn't take it much higher then that i might throw a rod that would be very messy but she runs like a dream
@NicholasToka Hi Again, The pressure tank is a hot water heater steel tank. It had an original pressure test rating above 115 psi but I only run to 75 psi or so. The cost was very little to me as I used salvage parts to make it. Be careful though. Used tanks and pressure vessels have unknown wall thicknesses to consider due to rust.
Nice job on the boiler. I would have expected the engine to be flying but that's a work in progress. Doesn't change my veiw on the boiler. Could you tell me how you built it?
@dwalch1 Thanks. Yeah the engine is just something cobbled together, that the reason it barely worked. The boiler is made from a water heater tank. Surronded by a sheet metal container the channel the hot flames up around the tank for better heating of maximum surface area. Raising steam wasnt too hard.
@rwhendrix I very much like it. I'd been wondering if a water heater could handle the heat and pressure. Guess that answers the question. Would love to see you put it to work.
Trick is the boiler uses, A valvles pulse jet type housing, andDeisel typeThemistat too individualy open and then close each boilers feed water line with temprature fuctuation as the water coming in to the boiler will temporaraly cool each tube,
The boiler breaths and burns like the jet but make heat and steam rather than being tuned for thrust.
Yes, I agree. The engine I made is to loose to work well with steam at 50psi. I am intending to try my turbine with this boiler at that pressure and see what happens.
You need shorter and bigger piston. The same happened to me :)

Like the boiler. Hook this up to a weedeater engine with a check valve and you should be in business...

maybe you put a tesla turbine on that good job

Hey, why is there steam leaks? That looks like some heavy flywheel. 5/5

What exactly are you planning on doing with that machine?

your steam engine needs some rethinking. good start though.
blast it into a turbine maybe?
