Dave Stewart and Hugo Mont Cambell finally blasted progressive rock into the realms of modernjazz/ modern classical eg Stravisnki. Maybe it was just that I was studying music at the time before heading off to become a vet at university that I was totally taken in by this band. There was apparently a time when brilliance like this seeped through when no one was noticing. I love all the albums they made. What about another-please!
@zincorbie LOL! absolutely! as a bass player, I took it as a serious challenge to learn this song (as well as the rest of the album), and that day when I finally played it error-free was one of the happiest days of my playing life ... the brilliance of this album was that the odd-meter charts weren't just gratuitous "haha - we can actually play this stuff" displays of competence - it was all deliciously musical ... Mont's singing is a hoot, too
@magicwonder You should listen to the intro of Long Piece no. 3 part 1 also by Egg. The pattern there is 123 12 12 123 12 12 12 12 123 12 12 12 12 12 12 123 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 123. And from the begining =)
Stewart is a genius!

I heard they wouldn't play this song live because that time signature was insane. I don't know, I used to play drums to it and had a blast.

I don't know this group, and I just started listening to this song. After fighting with the time signature, I ask if one counts 14/8
As soon as the singing begins, I noticed a neat pattern, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2, 1
3 sets of 3, 2 sets of 2, and 1 set of 1. Does this make sense to people who know this band well?

The odd meters keep the song moving and engaging. Not a boring 4/4 beat but what sounds to be predominantly a 11/8 meter with maybe a couple others
Nice solos too in the brass and saxophones Kind of a renegade jazz band playing prog rock.
This is music.
