I love this movie, and while Arnold will always be the original and best Terminator, I find Patrick's role in this film just as awesome, In my opinion the T-1000 was always better than the TX in everyway, sure TX could do more fancy stuff but T-1000 had a factor that I just didnt feel in the TX, that was the badass factor xD.

And to put the nail in the coffin, all he needed to do was imitate her voice to call for john, his "malfunctioning" appearance didnt matter, all he needed was for john to come running to the voice of his mother . Obviously john cant die...but wish they made this scene a little more air-tight.

The T-800 doesn't lose its arm in the first movie, and it only loses its bio-disguise. It got run over by a truck before that, but it fought Kyle Reese, a human, and was then blown in half. In T2, the T-800 is fighting another machine, one that not only severs its arm and gives it a beating, but disables it primary power source.

It was the only way to kill the T-1000, simply because no conventional weaponry could sufficiently put it down. That's why its considered that the T-1000 is simply much more dangerous than the T-X, it couldn't sustain damage like the T-X did viable to put it down.

Also, I'm pretty sure the 'poly-alloy' is like a composite of many, many tiny nanomachines working in concert, which would collectively be destroyed by the intense heat faster than they can repair themselves, or impeded such that they can't prevent him from diffusing.
