It was a really sad day at WUAB, "Superhost" ended after 20 years at the station, (although Marty Sullivan remained at the station as a staff announcer until 1993). Around that time, WUAB was sold from Gaylord Broadcasting to Cannell Communications (owned by the late Stephen J. Cannell), not long after that, "Barnaby" (the late Linn Sheldon) ended after a long run in Cleveland television. Now all they play today is crappy shows, sad.
@wsp136 I never saw all of this, because my mother shut the TV off on me because she HATED Superhost (not as much as she HATED The Ghoul and Big Chuck & Lil' Jon). But from what little I saw that day, I had a very STRONG feeling that he was extremely PISSED OFF. They NEVER should have ended that show, because WUAB's weekend programming went straight to hell from that point.
thanks for posting this...I grew up in the 80s and always looked forward to watching this on Saturdays, but I didn't know the history. I always remembered the Three Stooges, the horror movies and Godzilla movies.
However, the memories were a bit jumbled, so I never knew they were all part of this Saturday afternoon, I just thought they were seperate memories. This helps piece things together.
Now, if there were only a way to get some of his shows on DVD, I'd buy them in a second.
Growing up in the late 70s and 80s, I watched a lot of Superhost. Didn't live in Cleveland, grew up in Columbus, but fortunately we had cable TV and watched Superhost on there.
Good ol SuperHost. I was born in Elyria, and lived on IRONDALE, WEST RIVER, and TEDMAN, until I was 5 1/2. I I saw him ONCE in 1981, and never again. I never knew how long he was on until JUST NOW. I still miss SuperHost.
My kids don't know what they are missing. We were so lucky to have SuperHost, Houlihan and Big Chuck/Big Chuck and Little John, and the Ghoul. I even remember Ghoulardi, but not much. I miss those B-movies.
I have very fond memories of watching Supe on Saturdays when I visited my grandparents house in good 'ole Uhrichsville Ohio. Of course I watched Hoolihan on Friday night and The Ghoul on Saturday night. What a terrific lineup of shows. TV today is nothing but reality s**t. There is no imagination in TV or movies anymore...sad!!! What ever happened to Marty Sullivan?
I was about 15 when that show ended.I miss Superhost I use to watch it every Sat afternoon, and never went outside until that show was over.Man they don't make shows like this anymore.
Hey I am running Camera One outside the theater! Shortly after we taped this last episode Marty had a heart attack. This was a very very sad time at WUAB. Gaylord sold the station to Cannell Broadcasting and they came in and canceled all of the local shows except for the news. The last Barnaby shows was so sad too, he walked off the set into the bushes and just wept.
Nothing beat the Cleveland area Friday and Saturday TV line up during the early 70's. Big Chuck and Hoolahan, Superhost and the Ghoul. I moved to Michigan in the late 70's and suprise! The ghoul was there. But his show wasn't nearly as good as the Cleveland show. People up here in Michigan think the Ghoul was a Detroit thing, they have no idea.
I know I am going to get beat up for this but-Sir Graves Ghastley was not funny.
Cleveland HAD and started alot of stuff but now we have nothing but crap and the powers that be do nothing to preserve anything in cleveland. The programming was great now what do we have 19 Action News and Fox 8 lol
I never realized how many other things that Supe did on Channel 43. Man, almost every commercial for the station he did the voice overs for. How versatile!
We had the best of both worlds in Pittsburgh...we got to see Chilly Billy Cardille and also Superhost. I remember this final broadcast. I was so distraught that later that day I tried to hang myself. I was discovered and cut down, but I sustained severe brain damage and lost the use of my right arm and right leg, which has never returned. They are withered appendages now, and dangle uselessly from my trunk. Which one these statements is untrue?
Thank you for posting this. I grew up in Columbus and Supe came to us when cable TV first arrived in the mid-70's. Seeing this washes away 35 years and brings a warm smile.
Amen to that! I remember watching Supe every Saturday with my friends, when I was a kid back in the '70s. What a great show. It's cliched to say, but they really don't make shows like this any more.
Damn! Supe, along with John Lannigan,Big Chuck and Little John and Rich Morgan are some of my favorite memories of Cleveland. Also The Abbott and Costello Film Festival on Sundays!
Trivia: The music (clarinet, chimes, tuba etc.) behind Supe's segments is "Clinkerated Chimes" by Bernie Green and his Stereo MAD-Men from the Musically MAD album on RCA Victor from 1959. (yes, the one with the huge smiling Alfred E Neuman on the cover). Miss ya Supe!!
I remember this!!! I remember when they had him, Barnaby and somebody else on all at the same time and thinkin that was the coolest thing ever. I was like 7 or 8 at the time.
Mr Sullivan- You were jst a tad mistaken all those years ago in your closing. You, sir, are the class act! Thank you So much for all those saturday afternoons. There are so many here in Cleveland and the WUAB broadcasting area that will always recall you, and your show with fond memories!
can anyone get a hold of some old captain penny and barnaby from cleveland?...and yes this was a walk down memorie lane for me also...i lived thru ghoulardi...the ghoul...hoolihan big chuck...loved it all....try and get captain penny...and barnaby...love to see them again...thanks
Last night I was telling my fiancee about Superhost. She said there's probably some clips on YouTube. She was right. Thank you so much. I remember the Godzilla and Gamera movies the most.
@jethropu I'm 33 (three years after you wrote this) and this puts a tear in my eye thinking of how my dad and I would watch Superhost on Saturdays and I got my Three Stooges and Laurel & Hardy and Godzilla education from those shows. I always LOVED The Moronic Woman!!! I never knew how spoiled this area was to have such great artists!
Wow! I can't believe I forgot about Super Host!!! I used to watch this as a kid ALL THE TIME! London Ontario Canda actually got Cleveland Channel 43, so I'd watch the 3 Stooges + everything else on the show.. Amazing! Thank you!
You and me both. :-p Remember how this and WSEE 35 from Erie would never come in on days when it was raining? Pissed me off because I'd want to watch GI Joe.
this is actually my uncle. He is doing just fine and living in oregon. I will show him this site and he will be amazed that alot of pepople remember him. He is still as funny as ever. He will love this.
OK... this is a small world. I lived in London Ontario as well. I also grew up watching Supe every Saturday afternoon (when the reception was good) I miss the good 'ole days! :(
Martin Sullivan deserved better. People were still tuning in, so what excuses did the new owners have in doing this? They still showed some of the films that had been on "SuperHost" on Saturday afternoons. Why not include that guy who hosted these films?
When I was a kid, I used to send in drawings to SuperHost every week and he'd show them on the air. I always wondered what finally happened to my old Saturday afternoon pal.
This is at the time when the ownership of Channel 43 switched hands from Gaylord Broadcasting Company to Cannell Communications. Martin Sullivan is the best voiceover announcer ever!
