Besides the indoor video game aracde, they have an outdoor small ferris wheel . There is also at least one boat that goes to Catalina Island from there around 9AM I think. In other words, there is more than mere sand and water at the beach itself. There is literally something there for everyone. In my opinion, Newport Beach doesn't have anything on Balboa Beach. And I am not knocking Newport Beach in anyway. I am just saying that Balboa has a lot more to offer.
This is my alltime favorite beach in Southern California! I will take this beach over Newport Beach anytime! I come here at least once during the summer months. I like it because they have all all-day parking lot along with a grassy picnic area equipped with BBQ grills. Across the street is Newport Harbor. From there,you can go on one of two harbor cruises or even the ferry which will take you to the other side of Balboa Peninsula or island. Also an indoor video game arcade for kids there.
