Actually, Rally-X was also a Japanese game, by the same company that made Pac-Man no less. The "experts" at the time thought Rally-X would be the top-seller simply because it was the more technically impressive game (with technical innovations like multi-directional scrolling, radar map, background music, and bonus stages), completely overlooking the core fun factor that made Pac-Man one of the most successful games of all time.
