@maxthecat14 You are right they do sound nice. Worth noting that they probably sound good in this music because it is the most lyrical part of the opera - the opera as a whole is arguably not ideal for them.
@Ragnaroekk I think you are correct to some extent. It is possible to notice a few problems here. Carreras is inclined to 'shout' a bit on high notes and maybe 'croons' a little too much on the soft music. Ricciarelli is inclined to pull some tricks because the quality of the voice is not at its best etc I might argue however that it was actually a mixture of heavy roles e.g. Puccini's Turandot which were less than idea rather than Verdi per se (conductors also a factor e.g. Karajan)
I agree with both your comments and novice 1959's completely. This is a magnificently sensitive and emotional pair. They both are true actors also. Their pianissimos are true Verdi at its best. Ricciarelli is pure in her bel canto moments. Also, she never drowns out the Radames moments and vice versa. They are a balanced, giving pair - as operatic lovers should be. This is not merely two virtuosos singing side by side. They are one here. It is so moving.
There's nothing more to add here. Ricciarelli can easily take her place as one of the greatest sopranos ever and as for Carreras - he is just unique. There's no one like him and there will never ever be one like him again. They both sing with their hearts: what's the use of the best techique if there is no heart in it. Since they are my favorite opera performers alongside Ruggero Raimondi and Piero Cappucilli, I am very glad that this wonderful duet was put online. Thanks a lot!
@novice1959 Unfortunately she stopped singing that well immediately after when she started singing Aida,Tosca,Turandot and other for her heavy roles...you will understand the criticism when you search her more recent clips - they are unfortunately embarrasing...
She also has neck and jaw issues.. Whenever sopranos start singing out of the side of their mouths.. they are using throat muscles to make the pitch, because their folds wont. In short.. her posture ... does not look comfortable
This is just magnificent! I could write hundreds of words but let's make it short:
Ricciarelli sings Aïda with a strong bel canto flavor but it doesn't bother me at all, she is very concentrated and sings it perfectly with a lot of emotion. Carreras? Whom else? Again and after many years, he is crushing me (as many others I am sure). The voice of course.... But the eyes, the entire behavior: he is Radames and will definitely remain the greatest tenor I have listened to and seen.
Feiner Gesang!

To my totally unmusical ears, this sounds pretty damn good for two "wrecked" voices. One of my favourite duets.

No voices for Verdi. Both wrecked their voices singing Verdi. It worked with electronics in the studio. On stage, it was fatal.

Thank you! Carreras is my favorite!

This is perfect! Jose Carreras is the only tenor that, to my ear, has an even more beautiful voice than his idol, di Stefano.
Ricciarelli is outstanding here too, I don't understand the criticism of her singing.
Just lovely!
