Taker had an injury in 1999 and was supposed to compete in the 6 pack challenge for the WWF championship, but left the company in september 1999 and returned in May 2000
there were some shades of Undertaker becomming American Bad Ass before he left i believe in September. He started comming out with a bandana, black jeans shirt and sunglasses. Judgement Day was his first appearance as the Bad Ass
there was a situation going on with him and his then-wife, Sara. also, something with him and vince, but im not completely sure. if you noticed for the Wrestlemania 2000 poster, he was featured on there, in which he was supposed to return, but was still taking time off to deal with his love life and things at home.
@RAWISJM316 he said in an interview he was thinking about it before the injury but when he had to take time off he thought his character needed a fresh look and loved the rebel rider thing

taker was due to return in feb 2000 but then he injured his pectorial so his return was delayed until judgment day 2000
