But when John Paul II was not the real Pope, who is? and who was the last real Pope? is it possible that the Church is deprived of a valid Pope for so long a time? i'm concerned catholic, and would like to have the church back in it's powerful glory days. Now it's almost become a desert.
Greek was actually the dominant language of the Roman Church in the 1st century, not latin. Latin gradually replaced greek but it was not the first language of roman liturgy. Latin soon became the vernacular toungue of the romans. One reason why latin is no longer "THE" language of the mass is because it is no longer the vernacular toungue of the church. The roman church now spreads far and wide to everywhere in the world therefore many languages now replace latin.
Latin is the ideal tool for the transmission of cultural literacy. Latin is, in fact, the mother tongue of Western civilization—a language that incorporated the best ideas of the ancient Greeks, and which then, after the conversion of Rome, put them into the service of Christian truth.
A recent article in US News and World Report, reported that Latin classes are filling up in middle and high schools across the nation. The number of students taking the National Latin Exam has risen from 5,000 in 1977 to more than 135,000 in 2007. Yes, they actually like Latin! The article also fails to point out the many Catholic homeschoolers who have added Latin to the curriculum and are enrolling their students in the National Latin Exam.
Archbishop Lefebvre is a rebel! If he is insisting that the tridentine Mass is the real Mass, let the Pius X movement show evidence that Jesus and the Apostles themselves celebrated the Eucharist in the Tridentine way! Did Jesus used Latin or Aramaic in instituting the First Eucharist? Did the 1st and 2nd Christianity used already the tridentine rite? Hello!
Nailed to the cross that Jesus died on was the sign, Jesus, King of the Jews, written in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Latin was the language used by St. Peter when he first said Mass at Rome. It was the language in which that Prince of the Apostles drew up the Liturgy which, together with the knowledge of the Gospel, he or his successors the Popes imparted to the different peoples of Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Hungary, and Poland. (OLRL)
In the years following Vatican II and the introduction of the Novus Ordo or New Order (the New Liturgy), the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass began to be described in terms such as the Old Mass, or the "Latin" Mass or the "Tridentine" Mass to distinguish it from the New Liturgy of the post Vatican II years. The Latin Mass was 'codified' at the Council of Trent, but was in use dating back to the Last Supper, the First Mass.
What a clear-thinking and holy man the good Archbishop Lefebvre was. Maybe one day, if we pray hard enough, we will see a man like this leading the Church as Pope...
God be praised for giving Christendom this holy and courageous Bishop, worthy of the name. Archbishop Lefevre, ora pro nobis!
