  • He threw in "Little Martha" at the end. I think I might be crying.

  • at the risk of sounding like a moron.....

3 people have no taste in music

  • @jolt583

You would never sound like a moron. Nothing wrong with pointing out the truth my friend :-)

  • Does anybody know where I can find tutorials/sheet/score for "monkey let the hogs out"?

  • It sounds wrong at the end when there's no raging applause.

  • I met Jerry last night. Very nice man!

  • titties

  • If you dont at least appreciate Jerry's musicianship, go to hell.....seriously join those who don't belong in heaven where Jerry will be jamming all day every day.

  • America's best dobro player. :)

  • @FriedEggsWithChips - The WORLD's best dobro player!

  • @Beargrizzly76 OK lol if you say so. ;)

  • Jerry Douglas is Eric Clapton on a Dobro.

  • @Diesloanen there are a ton of better guitar players than Eric Clapton you could have used in this reference.

  • @shane5911

    Thanks for your opinion.

  • 0:43 whats the title of this song? :)

  • @DanskeSange Little Martha.

  • @SpawnofHastur I found out it was Lil Roro.. Thanks buddy.

  • 0:43 anyone knows what the song hes starting to play here is called?

  • Two more days 'till I see him perform with Alison Krauss- wooohooo!

  • Good beyond description! thanks for posting this. what a master!

  • I thought I'd heard the best guitarists in the world, Montoya, Segovia, Clapton, Hendrix, Bonamassa, Page, Albert Lee, George Harrison Buddy Guy, Garland, Satriani, Walsh, Santana, Lonnie Mack, Leo Kottke, James Burton, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray, and a shitload of other people. But, Jerry Douglas is without a doubt the one guitarist who makes the guitar laugh, sing, cry, and shout out loud: " Look at me! I'm a piece of wood with six strings across my body and this is what I should sound like.

  • achei loco mas o audio tem umas falhihas que quebram todo o clima

  • 00:25 haha japan fusion trance sound

    AWESOME VIDEO!

  • I tried to learn Dobro. Problem I had was that I wanted to play just like him. So I had had to put it down for a while.

  • How dobros must yearn to be touched by Jerry Douglas...

  • I have to show this to all my teenage friends. Maybe they will finally understand why I like this kind of music.

  • He's almost as good as Curtis Lowe! ;-)

  • don't be dissin' snoop or fitty. they are jsust as awesome in their own way

  • Reminds me a bit of Kottke.

  • Amazing talent. Fantastic live too.

  • The three people who didn't like this must be banjo players...lol

  • What tuning is this in?

  • @MrAustinSalt Hi dude, its tuned in D D A D F# A D

  • @Terryobrien2

    Thank you so much man!

  • @MrAustinSalt You're welcome dude, check out my video called 'Sweet Emily Rose', it's also tuned in D.

  • Outstanding!

  • I've been aware of this man's genius for a few years, but haven't listened to him really very much, because I'm not a big bluegrass guy, more into jazz. But this wonderful piece of blues makes me want to head over to my friendly online record store and order a stack of his CDs.

  • what tuning is he in?

  • good !

  • F'n amazing!!! JD is a master!

  • seen him live - Jerry is the same, only better

a very funny guy onstage as well

  • SIck right hand!

  • Inspirational!!

  • Wow, what a player. Amazing.

  • I wish the volume was higher.

  • SWEEEEET!

  • no hes just have a conversation with his guitar,

  • Was that Little Martha thrown in there?

  • @drcarico It was Lil' Ro' Ro', then little martha, then a monkey let the hogs out

  • I love Jerry Douglas. I named my last cat after him (and my current cat is named Bela).

  • @BeckyPoC You left one out .. There is a college in N.Y...Named ''VASSAR''

  • wonderful!

  • One word...amazing!

  • здорово-молодец!!!!

  • One of the best musicians of all time!

  • o.0

  • Fantastic!!!

  • If I could have one wish; it would be to know how to play this whole thing and nothing else! Image saying to someone "Yeah, I can play, but I only know one song." Then bust out with this!

  • Me too...it looks so complicated. I determined to learn anyway.

  • 4:20. Tribute to the best guitarist that ever lived. Duane Allman

  • I started to play dobro last year thanks to Jerry. He is so inspiring.

Please check out my video called 'Sweet Emily Rose', a little dobro tune I wrote for my daughter.

  • now I know where edgar meyer gets all his licks from...

  • i was in the mood to pick but after that i just really dont know (Staring at screen half an hour after the video ended)

  • incredeble as usual for jerry douglas

  • so impressive. and i don't usually enjoy this kind of music!

  • thats awsome , good playing man!!

  • Way to go Jerry BOY!! Maybe next time you're in Canada you can come over and jam with me and my bud's. Beer and steak is on us.

  • Funny, I'd never really seen a Dobro up close like that. I can't believe how high the action is.

Looks like you could fit two dollars worth of quarters under his strings...

  • @billykid84 Oh yeah, they're super high. My buddy tried to play a Dobro like a normal guitar once and had to quit after about five minutes, it was so hard. Some people still play it that way, though. :/

  • is that a dobro or a lap steel? because you can actually play a dobro with your fingers alone, and i don't really see how it would be possible with this...

  • Your askin' the wrong dude, dude...

  • @LTmattYT. A propper dobro cant be played with your fingers, you need to use a "Bar". It is played much the same as a lap steel but you get a more acoustic sound. What you are thinking of is a Resonator Guitar. They have a much lower action and can be played with the fingers. The usual action on a dobro is about a half inch. its about 10mm on mine iirc.

  • what if you had a prosthetic hand and like plated them with metal?

  • LOL, that would totaly work, I must admit. But I think it would be a little difficult to hit the notes you were after. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Wow imagine how many strings the dude has gone through.

  • *blown away* :)

  • I Love 'Little Martha ' by allman Bros. and Dickie Betts....

  • That middle song destroys me. I might have never been a fan of it if I hadn't seen this...

  • Comment removed

  • kaysandesses, the "middle song" is actually called Little Martha and is by the Allman Brothers Band.

  • that's 4:19 of my life that i would love to rewind and do again.

  • Amazing, this is the stuff i've been looking for!

  • what tuning is he in?

  • Most likely DADF#AD

  • @jbgordon He usually uses G B D G B D.

  • Comment removed

  • @sepulchre10 You're right. He does normally use G tuning, seeing as that's standard dobro tuning. On this particular medley, and on songs like Tribute to Peador O'Donnell, he uses D tuning. If you want to find that lowest pitch when he digs into a big open chord, you'll find that it's a D.

  • @jbgordon yep. D it is. Thanks!

  • great stuff!

  • I would trade the AIDS virus. To play like this dude. If I ever get that good I'll get tested

  • You are funny....You should write a song using those lyrics. Watching this guy I see where your coming from. Check out Charo and her wicked guitar skills. I was beyond mezmerized...not kidding, who knew? seriously.

  • Charo was a student of Andres Segovia

  • Stop saying stupid things like this....

  • LOFL - Now that's fucking funny

  • How does this man not have arthritis? :P

JD is thee man of dobro.

  • Oh, my, Jerry is the Man in DobroLand. I bought a cheap dobro to learn on, I play guitar, (not slide) and he inspires me to learn this.

Got to love "the stare" that guitar players get, but better yet, I see an oral thing going on here, mouthing something...instructions to himself? Reminders?" Notes? JD is my main man, I can 90% of the time pick him out as the dobro player on a song. Lots of imitators, and that is a compliment.

  • annelle45 - many years ago I had a guitar teacher that told me that involuntary mouth and lip movements were due to brain architecture. Whatever area it is in your brain that you tap into when playing guitar is also associated with singing. As you get zoned in on your guitar playing you lose a bit of conscious control and your mouth and lips move as if you are attempting to sing. It always made sense to me.

  • Nicest Dobro tone I ever heard. This man knows how to play!

  • Just magic

  • Breathtaking is the word! I had the opportunity to see Jerry and his band at a small venue in NY last summer. They had my tongue dragging. One song they would sound like the Chieftains, the next like the 1971 Allmans doing Mountain Jam. Not a missed note all night. Someone said to me that he was the Hendrix of the dobro. Got to talk with him between shows, and told him he was not the Hendrix, he was the Duane Allman of the Dobro. Am going to see him with Elvis Costello next week!

  • @oldrockfan19 Thats kind of funny because Little Martha is the only song that Duane Allman wrote!

  • Breathtaking!

  • Any one remember the name of the tune Jerry starts to play at 3:10?

  • Little Martha - Duane Allman

  • Bah! Of course... Thanks a bunch.

  • Pure Magic!!

  • Are the squareneck, wood body guitars the only ones that are true DoBros?

  • A Dobro could be any guitar made under that label. Many are roundneck guitars.

  • He sounds like Leo Kottke, but it still great !!

  • Awesome JD, just awesome !

  • Very good thanks for posting it. Ya like this mate check out Jeff Lang he's the shit.

  • I love that intro.. the first 45 secs are quality...

  • Jerry is one of my greatest inspirations as a player for my life... and I've been playing guitar of one kind or another for 35 years... then I got to meet hem. He is as gracious and considerate as he is talented. And, because of his encouragement I'm now working with the Dobro... inspiring. :)

  • mezmerized for all 4 minutes and 20 seconds......Thank you Ray for the share....:)))

    Kappa

  • wow that was long!

  • He's playing a medley of three songs, hence the length.

  • Haven't read all the comments, may have been said before: JD is the Leo Kottke of the dobro!!

Kickin' , and I can tell him from the rest of the wannabes on first or second listen. GO, baby!

  • someone knows where can i find the tablature about the part starting at 0:44 ?

  • I seriously recommend figuring it out without tab... it will do you the most good.

  • no one can match him on dobro. He is the best of the best.

  • That is pure talent/dedication/study/passion.

Kinda like 50 cents or snoop dog or those clowns!

    NOT!!!!!!!!!

  • snoop dog is a leader in his genre like douglas is a leader in his. they both do what they do very, very well.

  • Simply amazing!

  • whats up with the action on that guitar!?!?! must have strong hands to play that bad boy...........just kidding, man i wish i could get this sound half as good as anything he plays

  • damn guitar store sold me a square neck guitar with 3/4 inch high action...well i knew i had this swiss army knife for a reason...it's whittlin' time!!!! haha jk i just got a Paul Beard signature Gold Tone...epic!

  • Gotta be the best I've heard!

  • Beatiful playing. If you're into this you'll want to check out our profile, ta.

  • ain't this Allison's dobro player?

  • yes

  • no Allison is Jerry`s singer

  • i hear that

  • @bigroy38 He's also her producer.

  • There are more and more vids that disguting me to continue trying play lap style guitar...

    Argh !

  • this man is fuckin simply amazing

  • he's the best in the world

  • Does anyone recognize the melody from 2:26 to 3:20? I have heard it before but I cannot put my finger on it.

  • LIttle Martha - Alman Bros. Saw Jerry perform this live in concert - AMAZING!

  • Little Martha by the Allman Brothers Band.

  • someone know the brand of this strings...?

  • I'm just going to jump to the typical bluegrass stereotypes and say GHS

  • are you sure...?I'm trying the "ghs strings Semi-flat nickel" and...I don't like them!Sound isn't good...I want to try the phosphor bronze one GHS or Beard...!

  • Jerry endorses D'Addario strings, if you check his website he has a "gear" section that lists everything he uses.

  • DAddario with a Gibson usualy

  • Austin Clark, from The Clark Brothers, follows in Jerry's footsteps as one of the best dobro players, in my book! We love you Austin!!!

  • Im 39 been playing since I was 7. On the ride home from work today a song comes on the radio. I get home turn off the car and just continue to sit and listen to the rest of the song. An instrumental surely a Telecaster, some dude playing his butt off. It was Jerry. As I said Ive been playing since I was 7, but this cats in a whole 'nother league. Thank you Jerry, pick on pickin'.

  • I meant DADF#AD

  • Is the tuning DADFAD from low to high?

  • this is simply amazing.

check the latest fretboard journal they have a really cool article about Douglas

    excellent musician

  • owenstc

...it's because he IS one of the finest musicians in the world. Certainly one of if not THE finest to ever play a resonating guitar.

i hate to say it mate but he dont play the resonating guitar he plays the dobro!! there is a big difference mate!!!!!!

  • A Dobro and a resonator guitar are the same instrument, Dobro is a Gibson brand name, he did play Dobros made by Gibson, in this video he's playing a Paul Beard resonator guitar. Jerry calls it both a dobro guitar and resonator guitar. So there actually isn't a big difference.

  • the difference is the Nut if you look at the action of his dobro is bigger than a normal guitar you can fit your fingers under the strings of a dobro, which stops you getting vibration when playing slide cos you dont come into contact with the frets

  • I know the difference, I play one. It's the way they make the sound that makes them resonator guitars. I know all about the different cones too. And Gibson trademarked the word Dobro so other luthiers have to advertise them as resonator or resophonic guitars.

  • Mr Wallas is technically right. Resonator guitar just means it has a resonator. A Dobro is a brand name which is now owned by Gibson.

The difference with the nut is usually that you have a "squareneck" (with the tall nut) in bluegrass, and "roundneck" (more like a standard guitar nut/neck) which is more common in blues.

  • P.S. sorry, I thought you said resonator, but I read closer and it said "resonating guitar" sorry about the mix-up.

  • "I hate to say it, mate".

    But you're wrong.

  • I like metal, rock, classical, country, all real music......but this is unreal.

Hail to the king, baby.(yes, evil dead)

  • love the lick from :28-:30
