I don't believe that being a blooded Hawaiian gives you any special claim to history. None today can claim to have been there, they must rely on external sources. Hawaiian blood doesn't make you a historian.
Well, if Queen Emma would have won the election and not Kalakaua, perhaps history would have played out totally differently. The Kalakaua dynasty was an embarassment to na kanaka maoli. Lets not white wash the facts with revisionism. These individuals in the Kalakaua dynasty including Kaiulani were not "TOA" as the Kamehameha line, kaumaha e.
@MolokaiAlika Hey Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani were both good leaders, Queen Lili'uokalani especially. @Hawnguy100 ad hominem attacks occur for couple of reasons. They are frustrated and can't articulate very well, and/or can't substantiate their argument. I'd say for CURATRIX2008, it's both.

@curatrix2008 Hold on a minute. I think you've done more than enough damage here. Again, your personal experience with racism really has no bearing here. Unlike you, I don't judge someone by others' past actions, that's something u need to overcome.
@mamoahina Hold on a minute. I don't know what type of incest, domestic violence experience you've had since it's so prevelant in hawaii......... blah blah blah

@mamoahina you started the personal remarks cause you aren't able to make a coherent point. Seems you aren't so big on the tables being turned on you and you being the butt of personal comments. I'll leave it up to you, do you want to discuss the issues or see follow the path you have us on of personal remarks?
@curatrix2008 You attacked me, and I asked you to cite sources but you referred me to "google". My point was definitely coherent but look at your remarks to everyone else here, not coherent, nothing but personal attacks which reflects your own personal experience not to mention your age, if not immaturity. Hope it's the age.
@curatrix2008 I researched it, assuming that Palani's paternal grandmthr was Rebecca Lum Lung, then no, not Filipino on that side. Rebecca's father Ah Lo was from China, her mother was Kanaka. I couldn't find anything abt Palani's father except that the Vaughan name as existed in the Hawn Isles since 1865. I checked the Catalog of Surnames for Filipinos & didn't see Vaughan in there & know that isn't Spanish either nor indigenous Filipino. Unless u know something abt his mother that I dont?
for all those who want to condemn "haole people" REMEMBER that Princess Ka'iulani was half white. Open your minds and watch this film and than make your judgement. but do NOT butcher it before you even see it!!! and i'm a local girl, born and raised. proud of my hawaiian culture.
@The04lani so true. My great grand father was a Whaler from Scottland. Don't appreciate what they did but that was history. We move on & appreciate our Hawaiian -ness anyway. To make a difference keep the aina clean & drug free. Educate yourself. I too was born & raised in the Island. Many haole nieces & nephews. Love them all.
As a native Hawaiian that has worked in the film industry for over 15 years I understand how things work. Palani is right. Most people in the industry do not care about the plight of native peoples. The bottom line is money. Can the film make money. They dont invest millions without wanting a return. At the very least the film has people talking about Hawaiians. If you can come up with millions, then you can make it how ever you want. Until then we have to rely on Hollywood to tell our stories.
@psyclox808 Definitely true. I thought I said that here over a couple of yrs ago, don't remember, but Hollywood, as you said, is basically concerned w/ making money. And a GOOD story cannot be told by giving full accounts of truths b/c not all truths can be entertaining for the movie industry so many things are fabricated in order to make the protagonist the hero/heroine.
The title "Barbarian Princess" was meant to be ironic, not offensive. The fact that she (Princess Kaiulani) was educated in England (as were much of the Hawaiian royalty) and was extremely smart and worldly speaks strongly to her character. Let the film come out. Give it a chance. Its Hollywood, of course they will focus on the love aspect moreso then the struggles of the Hawaiian people.
@kiliohu True, it wasn't meant to be offensive but it is. That's the main point. I'm sure making a film about Jews and using offensive terms won't just be "offensive" & no one would give an excuse as to why it should't offend, but rather the results is that people WILL be offended. That's the bottom line.
@curatrix2008 People like yourself may use KANAKA as well as HAOLE in a negative way, but if you choose to continue to be bitter, then yes, you will always be offended of that word. My Haole relatives have no concerns with that word.
@mamoahina Yes, many blacks said they aren't offened by racist terms either. Good on them and me cause we see they are racist, baiting and cause you have no command of language to nuance your position or feelings.
@kiliohu Correct. But we can't pit one group over another & determine which one has more rights as far as determining an injustice. And injustice is an injustice, no matter the degree & people shouldn't start measuring it & most importantly can't make excuses. If using "barbaric" is offensive, then so be it. I just had a Spaniard tell me about 3 weeks ago how they really couldn't see us as having a valid history, simply b/c he didn't see us like them. In other words, we're primitive.
People who have seen the movie are able to have their opinions on it. Those people should not try to keep others from having their opinions on it before they even get to see it. The name of the movie, though it can be hurtful, should not be a reason for protest. This is obviously a movie with a true background, but many created events. Seems like most people thought they were going to see a documentary.
Why waste your time on suspending your beliefs on another persons lies? I guess you are correct then, let people entertain their feeble minds. However, this is America and one is allowed to choose, but why choose poorly on purpose? If someone lied about other Polynesians even if I am not; do not count me to support the hatred or any negative ideas. My money is best spent else where.
@Pulelehua69 I really love seeing movies that are completely true with nothing made up in them to hook people who have never even heard of the person the movie is modeled after. But the people who protested this movie knew of all the false parts of the movie that should have been historical. So, you can ask them also why they wasted their money/time. You really can ask "why choose poorly?" about everything.
@Pulelehua69 People are always wasting their money and making horrible decisions, on poor movies and things far more serious. You dont have to be Polynesian to be angry with movie propaganda that wrongs some of their culture. I dont count on you to do anything, mainly because I don't know you. And just because someone goes to see a movie doesnt mean they choose to support it (obviously demonstrated by the ones protesting above......)
I bet if Hawaiians had made this they could have called it anything their little minds could come up with... probably something like...
"Princess Kaiulani: and the FACT that Haoles go around destroying the aina in their aina destroyers, nevermind the fact that you don't see haoles drinking malt liqour on the beach or the fact that most aina destroyers are one of the braddahs lifted trucks.... DIE HAOLE DIE!"
Or something like that, bet it would have gotten good reviews too.
Archer49d Your comment reflects hatred. Is there a problem of telling the truth? Out of the heart, the mouth speaks. We are just saying that a movie can be made based on truth. What is the intention of it being based on falsehood?
i think it will be an amazing movie and im hawaiian and i think the director had the best intentions while filming this and Q'orianka kilcher is amazing actress and activist for animals and indigenous peoples so she is awsome and she wouldnt do a film that would hurt a cultrue. i love her!!!!
He's right, historical Hawaiian films are something that Hawaiians should do, but for some reason no one has yet. Not even him, after "42 years" of research. Is that this director's fault? The guy clearly cared a lot about the history, and took years to learn the facts so he could represent Hawaii well, and the annexation as horrible, so how is "something like this" offensive to kanaka?
Palani speaks very well, but doesn't really say anything other than about himself.
I have to agree. People should realize that movies are not meant to be seen as factual. You're not supposed to go to the movies to get education. That premise is reserved for documentaries and educational materials, NOT for movies. Movie making is an ART, not a SCIENCE. Star Wars would be pretty dumb if it had to be historically accurate. (sarcasm)
Exactly. And I really don't feel they're portraying us as barbarians. The trailor seems to portray Kai'ulani as an intelligent, pretty young woman. I don't at all feel offended or undermined. I'm glad someone stopped complaining and decided to actually make this film. It is ashame that so much history had to be left out or condensed, though. But I guess it would be too long if they put EVERYTHING in it.
"hawaiian Activists" (you know who you are), are pissed at this flick because of the fact that it wasn't made by them... if they had made it they could have called it anything they wanted, it would have gotten rave reviews and everyone would pat each other on the back (or shaka), the reality is that it wasn't made by hawaiians, but it's about a hawaiian, so automatically it's extremely offensive.
I think Palani spoke the truth about this movie. You said, the this director cared a lot to research the history, well at the end it had nothing to do with the history or the people of Hawaii. It came right back to who put up the money , and if they would make money because the investor did not want to lose money and he had the last say to this movie. The movie portrayed alot, but it seems like it was more a love story than it was about the struggles of the people.
The US filmmakers just steal their film themes from history of other countries. For example there is a film called Pagan Queen (I think it seems almost like Barbarian Queen) about a woman from czech legends, it is about who is faster and who has money to make the film, but I think it´s still very impertinent.
@TheMetalhop, I understand that the movie makers will make this one look like a period romance with controversial historical backgrounds. I hope that enough of the real history or conversation about rises from the release of the film. Barbarian Queen is loosly based on the story of Boadicea of Britain too, a pretty cool flick really.
It's supposed so be what the Americans must have thought of her. And it's probably also to catch an audience with the name too.
I just hope they do it right.
Also, I wish they would have picked a Polynesian girl to play Kaiulani to represent polynesian beauty. As great an actor Q'Orianka Kilcher is, I just wish they would have picked a Polynesian girl.
They did at first (Hawaiian) but I heard she did not have enough experience although she would have been great, spoke fluent Hawaiian too. Investor wanted an actress who had done movies before."Money talks and people walk". I heard Q'Orianka Kilcher was their third choice, second choice was not able to do it.
@WhiskeyyWoman she did live in hawaii though. I like that they filmed in Hawaii and had many Hawaiian faces, even if they didn't have lots of speaking roles. Also, I loved hearing the actress, Leo Akana, speak - I was like: "That's a person who really IS from Hawaii!" Makes me miss the old days.
If anything, Princess Kaiulani was killed by those who instigated the overthrow and also by those in Government who had the power to stop it, but did nothing. What would happen to you if a foreign entity overthrew your country, destroying any hopes you had for your people?! They took everything Kaiulani was a part of. It's no wonder she lost her will to live.
I am sympathetic, but not convinced by Palani's objections.
1) No mention of Wilikoki. Part of the art of filmmaking, and SONGWRITING is knowing what to cut out.
2) Kalaukaua in a wheelchair: inaccurate, but not disrespectful.
3) Gibson present at lighting ceremony. No BD. Palani says have him appear as a ghost? Is that "accurate"? I think it cheapens reports of ghosts appearing to Hawaiians. I am surprised that Palani said that.
Script MAY still be offensive, but P did not show us how.
I think they just cared about getting some stuff as accurate as possible i don't think they really hated the idea of the movie being made.

What do the people filming this movie "the barbarian princess" get out of making this movie????

AAhh that really blows. I'm just tired of not seeing a Polynesian face out there!

@84kedld0f9gh didn't ka'iulani die after being sick for months after riding a horse in the rain?

I am sympathetic, but not convinced by Palani's objections.
1) No mention of Wilikoki. Part of the art of filmmaking, and SONGWRITING is knowing what to cut out.
2) Kalaukaua in a wheelchair: inaccurate, but not disrespectful.
3) Gibson present at lighting ceremony. No BD. Palani says have him appear as a ghost? Is that "accurate"? I think it cheapens reports of ghosts appearing to Hawaiians. I am surprised that Palani said that.
Script MAY still be offensive, but P did not show us how.
