In most areas after Muslim conquest non-Muslims had to pay a tax but could otherwise practice their religion. Many most likely converted to Islam in order to avoid the tax. The gradual conversion of the non-Muslim population to Islam greatly reduced the amount of revenue generated by the Non-Muslim Tax forcing the government to develop other sources of taxation & is noted in their histories.

@WilhelmDrake Hi. The impression created about tax on non-muslims is erroneous. All muslims are required to pay Zakat on their net wealth(meeting certain minimum criteria)which has been with them for one year. Non-muslims were not required to do so. And as you correctly point out that they were required to pay tax (but not Zakat) and were also not obligated to serve in the military. Thanks
