I think this is truly an interesting document of her singing: at this point though severe limitations were showing technically they hadn't yet fully manifested themselves as problems. But anybody who really knows about voice will have watched this and thought 'She had better get to work.' Because what starts out as a minor flaw will turn itself into a major obstacle within a few years if not corrected properly.
she used to be so good!! sh could have been such a great diva!!!! this scala macbeth was a great great performance. But it is all over now . i am so sad... We miss great sopranos!!!
Subtetly?? c'mon! Muti does a great job with guleghina. Her interpretation has to be very dramatic to get the balance her voice needs. thats why muti speeds up and Guleghina follows, getting a macabre sensation and great dramatism. Even Guleghina is not perfect during the whole scene, she handles it very well...
The cabaletta is so fast it's a wonder she can keep up with her big voice. Muti should have given her a little bit more space for the runs. I find her over the top (maybe that was the concept of this production) but she had a fine voice for the role.
It's odd that she recites the letter from memory, then opens it, and quickly hides it in her ample bosom. An interesting performance, marred in a few places by inaccurate and sloppy scales. One wishes for more subtlety, both in dynamics and interpretation.

This is great if you love very loud, very screechy singing. I find it tiresome.

I agree with lungdoc... what a difference 11 years makes!

Much better than the recent Met performance. Eleven years of vocal wear and tear do make a difference!
