juuuuuust switch us over to the AUG, the brits have one, the french and the israeli's have one and the australians use the AUG, the aug has interchangeable barrels too and had that feature stock along with site and grip since i believe the late 1970's it's reliable in the desert (israeli's use) more compact with same barrel lengths. i don't know a whole lot about guns i'm sorry but from everything i've seen so far the AUG or a bull pup style gun should be our replacement gun.

there's already a 20-30 year old weapon system that has those three components... its called the SA-80 family, made up of the La-85 A2 rifle, the La-85 carbine rifle and the L86 LSW. All three have exactly the same working parts and exactly the same operating drills. They all fire the 5.56 round and (at least the A2 and the LSW) are all stripped and cleaned in the same way. I guess the US won't use it though cause it's British design enhanced by HK

@tpd223 no im not saying its good or not... im just saying that flexibility whilst maintaining the original weapon system and therefore all drills, stripping etc. is already present... and yeah SAS supposedly work in 4 man squads, 3 have M16s and one has a FN Minimi machine gun chambering the 5.56 but with a bit more firepower... i know how bad the SA80 is having fired the cadet version (same as the rifle but no change lever) and in 10 rounds had two stoppages :/

@EnigmaHood If I could speak in my own defence I would like to point out that those statistics were based on a test conducted were the guns fired over ten thousand rounds of ammunition. But the thing you have to remember is that you're most likely not going to fire that many rounds in a single small arms fight. I'm not saying that this gun is bad, I'm just saying that the M16 and M4 work well enough and we don't need the XM8.

I once talked to an army recruiter about the XM8 and he said that he was actually one of the testers of the gun and that it was completely unreliable and wasn't worth the price. Also, out of all the soldiers I've talked to, almost all of them said they liked the M4 carbine.
